But really I use a darkbag, a tank and reels, some developer, water as stop and fixer and then photoflo, which is probably what 99% of people use. I've used xtol and d76 for developers. Xtol is nice but it's a pain to mix because you have to make it in 5 liter quantities, whereas d76 can be had in 1 liter packages. I'm gonna try some type of liquid concentrate and doing color soon.
Powder chemicals can really do harm if you don't mix them in a well ventilated room. I'd suggest using Kodak HC110 liquid developer. This stuff is really awesome because you can dilute it so you can develop one or two reels instead of mixing 5 liters of chemical. Plus the developing times are pretty short. This is for black and white film though, c-41 is another story and e-6 isn't really feasible for a lot of people.
