Anyone know anything about Jeeps?

Looking at picking up a new truck in a few weeks and found this

The k's are a bit high and i've heard the auto trans will shit out around 200 but aparently it's been reconditioned.

This has a 4.0L V6, is this the same as the I6 which is in the XJ's?

I'm fully prepared to whore out some karma for some good info/suggestions?

i own a 96 xj and my dad used to own that like exact same truck your looking at

dope truck 4.0l is a bit thirsty at times but if you keep your left foot nice it get around
20-25 mpg.

overall really solid trucks and you can go anywheres in them!!

get one in manual. sure you have to replace the clutch after a while but thats not very expensive compared to replacing an entire automatic transmission because it started leaking oil a while back. and a manual is manly. automatics are for gays and one legged people.

I drive a '96 Cherokee Classic, around 120k on it. My wife has a '06 Liberty and wants a new car. I keep telling her that when my Cherokee has something major go wrong with it, we will sell mine and she can get a new one. I've been saying that for 2.5 years. The things are great, they will go just about anywhere, and I think they are a great looking ride.

I will pry end up picking up a newer one when I get rid of this one.

its a nice jeep in general... worth the buy you don't find to many xjs in that shape anymore. but the difference between the V6 and the Inline 6 (I6). is that the 6 cylinders are in a line instead of them being in a V. Personally if you can find a jeep xj with the I6, its a way better motor there pritty much bullet proof... they ran the same block from the early 80s all the way up till the jk when they brought out the new V6....

the V6 will get you through anything. I've got a 98 Cherokee classic. That model is basically bomb proof. I've taken mine through mud, fire trails, few bumps and jumps, and snow drifts and the thing looks the same as the day i bought it minus a bit of paint on the front missing from hitting some bugs. It'll last you for a long time. you'll get about 15 mpg in town and around 20 on the highway.

but in all seriousness, i'd keep your eye out for a manual trans. unless there is paperwork for the trans being overhauled, i would say its only a matter of time. and its really not a jeep unless its manual :)

also make sure the axles have been rebuilt and the differential and t-case fluids have been taken care of

4.0l inline 6's are really good rigs.  Id jump on it if the title is clean and you take it to a mechanic to have it looked at.  You'll have a lot of fun with that thing.

yeah exactly, i drive a 99 grand cherokee with about 130k and it runs like a champ, as long as the car was taken care of theyll drive forever. things to look for in a jeep though are rust, make sure the frame looks pretty clean, and the tranny, make sure is accelerates nice and shifts smooth. looks like a nice jeep my friends got a jeep just like that and its a ton of fun wheelin in

This looks like a nice find. What I would do is run a VIN check then ask to take it to a local machanic to make sure everything is cool with it. It will not cost you to much but may save you thousands down the road.

looks like a decent whip. i drive a 97 jeep wrangler and even tho it gives me hell i love the fuckin thing. cherokees are the same way they will get you through anything.

but manny transmition is way better= easier and less expensive to fix

yes yes yes yes yes the straight 6 engines last forever. The only major problem I've had is I had to have the tranny sent it to get rebuilt other than that the engine lasts forever.

drop a manny in put a 2 inch lift on and roll some 35s

other than that, sick ride. the snorkel alone shows some decent investment. i drive a 93 4runner with 33" tires and its only a 3.0 liter but it goes through gas quick too, but its taken me anywhere ive drove it

screw jeeps. my dads died after 90k miles of just commuting to work and back. i got an xterra and that thing is the shit. 6-speed manual, offroad package. nissan is just better quality than jeep imho. btw, xterras are produced in america for those of you who hate japanese cars.

I'm actually cruising down the interstate with my roommate in his jeep. It's like the 6th one that he's owned, so needless to say he's an enthusiast. He said that thing looks pretty solid, but that you should definitely have a good mechanic check it out from top to bottom. You always need to be somewhat skeptical when you're buying in to someone else's project like that and you don't want to have any surprises 6 months down the road that end up costing you a couple of grand.

Just because your dads jeep died due to some obvious major problem, doesnt tarnish all other jeeps.  And trying to compare an xterra to a jeep for wheeling capabilities is just laughable.

What jeep are you even talking about?  And when it comes to wheeling there is no competition between all the pros and cons of a jeep vs. xterra.  Ppl wheel jeeps over xterras for a reason.  The amount of things you can do stock with a wrangler, even a 4 door, compared to an xterra is ridiculous.  And the fact that xterras come with wishbone front suspensions is such a huge fucking turnoff for anyone looking for a car to wheel.   Besides this kid isnt looking at buying a new jeep or xterra hes going used.  And attempting to compare the 1st gen xterras would be even more nonsensical.

Hope its a manual, older jeeps and todays wranglers are pretty simple vehicles, parts are not hard to come by. And jeeps are a lot of fun. make sure you have a mechanic check that out top to bottom.

those things are absolutely bomb proof. My friend had one similar to that and loved it. I dont like the white rims on it though, it looks like a toy. Other than that though i'd say its a good rig. throw a ski rack on there and you are set

I have an old 96 cherokee sport with a 4.0 and 5 speed. right now I'm pushing 400,000 miles. I've replaced the waterpump once which is pretty common on these engines and a clutch which is to be expected with this many miles. Unless you plan on really wheeling hard I wouldn't worry too much about getting a 5 speed over an automatic. Also do not ever get newer versions of parts to replace whats on the truck. Get copper spark plugs not any of the new coated iridium plugs, and stick with metalic brakes not the ceramic ones. change the oil every 3000 and you will have a good truck for a long time.

I also own an xj...

as has been said, the owner of it likely does not know what he's talking about when he says V6, unless he's put a new motor in which is unlikely - it's the same bomb proof I6 4.0

I would be interested to know what kind of control arm setup he has on there, stock short control arms would make for a harsh ride, a drop kit would be better but is kind of bulky, and long arms would be ideal.

If or when you drive it listen for squeaking in that area, if he put a poor quality lift on it the bushings might be bad. If you feel like the steering is very sluggish and the jeep wanders on the road, I would recommend staying away from it. Steering issues and worn out bushings can be dangerous, not to mention a likely cause of death wobble (probably one of the more frightening things you can experience driving a car)

Obviously death wobble can be fixed but it can take a LOT of labor hours trying to determine the cause.

Other than that, it's a Jeep. It probably leaks I know mine does. Make sure you check if and where it leaks from.

Check the tires for any sidewall damage from offroading... 33" and 35" tires are not cheap to replace if they pop, and also that much rubber loosing it's form going any highway speed can be an instant rollover.


If you do get the xj, check out naxja.org for a wealth of information but be prepared; you will get hated on for being dumb there too.

Looks like a sweet rig though!

ehh obviously doesn't have long arms, and doesn't look like he has a control arm drop kit either.

short, stock, control arms when on a lifted setup will create a more harsh ride due to the angle that they receive force from bumps on the road. Just something to consider.

but seriously xj's are legendary, you can still consistently see them on the road and that is a true testament to their toughness and reliability...the reason Jeep invented the 4-door wrangler was to fill the demand for the no longer in production xj people wanted it that bad

the jeep you show worries me for a few reasons

1. why the snorkel? Should not be high on a mod list especially over stuff like a winch which will make the rig much more capable, also who is this kid? if it's some highschool wheeler he probably beats it like a red headed step child and who knows how quality those mods are especially something like a snorkel which needs to be done correctly to prevent huge damage to the engine

2. why hankook tires?? koreans don't make good tires, certainly not good off road tires

3. RUST, where is this xj located? please check the frame and body for those infamous jeep cancer spots

any real in depth questions about suspension/modifications/engine/tranny/transfer case you should ask on jeepforums.com....they are all very helpful and die hard jeep enthusiasts that know the vehicles inside and out

Ive had my 2000 Cherokee for about 2 years now and it has 150K miles on it.. I know its alot, but it runs like a charm. Pretty much a perfect car to get you up and down the mountain. Here's a pic of mine.(That pic was 2 years ago to, so I look a little young.)

i have a 96 jeep cherokee same engine, it runs great and mobs through snow not as good gas mileage as some other cars but not bad the thing will last you for sure. the only problem with most jeeps is electrical problems are pretty big with them.

As others have said, the I6 engine is bulletproof as is the AW4 auto trans that is in it. I had the same engine/trans setup in my 92 ZJ (grand cherokee) and it last 230,000 miles. I hydrolocked the engine once wheeling, let it sit for 24hrs, and she started right back up! I would still have it, but it had a serrrrrious case of death wobble, and it was gonna be waaaaay more than what it was worth to get fixed. I got pulled over cause of the shakes once. Check it out, give it a good test drive and make sure there are no bad vibes at 50+ mph. The beginning signs are that you can feel it ever slow slightly in the steering wheel. Does it have the nv231 or nv242 transfer case?
