Coming from owing a saab (a 99 9-3, older model so i don’t know about the comparison) but the saab im pretty sure will be more expensive to fix.
I recently bought a 03' wrx, great car except the gas mileage is pretty bad and with the tiny tank it has youre lucky to get 300 miles on one fill up, coming from getting around 500 a tank in my 9-3, im somewhat jaded. I have a rocket box on top of mine and it looks pretty nice, but i cant open the rear hatch more than 8 inches with it on which is sort of a pain in the ass, because of the wagons spoiler. I bought mine for around 9500 after taxes and all the fee that get throw in there. It had 69,xxx on it so i got a great price on it since the car its self was in the mid 8's. Over all its a great car, pretty good size back seat for a small car, pretty fast, fun to drive, good cargo space with the wagon, looks pretty badass in my opinion, just remember dont expect a AUDI's interior, the inside is pretty bare, with not to much storage, but non the less still a good car.
However...People drive like idiots with AWD, its not a save all, that will make you blast threw any weather effortlessly, it defiantly helps but dont skimp on tires, mine are pretty crappy now and it almost negates the awd at times (Only in the snow, still grips really well on dry pavement). LIke any car it is still expensive to fix ill be at 80,000 mile mark before you know it and i have to drop about 1250 on new belts and tires. Dont spend youre entire budget on your car especially if you get it used because it inevitable that things will go wrong and you will have to spend money to fix it.
i would also look at the legacy wagon around 2005's, and i personally love the forestor xt, funtional and pretty fast
