Does Tom Wallisch deserve park skier of the year? I dunno maybe, I don't really care. But overall skier of the year is Greg Hill without a doubt.

I stopped reading when I came to El Chupacabra's post, then his icon put me into a deep trance. I stared at it for a while and when I finally came to I remembered nothing of what I read so I have no idea what they said about Tom.

skier of the year should include all disciplines. freeskiing includes all disciplines of skiing. park skier of the year, yeah i'd give that to tom, his segment with level 1 was nuts. everything leftside and rightside, every rail left foot forward and right foot forward. i think sammy deserves skier of the year though. he killed all disciplines of skiing this year and put out some banger segments showcasing his skills everywhere.

That thread was a relatively tame one of theirs. They don't seem as pretentious as they often do. Usually their perceived superiority over anybody who skis park gets to me pretty bad. Like seriously, hiking up a mountain doesn't make you any more of a skier than the kid who plays around on boxes and rails on an east coast hill. I'm actually kinda surprised that someone on there would check freeskier's poll. I thought the reader base was mostly teenage park-skiing kids.

How can you people hate on TGR?? If it wasnt for the useless nonsense of NSG that makes rays of bright sunshine shine upon my face, I would definitely be on TGR 90% of the time (versus the about 50/50 split now). As you age little kiddies, the "Old Fucks" over on TGR start to become much more down to earth, and in tune with what life is really about. Tech talk, summits, ski/board, and who could forget the padded room are true gems of the interwebs. Real info for people wanting to make real turns, not just hot lap the park in their tall Tees.

What Greg Hill did is impressive, no doubt, but it doesn't require talent. He skied a long way, good for him. I'd ski 2 million vertical feet if I had all the time in the world too.

Tom's style and trick bag are unrivalled in skiing. True, most of his stuff won't be new anymore in a few years. But you can guarantee that whatever is new and cool, Tom will be doing it, and doing it fucking well.

"Meh, I am going to go with TW. Not to take away from the work those mountain climbers do, but somehow actually being an elite skiier rather than someone who turned skiing into an goal based endurance test (even Forest Gump did it for the love of the run, not to clock miles) seems to fit the title "skier of the year" better.

Seriously though, the Magazine is called "Freeskier" not "Back Country Skier". What did expect? A more holistic approach, which would be perhaps better suit the general title of "skier of the year", would award neither."

haha people on newschoolers just dont like people on TGR because it basically two different sports. yeah its still skiing but big mountain is completly different then freeskiing. yea he is good but they think there are better people at there version of skiing. its kinda like taking a hockey player and telling him to do ice skating in tights and stuff. i think

no. disciplines, yes.

someone above said something I liked... that the freeskier of the year should be skilled in many disciplines and nail all of them. This is why I voted for Sammy Carlson all the way.

I know who Greg Hill is, and have so much respect for what he did. I also know who Tom is and think he's got the best jib/trick game out there. However, it is my humble opinion that neither of them deserve the freeskier of the year.

There are a few of us who are crossovers between TGR and Newschoolers. Maybe if only we were allowed to vote we would get it right, but not really.

What a bunch of fags. Ya their are some decent skiers on TGR, but most of them are the people who where to scared to try three's off kickers in the park so they claimed they would rather stick to "real" skiing. I don't think that he is the skier of the year, but these guys are pathetic.

oh yea, he did the 2 million in 365 days. Averaged about 5,500 feet a day of climbing and skiing. Yea he has no talent, I bet you could easily do that.

So, does it really matter if someone get's more enjoyment making laps in a park then making turns, and vise versa? I don't think so. Am I hating on either discipline? No. They both allow the person to have as much fun as they possibly can on skis. When all is said and done that's what it's all about right? Enjoying your time on skis. I split my time pretty evenly between park and big mountain. However, I have noticed that the hate towards each other seems to be pretty lopsided.
