Burton buying out saga (rumor)

I know this is a terribly unreliable source but I was at timberline with my friend yesterday (who has saga) and as we are boarding the lift the lifty says

"oh hey man did you hear that burton bought off saga recently? It totally sucks, seems like everyones selling out now"

I cant find any posts about this anywhere which leads me to believe its untrue... but we asked him about it next time in line and he said basically the same thing and not anything as to wear he heard it from.

Anyway, he didnt seem like he was joking...but I guess that means he probaly got us good.



Sparknotes: can anyone confirm that burton actually did buy saga? If thats true saga could eventually be in retail stores.

They wouldnt necessarily have to be in competition, Burton might simply be looking to acquire Saga as an asset.

Even if Burton did buy Saga, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It would probably be the case that Burton would be looking to expand the Saga brand, and would most likely bankroll an increase investment in stock or increase productivity. That might mean your new Saga comes quicker, or at lower price, or both.

It wouldn't be unrealistic.

Burton has become a sort of industry holding company.
The only reason Forum and foursquare are still in business, is because of the burton acquisition. It gives smaller, rider started companies the ability to provide better product to core riders, at a better price, and at a higher quality standard.

If Burton was looking to delve into the freeskiing apparel market, Saga would be the first to get picked up. They have a loyal, almost to a fault, client base. The manage to provide an especially quality product compared to their competitors.
They are probably low on funds, like most companies these days, and would be a bargain buy.
People fail to realize that when companies like this are acquired, they go relatively unchanged.
What what would indeed change would be timelines. The whole reason that saga has shipping issues is due to factory priorities. Saga is at the bottom of the totem pole.

Even if it had been suggested, it wouldn't ever happen. Pretty certain the guys at Saga would rather go out of business than be bought out.

Yes, there's a price on everything. Maybe it could happen.

However, the guys at Saga are real smart, and have a great business model for how they operate in the ski industry. They are doing well and enjoying building their brand completely the way they want to with the money they bust their asses to make.

Bottom line, OP got trolled hard.

You're so naive. Please don't think the owners of Saga run the business out of the goodness of their heart. They operate it to make money. It is, after all, a business. Sure, they're probably skiers and care about the industry, but this is commerce, and no one is going to choose bankruptcy, and being unable to feed their families, over being bought out and making a quick buck. Money talks. Loudly. Louder than any notion of 'the ski community' can. Sad, but true.

Hahahaha, are you serious man? Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

I wrote that speaking from experience with the Saga. They don't run it solely out of the goodness of their hearts, but money is also not the end-all. They do it because they love the sport and what they are doing, and they are doing a good job making the money they need to to boot - money that generally ends up going right into the next year's line and better product.

Maybe there's a price, maybe not. But I was serious when I wrote that, and I'm far from ignorant about how they operate.
