Broken pelvis. To be more precise, the acetabulum, which is the cup part of the hip joint.
Where: Méribel snow park, Les 3 Vallées, France
How: overshot a jump, landed all kinds of sideways on the second one, got catapulted into the air, fell on my back.
Aftermath: had difficulties getting up, but took 2 lifts and did 3 pistes to get back to the next valley over, Val Thorens. Passed out in the elevator, went to sleep, fell out of bed when going for a nightly piss. Basically, I could stand on my leg, but my buttcheek was falling off.
Called the whaaambulance the next day, got X-rayed at the local hospital, French doctor said: "Miister, your ip is broken. You will have problems walking for a long time." Got transported to the nearest town, Moutiers, got a scan, and the images were sent off to the specialist in Grenoble.
My insurance couldn't get me a flight home because the 'broken bones flights' were all full. It hadn't snowed in a month, and everything was icy, so dangerous. The hospitals were crowded, too.
So two ambulance dudes drove 1000KM, picked me up, and drove 1000KM back to my local hospital.
I got surgery 8 days after the accident. The operation was supposed to be 2 hours, it took 6 hours, and 4 tries to get the fracture to close. I woke up in intensive care, feeling like they'd cut my ass open. They did.
Reconstructive gear: One massive bolt, plate and small screws for a little fragment. About 100 metal staples to close the skin.
Recovery: 3 months in a wheelchair, 2 more months on crutches. Lots of physiotherapy.
Back on snow: 6 or 7 months later. The joint itself is fine, some of the surrounding muscles have been severed, so they're a little stiff.
So, do I win this thread?
