Alright so I have been arguing with this chick about how she charges way to much for her "professional" photography. Although im sure most of my arguement is fueled by jealousy that she is successful with half ass studio portraits, my side of the arguement is that all of her portraits are nothing more then some photoshop tutorials and a little bit of direction light, eureka! "Professional" photos.

Anyways here are some of her photos. I will admit all the makeup she does is fucking badass. but here studio portraits, and over photoshopped image's aren't cutting it for me.

Looks like a 13 yr old girl obsessed with twilight thought up most of those shots. I don't know why you would ever go to a professional photographer to have your picture surrounded with red mist. The black and white isn't that bad but I dont care for the rest of them. Also i'd probably be pissed if someone changed the sky in my wedding photos to something off google lol. Take all this with a grain of salt cause I don't know shit about photography.

she over does hdr and it looks nasty. sure she can sell that shit but most of it wont fly with the photo comunity.

She doesn't have a set pricing, it varies from customer to customer. I remember a while back she was holding a constest and the winning packages had a cash value of over $500!!!

It was worth maybe $100

She has good photos but some of them really grind my gears when she has 5 hours of editing thrown into it and the damn horizon is crooked or some shit. Little things.

OP why would you post this in NSG? all you're gonna get is a bunch of kids who don't know what they're talking about.

anyway i like the direction of the first image, HDR and flare based lighting are hot concepts to have in your portfolio right now. especially if you're trying to get a job. and even if some of these look over photoshopped it's probably a)the photographers style and b) a way for clients to see what she's capable of as a photographer

next time make a thread in M&A.

god girls like that piss me off, all of those are terrible

this fatass at a school near me charges $100/hour to point her Canon Rebel set to auto at people, and people claim she wastes time so it goes on for longer....

I guess I'm just a photo snob, but honestly, get some damn flashes/learn to use your camera before you charge kids

EXACTLY. The small community I live in knows nothing about photography so the eat it up. A friend of mine makes a living off of Istock (like over 100 grand a year) and he said not very many of her photos would even make it on the website much less sell.

yeah, $500 is way too much-- I went to her site and was not impressed. I'm getting my engagement photos taken at Qwest field-- $350 for the entire session, all photos, edited, digital copies and shared copyright. I don't know much about photography other than some black & white classes I took in college-- but these photos look superior to the girl you're talking about in my opinion.

This isn't me...but another couple that they did who were into the sounders.

I hope you don't think that trait is exclusive to where you live. If people will buy it, she can charge whatever she wants, regardless of how her work is viewed in the photo community. We're not buying her work, it's her clients that want to pay for it--kind of shitty, but true.

and i checked out her site and it looks like you posted the better stuff she has. Which isn't saying much.

she doesnt even know how to use basic rule of thirds. I am looking at her wedding photography and she has tonnes of dead space and doesnt know how to use direction. you learn this in basic photo class. im frustrated because I also do photography she is taking buisness away from real photographers

AHH yes this is exactly what I mean. She doesn't follow any of the basic rules anyone who has taken photography knows about. A photographer should be able to take a photo, make minimal and have it be beautiful. She just frustrates me so much, especially since she's making money and Im broke haha.

ah yes..shitty work for sure...this is where we need to teach the children on NS about the REAL WORLD.

Photography(if you plan to make a career out of it) is 90% business and 10% photo. That is just the way it is in 2011 with the way technology and society such as art school(banging out thousands of "photographers").

Maybe she's got the last laugh on you "photo dorks", considering she is cashing checks & building up business.

End the end, she is making a living taking photos. Most of you, cannot not say that, even though NS is full of "photographers". Just something to think about.

not a fan of HDR shit. that black and white portrait doesn't look good at all. the girl is blocking her face from the light, and it just doesn't look good.

Wouldnt photography be pretty fucking boring if everyone walked around taking photos, where RULES are the number 1 concern?

Liberate your "photo class" mind a little bit man.....rules are for fucking dorks...and i hope you dont spend your photography worried about RULES and not Creativity.

Again, you might be wiser then her when it comes to photographer, but she is 10x more intelligent then you when it comes to business. Back to the bigger picture(bigger then your little art school), your broke...and she is sitting on a pile of money. Doesnt really matter whose the better photographer.

PS, she probably doesnt have any art school debit either!

Rules in art, such as photography, are there for a reason- because they're 100% proven to make more sense and produce a product which is 99% of the time better. Think of photographic rules like the rule of thirds or the rule of not using HDR too much or my favourite rule this chick is breaking, don't use too much photoshop, as rules similar to the "rule" of using a paintbrush for painting.

Sure you can paint with your toe and paint with a rock, but every good painting has been done in a select few, proven methods. stick to those methods, and stop trying to be a different, unique asshole.

And this girl may be "rolling in money" now, while she's 17, but freelancing and shooting with very little talent or skill like she is will get her ABSOLUTELY no where. where most photographers end up anyways.


tl;dr: I don't want to be a photographer and that's ^ why.

Thats your opinion.

I see someone that is able to make money(at her rates...pay bills,rent etc when she gets older)and building a client base doing something that they love.

Making money while building a photo client base, what logic are you using to say that is GOING ABSOLUTELY NO WHERE? Especially at the age of 17?

Do you have any idea the importance of a client base to successful freelance photographers(such as Dan Carr)?

fuck those photos sucked. i hate people like her. there is a girl i go to school with who claims to be a "photographer." as a side note, she only shoots portraits. she shoots on auto 100% of the time. consistently cuts off little bits of hair, or fingers, or chops mid limb, or does some other dumbass retard crop or shoots with awkward angles. she does heinous editing jobs, over-saturates everything, blown out backgrounds. and most she recently acquired a 7D and was asking a friend of mine if she should get the stock 18-55 lens with said 7D, because she thought it was really good. one of her main reasons for buying the 7D was the frame rate. again, she shoots portraits, FRAMES PER SECOND DOESNT MAKE A FUCKING DIFFERENCE FOR PORTRAITS. and lastly, her best question asked, she was wondering if the 7D could, and i quote, "do the effect where background is blurry and the foreground isnt." you have no idea how badly i want to punch her in the fucking face.

I strongly disagree with you and im sure every professional photographer would also.

Photography is very creative in choosing your subject but is nothing without the basic rules of photography.

How you choose your aperture, shutter speed, iso speed, what mm lens, whether to use a filter, flash/no flash, rule of thirds is all part of the rules of photography.

If you take a picture of a tree in front of a landscape and ignore all rules and I take a picture of the same tree with all the aspects of photography in mind I guarantee 99.9% of the time my picture will be much much more pleasing to the eye.

Wrong, I can list 8 artist off the top of my head within my city who would love to have this discussion with you. Lets use common sense and babble false assumptions about "every professional photographer".

Rules(to an extent) obviously make photos more pleasing to the eye. But hey...so does a well done HDR to the average person too! So I wouldnt be so brainwashed over rules. Book worm photo dorks are hilarious.

Photography is an art form. To use strict rules(as you say) is so naive.

some chick asked me what the "effect circle" was for...
she was talking about the lens cap.

same chick also asked why there were dials on the lens then said something about the camera being auto and not needing to touch any of them. she was writing an email to nikon telling them to make lenses without those "dials"

i forget exactly what she said, but i almost hit a girl that day.

I have a cousin like this, she says her passion is for photography, well thats cool, whatever you like, go do it. But to my knowledge she's never actually done any schooling for it and yeah, she wants to be a professional photographer and all her pics are like these, super photoshopped and using very generic angles. We're in an era where anyone can have a camera and anyone can be a photographer. You need to be able to actually capture something remarkable on film and not rely on photoshop to be a good photographer. That first pic made me think you were just jealous, but the rest, especially the one with the fire shit made it clear that you're right.
