CANON 7D vs. CANON 60D vs. CANON T2i

i want a camera to do 60% video, and 40% photos.. so photography is important but video is even more important (i film edits).

i'm debating whether i want to spend a lot of money on the 7D and have no money left to put towards attachment (fisheye, external handle, external flash/lights, etc) or if i should get the 60D or T2i and deck it out.

i want to know what you feel i should do, and if you had any past experiences with either of these three cameras.

There are only a few differences between the 7D and the t2i. The 7D is completely sealed which is good for video/photo when snowing. It's also has two processors. They have pretty much the same functions for video and photo. I am not sure about the 60D

if your doing more video... the t2i will be best for you!!! it will still leave you a significant amount of cash to add fisheye etc. but you will lose a little bit of photo quality still takes great photos but not as good as the other 2!!!! go with the t2i nothing but good things heard about it!!!!!

the video quality of all these cameras are the same . The 7d is double the price, and that is because it just kicks ass for photography. The 60d is would be your best shot, because it has the flippy screen which is really useful when filming ski, and it can take fast photo sequences. It is also semi weather sealed I think.

you wont have money to deck any of them out if you can barely afford a 7D

these prices are rough but:

glidecam + tripod = $500-$600

average lens = $500-$1500

flashes + triggers/receivers = $300-$400 for single flash/trigger combo



my advice: save up more money so you can truely "deck out" whatever camera you buy, all three of those would be great with the right lenses/essentials/other accessories

you should honestly look into more than that, a 1 lens quiver that consists of a sub-par fisheye isn't great. Also, there are more things than lenses on that list, which add up.

my point is that you wont be able to get by with just buying a DSLR, you need a lot more to start filming. And by saying you can afford a 7D and nothing more shows me that you wont be able to get a solid setup. I would save up more if I were you

Why the fuck would you buy a lens adapter for a camera that you can buy different lenses for? Just buy a fucking hv30 if you're just gonna slap a fish eye on it.

if you're looking to mostly do video, don't spend the money for a 7D. the advantages aren't worth the extra cost for most people. kind of a wash between the T2i and 60D. video will be the same, it's just a matter of if you would like the swivel LCD screen and adjustable audio levels of the 60D.

I'm In the same boat right now and I'm thinking I'm gunn a go for the 60d. I had a t2i until it got stolen and although it's the cheapest I've had rebels all my life and I'm really sick of their size and photo performance. Plus it's got audio control and the swivel screen can defiantly be a help at times

video wise its the same if not better. it gives you 1/8th stop isos and kelvin WB, two features missing in the t2i, plus crop marks and zebras. Kelvin and 1/8 stop isos also work in photo mode. only thing different is the 6.3 vs 3.8 fps (or whatever they are)

if you're gonna bring in photo performance, then the OP would be better off buying a 50D over a 60D. Photo wise the 60D is a downgrade from the 50D, it's not a true continuation of the XXD series, it's a rebel with a swivel screen.

Here it's basically like this


7D=the best, if your willing to pay way more and get great glass for it.


60D=the middle camera, get great glass for it.

T2i=most affordable, get magic lantern and its basically a 60D, if you invest in glass, then you basically have a legitimate setup that is comparable to the 7D.

TIP: DON'T GET A FISHEYE RIGHT AWAY, LEGITIMATE WIDE ANGLE LENS LOOK WAY BETTER WITHOUT DISTORTION.

It seems like the magic lantern frimware is a lot of work. I am not amazing with computers how long did it take for you guys to download and is it worth the risk?

some of the best lenses are under 300 bones. at least for nikon. nikkor 50mm f/1.8 is like $125. nikkor 35mm f/1.8 is like $175. there are definitely some great lenses for under $500 bucks but then again there are a ton of great lenses for over $500. just trying to say that he could get some great lenses for under $500.

but yeah it seems you'd be better off with the t2i and getting a couple nice lenses or a tripod or whatever. i spent almost all of my money on my D7000 and now it's the middle of winter and i don't have time to make money so im stuck with just the D7k and it's stock lens till spring. even though i wouldn't have purchased any other camera i do wish i had saved up a bit more so i could buy a lens or two and not be limited to the stock lens, even though it's perfect for traveling and a great all around lens. either save up a bit more and then buy the 7D and a decent tripod or lens or something or buy the t2i now and buy a tripod, more lenses, etc.

and as for the fish-eye you want... you don't want a one lens quiver of just a fish-eye, and a mediocre one at that. i haven't spent much time with fish-eyes but when i was getting into photography i really wanted one and read a bunch of reviews and things and came to the understanding that if you want your shots to be mediocre, buy the mediocre fish-eye. sure you can get some good shots with it but i would suggest saving your money and buying a nicer one. from what i've read, you'll love a good fish-eye, and you'll get what you payed for with a mediocre or shitty one.

in my opinion they are. especially the 50mm f/1.8, or 1.4 because that's still under $500 i believe

if i could only have 5 nikon lenses for the rest of my life, a 50mm lens (preferably the 1.4 if price doesn't matter but it doesn't really matter) would 100% be in that group. it's a great lens and i think many photographers would agree with me on that. purely opinion though.

I have used both the T2i,60D and 7D but only for video. My vote goes to the 60D the tilt screen makes it so much easier to set up low or high shots. Sometimes its really a pain in the ass needing to be directly behind the camera. So unless u are planning on getting an external monitor i would go with a 60D

Glad somebody else feels the same way about the tilt LCD. Seems like it would make things so much easier. Always here people saying it's just another thing that could break off, but it's not like the LCD on an HVX couldn't break off either and I never hear people saying anything about that.

also, is there not a way that you can swivel the LCD around and click it back in so it's just like the LCD on a T2i or 7D?

after watching the video posted above are the buttons really that bad on the 60d? the 7D is out of my price range so Im not even going to bother considering it but the t2i and 60d look pretty comparable and the tilt screen seems like a cool feature but the guy was bashing the buttons on the 60d hard and I dont want to deal with a camera that is a pain in the ass to adjust and stuff.

yes you can, it can either close with the screen facing inwards, or outwards. the screen swivels 270 degrees so it can face to the front (so if someone was infront of the lens, they could see themselves in the screen), and it can swivel the other way and it stops when it's pointing down 90 degrees, im pretty sure

I have the 1.4, its great and under $500, but the 1.8 is definitely not Nikon's best. But if you look at my OP, I said "rough prices" a lot of lenses go under, and a lot go over. I was just thinking about modern lenses when I thought up that pricing.

people are also complaining how it's more fragile, and while it may be true to a certain extent, you can flip the screen inwards while it's not in use, therefore not exposing it while you don't use it, and preventing scratches, etc

yea i understand the fragility thing for sure. but like i said earlier, it's not any different than flip out LCD screens on video cameras, and if people are worried about breaking, just flip it in like you said.

yea I have, I was a bit hesitant as well, I haven't shot much with it yet though. From what I can tell it seems like it will be a very helpful addition, especially with the new ISO adjustments among everything else, it really does make it closer to being a 7D (minus the obvious physical differences). just make sure you watch a few tutorials and make sure you do it correctly because you can 'brick' your camera if you don't install it right...

i would go with the 7d because you have more fps when shooting in the park or to make sequences and usually with video people tend to cover it up with music anyways.       *(canon eos 7d)*

if your primary use is video, then the 7D probably isn't worth your money.

if photography is important to you (sequences, etc.) then consider the 7D. but bear in mind, 7D sensor is still the same as the sensor in the T2i or 60D
