How to split gaz & stuff in a roatrip?

Hey there,

First of all y'all should know that it's hard for me to explain this in english...

I'm planning a roadtrip from Quebec to Bc really soon.

It's Two days of car, wich is really big. We are going there with an Honda Fit, wich is a small compact car very practical.

The thing that I am the more worried about it how to split the costs.

For the gas its really simple, one tank one tank..
But for the use of the car, (the car is not mine) I really don't know how to split this. We are two, and my friend want me to pay him 250$ for the use of the car for the whole trip.

I searched on internet but I didn't found the answer.. How to fairly slip the costs??

Add up costs, divide by number of people. 

Unless I'm missing something.  Are you trying to say the friend whose car is, is also going but wants 250$ for use of his car ?

Yea gas is easy one guy buys one tank another guy the next, or keep or reciptes and figure out what you owe at the end. As for the car I've never had that heppend, on longer trips we split an oil change but 250 for the whole trip on top of gassounds steep.

As for the drive becareful I was just home in Thunder Bay (you'll have to drive through there) gas was a $1.22 a liter, so I would look up where the reserve is and go buy gas there (the station called Pelltiers had it almost for a buck a liter). Another tip would be to try and make it to brandon MN as gas there is usually 8 to 10 cent cheaper then winnipeg. Though I was driving a truck with a snowmobile in the back and you guys are in a fit.

basically you would need to know how much depreciation a car has per mile it is driven.  Take two cars, same model, same year at the same dealership.  Take the difference in price and divide by the difference in mileage.  This will kind of give you depreciation per mile.  I think that's what you're asking, but it's kinda ridiculous

It's exactly what i am asking... I know it's kinda ridiculous, but when it your car and you drive the whole Canada go and back, its like 8000 km at least that you put to your car..
I understand him, but I know 250 bucks is way too much.

And by gaz i meant gas lol its in french!

I don't know anyone who has every charged someone for taking their car. He obviously wants to go to so what the fuck? Sounds like your friend is an ass hole.

Buy him dinner once or twice and tell him to stop being a bitch. I can guarantee you that if he's that worried about the use of his car he's not going to be a very good road trip buddy.

Going tank to tank on gas doesn't work too well. It would be better to throw all the gas on a single card, write down how much it costs, and then split it up when you guys get back. Makes things easy.

meh nah tires last 10-20k miles, stop defending your cheap, asshole friend. I drove probably 4-5000 miles with my different friends in highschool in my car(mutliple road trips), never charged them a dime except for gas.

If he's REALLY going to have a fit about it, find out how much new tires are going to cost him, and split up the cost of half of that to shut him up? I can see where he's coming from, but it's kinda a stupid request.

It's going to be about a 10,000 kilometre trip for you, and car tires can last up to 50,000 km.

if he really wants $250, possibly look into renting a car for a couple days.  You could easily get a 2 day rental for that amount, reliable transportation and nobody has to stress.

Does seem ridiculous, but at the same time, I drive my friends too the hill every week, and it does sorta get frustrating. Getting gas money is awesome, doesn't always happen though. I mean theres no way i'm gonna charge for use+gas, but it's annoying thinking how much more I spend per trip, considering gas, insurance, maintnence, buying winters ect.

Well, the IRS recommends to pay employees $0.14 USD per mile driven, so just figure out how many miles are driven, then divide by people.

This takes into account depreciation of the car as well as wear and tear.

If hes your good friend then that is wack. If you guys recently met then I might see why he would ask for money but not 250. I drove me and my best friends to florida and back from NY in my car. The car deffinatly got beat up I needed a new wheel bearing when I got home my buddy spilled food and stained my back seat. They were my friends and I had a sick time so it didnt bother me at all. If it was someone I just met I would be pissed.

Me and three friends drove from northern NJ (home) to south beach for a cruise this past summer.  We went back and forth untill we decided to take my car.  I didn't pay for any gas on that trip so I saved a few hundred and my friends all split the gas amongst themselves.  No comlpaints at all.

Whenever I would go on big road trips with friends or my brothers, we would all just throw like $100-$200 each (depending on how long the trip was) into an envelope and we would use that for gas money/oil changes/misc. stuff.

This makes sure that everyone pays equally (some people are real pricks when it comes to this, sounds like your buddy is pry one of them).

Then if there is any money left over at the end you can either split it up between the three of you or do like we did and blow it on booze and other mind-altering substances.

Is it really that hard? If you put in 40 at a gas station everyone throws in 10 if there are 4 people. Or somebody buys and then somebody else buys at the next station and so on.

driver: fills up tank before trip. go through trip someone pays for all the gas, upon arriving home add up total gas costs, everyone pays their share back to whoever paid. driver may be exempt from paying since they drove

I see where he is coming from but he is for sure over charging... What i do for road trips when its my car and me driving depends on how many people i am with.

If its just me and someone else i usually have them pay for like 2/3's of the gas...

If its like 4 people then i am exempt from buying gas.

Ok here is what's up. Going to bc and back and if you do a little trip here and there is gonna run 12000k on your car. What you could do is: pay a fixed amount calculated at whatever rate you both agree on but say that this rate include all reparations done by something else than an accident (like oil change and shit)(and the car is most likely to break once...). If the person who is driving the car breaks it in an accident it would almost alway be the driver's fault.

Try renting a car, youll see 250 is cheap as hell even if it was 500/2

Try buying a car, you would loose more than 250 by selling it back after the trip.

The next best thing to do is steal a car. Then you both not have to pay.

Honestly your friend is very fair asking for 250.

Pour preparer ma van pour lete passé ca ma couté genre 1200 juste pour sassurer qua brise pas en voyage....

yea i'd agree with that, if he's making you pay $250 and he's going along, then tell him to fuck himself. Especially if you're splitting the driving or he volunteered his car.

For $250+the price of gas, you could probably fly out there.

And really, unless he's planning on selling the car in the next year, it doesn't make much of a difference. He's just trying to make a quick buck at the expense of some friends.

He has a right to ask you to pay for usage just as much as gas.  I don't know how you fucking idiots value the two products any differently.  I can see where you're coming from about it being his friend and all and how it seems more like business than friendship.  But think about if it was OP's car and he was about to put another 5k miles on it, that's not just some small road trip shit (I know some of you wouldn't think twice about doing it for your "friends" but still, it's $$$).  Oil change, tires, general wear and tear.  Now the price of $250 I can't comment on, I dunno how much that shit costs for a Fit but it doesn't sound entirely unreasonable.  Pay your friend, but work out a price and talk about it, who knows where he got $250, maybe he just wanted to buy something that cost $250 haha, maybe it's not a bad deal who knows.

250$ c'est peut-être une peu trop, 150$ ça serait plus résonnable. Pour le gaz tu fait 50/50 , ca ses pas compliqué, pour l'usage de l'auto mes toi de l'argent de côter (250$ on va dire) pi si ya dequoi qui brise en chemin ou il faut un changement d'huile la tu lui donne un peu d'argent. Mais je voit pas pourquoi tu lui donnerait 250$ pour un auto qui aura surment pas de probleme a se rendre la bas. Moi jai donne 300$ a un ami pcq sa transmission a lacher a Nelson, pi une transmission c 1700$, mais c pas mon auto, donc 300$ stai resonnable.

Typically if someone drives you just split the cost of gas-- or sometimes the person who is along for the ride will pay for the gas to be nice because the other person has offered to drive. Charging someone for the depreciation put on a car when the person who owns the car is also going on the trip? No. Just rent a car.

Seriously rent a car and ditch that kid he can drive himself. At first i thought he was loaning his car to you which i would probably charge 50 bucks if someone took my car on a roadtrip without me. Cant believe you would even consider that.
