Best burly safe binding

Stats- 6'4" 190-200lbs, charging everything from pow to mogul fields(fuck zipper lines just carve over 2 or 3 at a time), and for drops onto the same terrain. they will probly be mounted on Wrens

i want a binding that has vertical toe release, all metal, preferably turntable heel, and DIN of 15-16. Basically i want something that has all sorts of release directions, but will still keep me locked down when i need it most ie. pre-releasing during a mogul field straight line hurts...a lot.


Im thinking like the fks, or sth 16, but any other recomendations, and specifically why they are recomended would be great.

i thought both were metal and pretty much the same thing? anyways do they have vertical toe release? i feel like that would be the biggest protector of my ACL.

Marker jester

Real nice low swing weight and it has a horizontal spring compared to most other bindings that have a vertical spring. Alows you to release vertically more safely.

STH16 Steel, is a 916 remake. They are in limited release currently and have a $500+ retail.

The STH16 is a mostly plastic hybrid of the new driver series and the 916

No burly binding is going to have vertical release.

An FKS 140 would have it.

did you even read his specs? 6'4" 200lbs and you recommend a plastic 14 din binding? And to to kid who said jesters, gtfo, one of the WORST bindings ever produced

OP, you don't need a vertical toe release, it does more harm then good, hens the lack of it on almost all 15+ din bindings. 916s are the most solid, trusted binding on the market. If Seth swears by them, they will be plenty for you. PLus you can get them used for less then $170.

Wait, even the older (white/gray) sth 16's are mostly plastic? damn thats a shame cause i have those on my OG ARG's which i would be selling to raise funds for my new setup.

Sounds like its between 916's and fks 14's? I mean i would probly ride them at 12-13 DIN, and i know you want to have the DIN around the middle of the bindings range.


Also, i would really love to put Dukes on the skis, but i am afraid that i would be sacrificing too much downhill performance and durability, as i would only be doing SHORT skins (95% lift served, 5% max skinning).

if you ride at 12, get fks 185s over 14s, much better toe, all metal too unlike the 14s.

But my vote is still for 916s, you will fall in love with them, they DO NOT BRAKE

He asked for veritcal toe release so I recommended something with vertical toe release with a din of 16. You dont have to be such an asshole just because I dont spend every waking moment on a ski forum. So you can GTFO and go fuck yourself you douchebag.

holy fuck to what, my binding suggestion or my spelling....if its to my spelling then this is what i have to say i was typing it on my touch durring class....that should explain for that. and if your "holy fucking" my binding suggestion you offisly never have ridden them.

FYI 916s can and do brake. Seth blew out both his toe pieces (albeit on an 80' front flip) but my brother has also broken a 916 toe. They also have issues with the toe wing AFDs cracking and falling out (bindings are still useable, but it is a pain in the ass). I haven't heard of 916s having the same toe wing AFD issue.

All that being said 916s are still some of my favourite bindings ever. I've had 5 pairs over the last 7 years or so, 2 of them have had toe wing AFD issues, but besides that they have been absolutely bomber. Clicking into the solid metal heelpiece is one of the greatest sounds ever. I've moved onto FKS180s and love them as well. They're a bit lighter, don't have adjustable toe-wings (which is a plus) or adjustable toe height (which isn't great) and their brakes are much more difficult to bend. I don't think you could go wrong with either. FYI, if you use a Vibram sole boot definitely go 916/STH16 for the toe height adjustability.

The old 916s are f**king bullet proof! Had a pairs for 10 years now and they work great, although look like crap (if you care). They stopped making them a while back but I've heard that they've been re-released (they may be a bit different now so don't quote me on that).

The more recent Salomon 16s (STH16s) were crap. Not so much because they weren't durable but because the wings on the toepiece constantly work loose and you end up carrying a pockettool/screwdriver everywhere to tighten them up

Look/Rossi Pivot 18s are bomber too and are my new favourite bindings (took 10 years to find something to beat the old 916s!).

I've had a pair of Rossi bindings (DIN 15, not sure the model name, maybe Free XXLs? ) with a one piece metal toe (bomber) but the back pieces were flimsy pieces of crap that flexed. I now have a pair of skis with these toe pieces up front and look pivot bits in the rear. I put the Rossi toe pieces up front as I broke a toepiece on my pivot 14s on my first day on them (they're not metal)! The toepieces were warrantied but I trust this hybrid setup more (even if it does look pretty ghetto).

^Agreed. Rossi/Look PX15 has a garbage heelpiece. 18 DIN version is different. I've actually seen a number of people using the white PX15 toepiece with the new Rossi FKS140 heels. Pretty sweet combo actually.

And to re-iterate... I believe, (please correct me if I am wrong) that the only 16+ din binding that has vertical toe release, is the Mojo/Peak/Deadbolt 18 binding?

All the salomon STH/916/etc are the driver toe, which only releases to the side, and its the same with the Rossignol Race toe... Right?

I don't know about the Jesters, but they are plastic, and so not burly.

Driver is Diagonal release.

The older deadbolt/VIST 918 had vertical release that could be locked out.
