Seriously, we are protecting the Iraqis as a whole right now. The US presence is the only deterent to a civil war and chaos. Sure, they would like to see us gone, but they have yet to evaluate the alternitive. We are keeping order even if it may not appear so due to reports of insurgents, but without us it would be anarchy, and not the cool punk rock kind.

I think some foreign protection was definitely needed so as to avoid the emergence of another tyrannical regime but it should never have been chiefly US forces, it should have been an international effort on the part of the UN. The US has way too long a history of 'protecting' countries and then exploiting the hell out of them to be seen as a beneficial aid.

^ I completely agree with you Line69, it should have been a more international effort. But, because of the way things are done in the U.N., it takes time for all 5 powers to agree on one thing. Bummer, I'm not really a supporter of staying in Iraq either.Oh Yea, everyone listen to bigJ, ALL IRAQIS ARE IGNORANT. Seriously, what were you thinking when you said that? Just because Iraqis were led by Saddam, whos menthods were quite unorthodox, doesn't mean that they all loathe U.S. involvement, but some do, some don't and some just wan't running water again. The really funny thing is, if we leave iraq right now like everyone here says we should, and a new saddam-like regime sets in like it almost definatly will, you will all bitch about how we shouldnt have left in the first place.

Half the kids on here (not as much people 16+ years of age) only 'hate' bush because everyone else on here does, and they've only heard the bad things that everyone says about him. I feel I must set the record straight here. A new Saddam-like regime would certainly NOT set in if the U.S. were to leave. A muslim fundamentalist would seize power. That is far different, though arguably not a hell of a lot better. I don't agree with people who say we should just leave. You don't solve a problem you created by just running away from it. More international involvement needs to be integrated into this effort, politically and economically. Quiz: If U.S. corporations take over everything in Iraq and Americans install a sympathetic government, the rest of the world will be:
a) pissed off
b) threatened
c) resentful
d) all of the above

I don't think I need to tell you the answer. Good can still come out of this, but not by making rash decisions and taking desperate actions, nor by giving full reign to the man who created this giant mess o' potamia (to borrow a phrase) in the first place.

There has been civil war going on in Iraq since WAY before it was caled Iraq... Thousands of years... I don't think that the US occupying Iraq for a year or some short amount of time like that... if we occupied for like 100 years, it MIGHT make a difference... not that I agree with them knocking each other but I disagree with us being there... When we went to war... I was so angry with Bush... If you'd known 3 1/2 years ago that if we elected bush, we'd go to war, he wouldn't be in office... maybe I'm just a hippy but MAKE LOVE NOT WAR!!!!!!! Peace is the way to go... there's always a way around war. Plus what do we tellthe children of our nation? Don't fight.. but the government does... great example bush...

Peace is relatively non existance. This modern world we live in was forged by war, about every modern nation that was created more the two hundred years ago did so through wars. War is the natrual progression of society, not peace. No great nation was ever founded through diplomatic channels. War is human, and as long as we inhabit the earth there will be battles fought. Peace on a grand scale or world peace is purely idealistic and not even possible.

I basing it on history and just basic human nature that is visable everyday. I am not refering to any philosiphers from any period, but I am taking an historical approch to it. THere has been no period of extend peace world wide, and thusly there, most likely, will not be. And philosiphers do not define truth, they only define their own ideas, so even if it was a Hobbs refrence it would not be true, and if you give me Voultare as a rebutal it would not nessisarily be true. I don't think that philosiphers should be used as evidence in an argument, but examples that give it credibility. Regardless, I base my assertion on what I have noticed from a historical standpoint, not from a philisophical one.

I just thought you might be referring to something in particular, since philosophy is partially the study of human nature. Such students of human nature tend to disagree with you. What's your evidence? That there have beenno extended periods of peace? I'd like to cite the Pax Romana as a counterpoint, with the concession that beyond the Roman world, there was indeed still chaos. Now, take into account the existence of the present global community. In the past, we have not been so internationally connected as we are now. It is posible to achieve peace throughout the world with cooperation, and peoples' natural instincts, if you choose to use that as your argument, tend mroe towards survival than towards killing one another. If people realize that mutual non agression is in their best interests, then peace is possible. A trend must be created to this effect.

However, Rome peace was a mere interlude, Rome was founded on violence, the raid of Sabine, and it ended in war, the many sackings by various barbarians-too many to name. The Roman empire did not grow to its extreme size through diplomatic treaties, it did it through war.
Todays interconnection due to the united nations and such will not end wars, radicals, extremists, insurgents, and revolutionaries are not part of the general assembly. Also, the numerous alliances make smaller wars into larger wars, WWI. WWI was just an assination on a prince that turned into one of the bloodiest wars in the past century. Today, violence still occurs in place other then Iraq on a wide scale such as the raids in the Sudan. Nothing will derail the radicals but violence. World peace is going to be nonexistant until humans can get rid of the ego.
