Shaun whites pass clipped

yesterday at breck i was riding in the gondola with this random dude and his girlfriend.  he started telling her this story and i just sat and listened.  He said shaun white was riding at keystone i think and cut everyone in line and just hopped in a gondola and didnt let anybody else in.  the lifty stopped the lift and called him out saying he couldnt do that.  he flipped out and was yelling at her saying stuff like "fuck you bitch, dont you know who the fuck i am? nobody treats me this way" then she called the ski patrol manager and he asked shaun how he got a pass.  he said the GM gave him a free 10 day pass then the patrol clipped his pass and said come back tomorrow and buy your own pass. owned.

like i said this was just some random guy talking to his girl so it obviously could be bullshit.  I was just wondering if anybody else heard about this or not.  It seems kind of retarded that keystone would throw the most widely recognized snowboarder out of their resort but then again who knows.  maybe they wanted to send a message, maybe this dude just wanted to get laid with a dumb story about shaun white.

Well, that's too bad to hear. We don't even have a set minimum wage by law, but unless an employee is paid with "reasonable, normal salary" they can take it to court. I'd say around €7 (9$) is the lowest reasonable wage anyone would work for.

you're not doing anything to change the culture by not tipping. ask the waiter to include gratuity on the bill if you want to see it in ink, and not have to feel like it's on you to figure out what you owe them.

and if the bill is over $100, a $10 tip is being a dick.

See, this is what I'm talking about. I don't owe them anything and the system needs to change accordingly, so no one should even think about it like that. Where do you (or others) stop the tip gesture? Is it only in restaurants? Bars? McDonald's/other FF joints? Clubs? Dry cleaners?

I'm a pretty generous and helpful person, but tips just are something I don't do by principle. And that only time I've left a tip was when I had an amazing full course meal in a small and dusty dungeon-like side street restaurant in Spain for only €8 and I felt like they deserved more for the value of the dinner, one of the best meals in my entire life.



But on topic, Shaun White is a talented athlete, but people who say "you gotta respect him even if you hate him" are talking out of their ass. Respect comes from other actions than pure athletic performance.

No, I'm not kidding you. You should pay according to the service you've received, that's how it's supposed to work. You are entitled to marginal service, but many servers go above and beyond to ensure that you have as positive an experience as possible- at like $2.35 an hour paid wage(which is sucked up by taxes and your paycheck never actually has anything in it)! SO NO, I DON'T GET PAID ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH FOUR TABLES OF BITCHY, CHEAP FAGGOT FOREIGNERS AND HOW YOU WANTED NO ICECUBES IN YOUR LEMON WATER, YOUR STEAK ISN'T BURNT ENOUGH OR YOU WANT MORE MAYO FOR YOUR FRIES YOU POMPOUS ASS!

Just go to fucking McDonalds if you want to get the kind of service one should expect without tipping. Don't forget to supersize it, you cheap fuck.

"The kind of service one should expect without tipping." Again, I expect good, regular service. This usually includes someone setting us a table, handing us menus, asking for drinks, bringing us the drinks, asking us for our order, later bringing the food, then asking if we'd like anything else. No, thank you, the food was great, compliments to the chef and goodbye.

I really don't know about your experiences with people completely unrelated to me, but what I do know is that you lack humility, dude.

I hate to break it to you, but servers aren't there to meet people and kill some time. They're there to pay bills, and when some douche thinks he's above the tip system, the server gets fucked plain and simple. I lack humility? Do you even know what the fuck that means? I lack a filter- which means that if you're being a cheap faggot foreigner I'll tell you that plain and simple. Humility, a byproduct of empathy is something YOU are having trouble with in recognizing that your servers aren't being paid because YOU'RE supposed to pay them based on how well they performed their job. GET a FUCKING CLUE!

It's not your system. If you can't tip your waitstaff, you shouldn't be allowed to waste our time, plain and simple.

Well, I don't think this conversation is going anywhere, you're obviously upset and you know my opinion. You just fail to see my point over and over again, why would you deserve a gratuity over some other "low-end" job that doesn't usually involve a tip? It's your job, you have chosen to wait tables to pay your bills; the attitude which I abhor here is the fact that you would treat someone differently depending on the amount of money they are willing to dish your way. THAT is fucked up in the social scheme of things.

You don't like that some people don't tip and your wage is so small? Fight for it to change.

we're basically on the same page. and i very seldom not tip. i have to be really angry with service to feel that way, and often enough my boyfriends told me you can't not tip, and he's always tipped, more or less fully, despite service. i think the amount you tip is crucial because i think the service industry is going to poop... and i think people who are quality workers and enjoy work should always be compensated...at least until we reach a point where we're smart enough to include everything in the prices. there's always room for a bad day...but try to keep it outside of work right? everyone else has to.
and people don't get their tips until the service is completed and whose's to say they'll even get a tip anyways?...so assuming a waiter has to do their best as a bribe...well that's not how it works. if they suck, regardless of tips, they're going to lose their job, so they have bigger things to think about if they want to work half assed. it's their job to make sure everything is fine, your wine is refilled, and your food is edible, and if you need anything. it's in the contract they signed the day they got hired...so how they work isn't based on how you pay them, but the reverse.

well, simple rule, waiters make under minimum wage, while most people at mcdonalds make minimum and probably might get benefits eventually. it's customary to tip in a bar or restaurant. fast food joints, pizza places, whatever, corner shops. a lot of them have tip jars and it's your discretion to leave them some change. fact still remains, they don't make minimum wage, and the salaries you receive in your country include your tip. we don't. if you want to come to north america, or where ever, where service is not included, it is a CUSTOM to leave a tip, regardless of the salary the service provider receives.

on the topic of shaun white. he acts like any human would act under the circumstances. he's probably a bit more greedy then some, and i don't blame him for wanting to ride alone, and expect perks. it comes with the territory.

In America, you owe your service person a tip. It's the way the system works. If you don't like the system, don't go out to eat. Deciding to not tip as a means to 'fight the system' makes you a dick; you're taking advantage of people, and you're not changing anything.

Where the line is drawn is dependent upon the service; asides from the 20% tip you owe the waiter

at a counter-order shop (coffee shop, sandwich place, ice cream parlor, etc.) spare change goes into the tip jar. If you're a regular, going to be sitting around on the premises... put more than just the change. (assuming you're actually using cash for regular day purchases)

at the airport, the curb side bag checkers (still existent?) or the shuttle drivers who move your bags get a few dollars ~$1-2/bag

other people you tip: The caddy at the golf course, your barber, at the massage parlor, your tour guide, park crew, valet... it all doesn't have to be monetary but you do owe them. Figure out what's appropriate and know that they're not getting paid enough to do their job. If they were, you'd be paying more anyways.

i think americans don't fight for enough anymore if you want me to be honest. you all scoffed at france for standing up for their retirement age, but that was their right as free people. if you don't like something in life that's why people strike, petition, and write letters, or just quit and stand up for shit. not enough of that goes on. and we all still blindly shop at major chains without considering the consequences on the planet, or our fucking neighbors. as much as i love my country, and where i live, people in the sector of the world, have become excessively individualist and that bothers me a lot. if i don't like something i see, i report it, i comment on it, i say something, and i make a point. clearly that's obvious. there is absolutely no excuse for anyone in a first world country(?) to be paid under 10$ an hour for anything they do. taxes on the middle class is so high is sends them into lower classes, and we virtually see nothing of it. stop investing in how much your country costs you, and start looking into how you can still spend the money and actually see some god damn results. what can you do about it? vote when your legal, and don't just vote for some schlub because he claims he'll cut taxes, because we know it won't happen. stop being so selfish, and stop insulting foreigners, and being racist, and close minded. for fucks sakes, every american is an immigrant, and some of the things about your country is so skewed.

this place is reverting back to the industrial age where we're expected to work over time with no compensation. we're being ripped of our benefits, and overtime pay. fuck this. i'd happily live in a random country where people are least appreciated what they had. you obviously can't escape human error, but living is about bettering yourself and your life. and i personally want to do it without destroying another person. call me what you want, but some of you kids on here are so god damn petty.

Well, I'll promise to at least tip DoWorkSon if I ever get served by him. Hell, I'll even tip some other people just for the fun of it. I just think the tip-based service industry is flawed when it comes down to passing judgement on "taking advantage of someone" if they have chosen (of course, not everyone CHOOSES to be a waiter etc.) to do the jobs they do. I'm done, as not to upset more people with my seemingly dickish behavior.

I run a restaurant in NYC, here is my view on tipping.

0% The server basically fucked everything up, had no idea what he was doing, maybe spilled something on you, brought one persons food, but never the other persons, just gave you a check and expected you to leave, rude.

10% food was late, server forgot items, and he was slow with giving you everything and not making any attempt to fix the problem, but you still got everything you asked for.

15% is if you had normal service, you received everything you wanted, and if there was a problem, it was addressed.

18% You had a great time, the food was good, and the server was knowledgeable, no problems.

20% Everything was perfect, food, drinks, and the server had a fun discourse with you.


Now, I think the above chart is true and fair, at least by NYC standards.

Consider this, you don't own the restaurant. You are a stranger who walks in, sits at a table, and excepts there to be a clean and nice table ready for you. You expect the plates to be clean, silverware polished, menus properly served, water brought, food served directly to you in an order you expect, and drinks served to you. That tip in essence pays for all those services that you don't notice. When you buy food, or buy a drink, you are paying just for the food, or just for the drink, you aren't paying to have it served to you with silverware, clean plates, water, and any condiments you would like. That is why you don't have to tip when you get take out. The tip in essence covers a labor cost, just like when you get your car fixed. But the reason why this system exists is because it is better for the consumer, going along by capitalist ideals, the server is supposed to do the best job they can if they want a good tip. The consumer, the person they are in essence working for, judge how good of a job they did and tip accordingly. If we just paid servers, you would still get charged for the service, but you would have no say in how much the charge would be, regardless of how shitty the service is. The is why when you go to France, the servers are pricks.

Just to add, I am not sure if you have this everywhere else, but a corkage fee and cake cutting fee is common in NYC. It works on the same reasoning that you have to tip a server. You bring in a cake, that means we have to cut it, put it on plates, bring it out, put a candle on it, make sure everyone gets served, and clean up all the plates and silverware afterwords. That all takes time and labor, that is why there is a usual $2 per plate cake cutting fee here. Also, the same applies to the corkage fee. You bring a bottle of wine, we have to open it, serve it, supply the glasses, repour it, clean the glasses, and it is not even our bottle of wine. The standard rate for that is $25.

dude nobody calculates 18 percent

15 percent is standard and if the customer is a cheapskate 15 percent means well done

20 percent means well done for good tippers  or   means fantistic if a cheapskate gives you 20

that being said i usually give between 15 and 20 percent

except at a bar.  A fucking beer shouldnt cost 12 bucks, and if it does, i dont give any tip at all

I tip 18% all the time actually

in TN the state sales tax is .925, so I usually just take the tax on my bill, double it, and then round to a reasonable number. Which roughly comes out to around 18%

18% is not a bad tip man, I don't know why the dude is hating. I worked in NYC for a while as a bartender, and I was always stoked to get 18%. A true 20% is rare at some places, especially in NYC where we get cheapskate out of towners.

Many, many people still use the old 15% rule, believe me, I see it every single day at work. And they do 18% a lot as well. Usually the average at the end of an evening on total sales for a server is somewhere around 18% tip actually.

if you never worked in a job were you got tips .. you will never know..

at least in Oregon.. min wage is across the board the same... i found that out in Colorado and that why i was a waiter for about 1 week and in leadville... its stingy.

but i was a pizza driver for about two years.. and you know.. a stiff sucked.... i still got gas comp that came out of the delivery fee.. but when some on would be like keep the change with one fucking peny... that shit would drive me through the roof. exept when i had to delever like 20 pizzas and a shit ton of other stuff. to the guys at the paper mll..... they would get like 400 bucks of stuff and be like.. what took so long..

if i ever run a restaurant i might print this on the front of all the menus. i might keep "fuck shaun white" in there, depending on how i'm feeling.

i also have some interesting ideas for dealing with people who show up 10+ minutes late for reservations. they involve beatings, verbose diatribe, and some internal bleeding. just enough to keep them on their toes.
