Skins - US Adaptation WHY

if you don't compare top gear US to the og UK version then its more than a good show. hell for a show that you say blows, i bet you watch every episode still, don't you? i sure as hell do because its still a lot better than most of the crap on TV.

I never really liked skins in the first place. My friends all thought it was the shit so i watched 2 episodes and it just wasn't for me. There were a few humorous spots like Mad Hatter was pretty comical but over all just not very good IMO.

I gotta say that I had no idea it was an MTV show until someone mentioned in this thread, but how is that even relevant? It's not THAT hard to see my point from the first post, as in adaptations, why?


So, let's sum up!

We've had some guesses and answers.

-Obviously money is one factor
-The differences between US and UK humor and comedic delivery may need changing for the larger audiences
-It may create a chance for the original members to hit it big in the US market as their old chars or simply as producers etc.
-A critically acclaimed show name raises brand awareness
-Two or more versions of the show may start to live their own lives in a good, separate way, creating situations unique to each series



Conclusion: I think that it's okay to try and adapt a show, when there's a honest lingual barrier (subtitles do not happy viewer make?), there are universally very transferable elements ('In this show, we drive cars and chat the shit') or the staff wants to try something different without destroying the soul of the original ("Let The Right One In" =/= Let Me In) but I don't like the approach of trying to recreate something entirely with a new locale, accent and actors and in the process dumping out an empty shell of the original i.e. Skins here.

I thought the UK version was alright. Said it was fucking stupid but I had nothing better to do so I watched a bunch on netflix. Thought it was decent. Was meh at times but had enough decent shit to keep it tolerable. By season 3 it had spiked down a bunch.


Just watched half of the first episode of the US version. It's fucking scene for scene the same as the uk one, what's the fucking point of making a us one. Also tony talks about getting somebody "spliffed up" nobody fucking says that in the US. If there going to leave shit like that than what's the point of an american series.



I didn't think the acting was that great in the UK one. After watching the US one though, holy fuck. The US version is the worst acting I've ever seen in a tv show or movie. I think you could go and pick kids at random from a middle school play production and on there first time through the script come out with a better production. I can't believe that people actually directed and listened to those scenes, then watched them and edited them, then watched them some more and still thought they were in any way decent.


The fucking dialogue. "Purchase the narcotics" You mean by the drugs. " I only like high quality narcotics" Like wtf. Is the dialogue written by a fucking dare officer? The dialogue and acting is set like a bad undercover operation.


I went in expecting it to suck, so I had ridiculously low expectations. I'm amazed at how far below that line it actually fell.


Also none of the guys are in any way attractive.



Nicely done MTV. I'm not bad that it sucks. I'm just disturbed that it could be so bad, and people would still eat it right up.

The first few episodes were a complete rip off.

The episodes after that were funny, but they were in no way like the office. The irony and pathos on which the Office UK thrived was totally gone. Instead you get loads of 'that's what she said' gags and loads of unintelligent, base slapstick humour. Some people may find that funny, but it bares zero resemblance to the original Office.

i got what your saying about US skins and not so sure about US top gear, but i thought the US version of the office was wayyy better than the british one
