So my parents decided that my whole family is goin to France this summer.. not sure what to expect. Any Nser's been there? im stoked but i have no clue what to do in france other than museums. +K for good tips

stay out the museums and get on the road on a scooter or some shit. Southern, south-central, and western France are illllllll.

just got back from a 10 day stint in paris........its a pretty cool place. More than just museums, its just a real cool culture. eat all the food you can. its amazing. if you look about 16 you can buy anything from beer to cigarettes. if i could go back, i would try to see every room in the louvre.

seemed cleaner than alot of europe, loved eating outside, but remember to ask for regular water or theyll charge you for sparkling...they seem to love that shit. go to a museaum, do touristy things (theyre popular for a reason) but explore and see parts that you werent expectin. try talking to some people and see if they know english a surprising number of people did! its very pretty

where are you going? brittany/bretagne in the north west of france is also quite cool, beautiful nature, incredibly rough seas, huge cliffs and people still live there as if time stood still for 100y :)

have no idea if this is correct but as far as i know if you can't speak french ur doomed, countries like Spain, Italy, France, germany and austria do not teach english at school or something.

You can get by in Paris with just English. My experience was that some people found my French so hideous that they preferred to speak English. I think you must have the thought backwards, for example, the Germans teach English in school and they speak it better than must of us do.

Well my expieriences in foreign countries are that they do not understand english one bit. I must say i've never been to paris which is a tourist city ofcourse so what you say might be true. but other normal cities in france = 0 skill in english

dunno if you're seeing things, but in my expieriences all the french towns and cities i've been to they could not speak english at all. All they said was: " A bit" and then you tried talking to them and they responded in french

Dude STFU.

I live in europe and have never had any trouble getting myself understood with english. A little french helps I'll grant you, but its not an issue.

Also saying that they don't get taught english is straight ignorant they get taught it from a young age - maybe they just figured how much of a douche you were and just didn't want to talk to you?

haha, i have several french friends and when we communicate, i usually try to speak french and they try to answer in english, quite funny :)

especially the younger population speaks english OK ....(under 30)

dude,

first of all by saying they dont get taught english at school i don't mean it literally. second, i also live in Europe and on all my vacations to like France, Italy, spain ect i could not make myself clear with english. I must say i did not speak to any teenagers or what so ever but mostly grown ups. I am from the netherlands myself and i got taught German, french, english at school. I've had bilingual education all my high school period so it won't be my english.
As you said a little french helps, i must admit my french is limited to the daily need like: je voudrais un croissaint s'il vous plait ect but as i said before, all my EXPERIENCES in french cities and town were that i could not make myself clear by speaking english. Then again i must admit i've not been to any real tourist places ect so maybe i judged to fast in saying french people don't speak english, but i was only talking from own expierences

I've been. It's not my favorite European country, but it's pretty cool. The coast is beautiful. Paris is extremely lively, and there are some great clubs. Oh and you might wanna get used to hairy legs and unshaved armpits... ew.

I went for a week 4 years ago. Different city every night. Honestly, Paris was my least favorite. If your family gets a chance to go to the south of France, it is amazing. Then again you are going over the summer so the north will still be warm, unlike when I went in the early spring. If you are staying in Paris you can easily take a day trip out to the Loire Valley and see some sick castles! All my pictures are on my other computer, but if you want I'll upload a few later, but for now, I found the castle I went to on google, just google "Chambord Castle". I don't remember the exact time, I fell asleep on the way, but maybe a 2 hour bus ride from Paris? And there are many more castles in the Valley. There are also sweet wine museums, and mushroom museums! The one I went in was in a cave, real sick. Some great cities if you are going out of Paris are Arles (has a Roman arena), Nice (Nice is nice, right one the beach in the south), and a bunch more of cities, I wish I could remember the names, but they will come to me over time, like I have a soap bar from France and it says Aix En Provence on it, which is another city I went to, but without googling it I can't remember what was special except I think it had a fortified castle? Anyways, when I went, I slept in a different city every night, and during the day sometimes hit up a different city than I slept in. One city has a huge colosseum, something like the 3rd of the 5th biggest in the world. I don't remember the name though. So depending on how long your family is there, and how much they are willing to travel, see as much of France as possible! The TGV is a high speed train that will take you lots of places, and I'm sure you can rent a car or take a bus on say day trips out to a castle. And if you stay in Paris, there is a lot to do there, such as all the museums, but honestly, try to get out of Paris.

I used to live in France when I was little. pretty dope place. stay out of all the touristy places tho, you will have more fun exploring shit on your own

yeah man, im from Paris, your gunna have have alot of fun. Are you you gunna be going throughout france? or just stay in one spot?
if you have more than a few weeks, take a trip to St. Tropez in the south. Tons of beaches, clubs, restaurants, etc... its really sick.

i went last summer on a school trip. we couldnt exactly live the life of a french teenager ( no drinking had a specific schedule etc) it was truly an amazing experience none the less. we went to northern france,normandy britagne andparis and was probably the best experience of my life. ive already decided to go abroad there in college. dont try too hard with your french ( youll sound like an idiot) and most french can speak and understand english quite well.

any trip can either be good or bad. just be open minded and you'll have a good time. theres some good fuckin food in france, you just need to be adventurous and not go to mcdonalds for every meal. and ya you shouldnt have too many problems if you only speak english but try learning some basic french, the locals are gonna have more respect for you and they'll be willing to help you out and shit

i went to paris when i was in like 8th grade
it was neat and all but i would have appreciated it alot more if i was my age now. I did get drunk for the first time in paris on a rooftop tho. So thats a cool story.

I've never been to a foreign country where they don't speak English.  I've been in about 10 different countries in Europe and they all speak it better than say, Mexico

dude in Paris everybody speaks english. it's one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world

obviously it helps to speak french but you won't be doomed without knowing it

gonna go ahead and assume you mean aiguille du midi, as there is no mount chamonix, and no cable car up mont blanc, in chamonix.

I've spent huge portions of my life in France. Paris is a great starting place, and you can't go to france and not go there. Eiffel tower, louvre, etc...it's all awesome. Though I tend to mostly visit le stade de france when i'm there... Simply put, the popular areas are popular for a reason. Montmartre for example is popular, but awesome.

outside of paris, Normandy is one of the coolest places i've been, especially as a history person. The Alps are just unbelievable overall. Central...there's nothing. Take a TGV to marseille and you'll see almost all of what central france has to offer. Marseille is a cool area, though i can't say i've got much experience there, but the whole med coast is great.

as for language, of course if you go into some tiny village, don't expect fluent english. Major cities you should be able to find some people. But be careful. We french i've noticed, tend to turn off all non-french knowledge depending on the person asking. Make an effort in French, and it will be appreciated. Even if it's terrible and broken french, it will suffice.

I. LOVE. FRANCE. i've been to the cote d'azur, and basically everywhere between marseille and the italian border. but seriously, GO to corsica. it's absolutely the most beautiful place i've ever been to. one of the most stunning towns i've been to is called eze. completely worth it.

the beaches pretty much on the south are all pretty much crazy blue. the beach in nice is rocks i think. but who cares. the architecture is stunning, and just everything about it.
if you end up more north, there's definitely much more stunning things to see. i didn't have the chance to go further than where i did but if you go to a museum, go to the louvre in paris, OBVIOUSLY. i hear you definitely can't see it in a day, or even a week possibly, but they have the majority of a lot of major paintings and stuff, by a lot of very important artists. if you love traveling, france should be something very special. knowing french obviously helps...
