Park Etiquette?

So here is the situation: I have noticed longer lines developing before features in recent years. It definitely has something to do with more people enjoying park skiing, however it is a little annoying.

Maybe I am being possessive or antisocial or territorial... but what is an acceptable amount of time between feature hits. Sometimes I politely ask the next guy if he is up to going and he shoots me a look of intense hatred....Is it acceptable to bypass the queue? If so, then when can I do so without pissing anyone off?

Fellow NSers what is the etiquette at you local park?

At my mountain we we have these piles of snow above all the jumps, to get speed right. When you're standing up there you just go whenever you want, but people don't really wait that longbefore they drop. Some people cut the "lines", but no noe complains.

yeah i dont know about how long you should wait but you should ALWAYS call "DROPPING" loudly enough for people to hear. that makes sure that two people dont drop for the same feature at the same time.

some kids think theyre too cool to call dropping when they do, but in reality it makes the whole thing a lot easier

i think it all comes down to just being reasonable. if there are a bunch of people standing there looking at the jump but not hitting it, then it makes total sense to come down below them and then hit the jump before them. but i still dont believe that snaking is justifyable. even if it is a gaper or a non skilled park skier, snaking is snaking, try not to do it...

getting snaked is one of the most disapointing feelings in the world, no matter who you are

if there are several people waiting i yell drop before going. if i need my speed i "cut the line".  if im skiing with friends i just wait in the line for all of them to go/catch up.

just mozey your way to the front and go. If people are just standing around with there thumb up there ass, theres no need to yell drop or anything

just ask them if they mind if you drop. Sometimes when people are ontop of a feature, they are doing more than just waiting to hit it, they could be talking, thinking about what they want to do, or a million other thinks, it never hurts to be polite. Also, if you dont know the person you are going after, wait untill they've cleared the feature, you dont want to end up landing on them.

If everyone is standing around I usually just go, but there are alot of times where I am waiting because I don't know what to do or if someone is filming I wait until they are ready, but no one gets mad either way. If I am trying something where I know I have a good chance of eating shit, I will tell everyone waiting to wait until they see me out of the landing.

As the saying goes... snake or be snaked- Hasn't failed me yet.

More seriously, if you roll up to the drop in and no one calls their drop by the time its clear that the jump is clear, go for it. you can kinda figure out if people are watching or waiting to drop pretty fast.

People at my hill drop when they want, no line crap. But still, I advance a little down the hill, point down it with my pole to silently indicate my intention, sometimes I'm asked if I'm dropping in...

Where I ski it's way way faster to hike rather than take the lift. (Short parks) So waiting in the line is my resting and visualization period.

I always call my drop, but the only time I feel snaking is ok is if the kids are filming.

snaking someone who's calling their run == dick move, otherwise, ski like you want, most of the guys on the in-run are just chilling anyway ...

also if someones being filmed with a follow-cam it's only respectful to let them snake ...

At my mountain it is usually just a bunch of people standing where we start for the right speed for the jump. Some people will stand their forever so I just scoot down to the bottom of the mob. Put my pole up to call my drop and move into the center. I think it's fine at least I'm giving the notion that I am going. Some people call " Drop " I will wait till they go. All in all I could really care less, if you are not going to call it then I'm going ahead of you....

If you are being filmed I think it is justifiable to cut the line and not wait just pass by. Also if someone is standing higher up for more speed to do something to me they have the right to drop first.

In a few of the Euro and Scandi parks I've skied, kids will stand with a hand in the air when they're ready to drop, and the guy furthest downslope will drop first. Otherwise, they will call dropping.

If I'm taking a hot lap, I always tap my poles behind me to indicate that I'm taking a feature hot. I find it's often useful to give a visual signal of the drop, especially if there are language barriers

I pretty much judge the kid who is droppings steeze and if he looks like hes gonna stomp his shit i follow him before someone else drops. Otherwise I wait for a pause in any notion of dropping from anyone else and snake. LIke said above, I live buy the code of snake or be snaked. accept fellow snakers, and snake in return.

At Breck there's always a mass of kids waiting. It's generally easy to look around and notice who's chillin and who's getting ready to go and it's fairly easy to go pretty quick if you want to... it's not considered snaking around here unless you don't even take the time to stop and notice what's going on around you.

Okay so there really is no etiquette....snake or be snaked....get it while the gettin' s good.

Still I hate messing up people' s focus or intimidating them by following behind.

It really sucks when some little 120lbs kid comes and bitches you out and accussess you of messing up their steeze and acting all gorilla like...I mean I don' t need that kind of aggravation I just want to listen to some tunes and rip it up.

Screw it,  I am just gonna hot lap it all the time.

snaking is gay. i hate it when you call drop and some fuck cuts you off and cases the jump. and acts all chill like he just threw a double misty 12. but the actual people who are god and will at least try a single trick off the jumps normall just go to the front because all the others are to nervous they will fuck up and they wait for all the good people to go. they think people will judge them. and i do

It depends how early in the season it is. If it's really early, it's snake or be snaked, because there'll be 100ish kids fighting to hit 4 features.

Later in the season, people actually start showing some respect, and lines start to form. Usually i'll look around and make sure nobody else is about to roll in, then go for it.

By the way goombo8 using words like gay in a derogatory way is just unacceptble..... it is hateful and infantile. I understand you are pissed, but really you can probbly come up some better way to express yourself.

So far we have: Snake it is the only way.....but snaking is bad.

I dont mind getting snaked by people i know are gonna land their tricks, ill just watch if they set the trick right and go after them, jumping into a bit different direction. but if people do that all the time then it gets annoying. And yes i sometimes cut the line but then i only do like 3s or straight airs that i wont fall on

If you're hitting a line, blow through the line of people waiting. You're hitting a line and they should watch out for YOU.

As for those people waiting, when you drop, you're merging into a "trail" so look uphill to make sure no one's coming.

That's how it's done.

agreed

It feels like your in your car at you are at one of those intersections were you have a stop sign but the other through traffic that doesn't is just rolling by. You can signal, inch forward, etc... but you end up waiting awhile anyway until you assert yourself and snake in.

Do we need traffic lights?

It just feels like it is always these little kids that feel entitled and confront me agressively like little thugs that own the park....Sometimes it is almost comical when they get all thuggish on me, but most of the time it is just irratating.

However I see you point....I will try to more sensitive and aware because the majority of kids in the park are allright.

if theres a big line and people are taking there time dropping i usually just go in the space between people. i want to ski not stand around and if nobody's dropping or fallen then im not cutting anyone off or putting anyone in danger.

I think most would agree that you get a feel for the flow of the park through experience. Body language will tell you everything. Like, if they're ready/anxious to drop by side-slipping down.

I hate waiting more than 30 sec to drop, but at the same time you have to kind of play it by ear.

When i was at Hood, someone would call drop, then another person would say "next, and then another person would call "next" and so on. I wish more places would do that.

we always have a mass of snowboarders sitting at the top. if someone looks like they're going to go but is just standing there, i'll ask "you dropping?" usually they're like "Nah, go ahead."

I always get snaked by kids when I'm about to hit a rail. Worst part is they just get like half a foot of air off the side. They don't even hit the feature. Very frustrating.
