DIII Sports and Skiing

I am committed to a DIII school to play hockey next year and I recently heard that we have to sign contracts saying we won't ski during the hockey season (October-March) due to the risk of injury. I'm pretty worried about this since I chose the school partly due to proximity to skiing, so I was wondering if anyone else has heard about contracts like this.

Also, is there anyone out there who has successfully combined shredding with competitive college sports? How successfully?

definitely not dude...DIII can't offer any athletic money so youre just like any other kid at school. DI/DII can make you sign a contract saying you won't ski and if you do you lose your scholarship.

Shit good school. Well get in first, then figure it out later haha. It's the nescacs so they can't do that much.

Middlebury is one of the best sports schools in the nescacs though...

I played sports in college. This is pretty standard procedure for any team. My coach wouldn't let us play intramaural basketball or anything like that.

If I were you, I would just talk to your coach and explain to him how important skiing is to you and that it, along with hockey and everything else the school has to offer, was why you ended up where you are.

If the coach won't budge, you might just have to choose, skiing or hockey. The good thing about going to a D3 school is that you won't have to worry about them taking scholarships or anything.

no, my best friend plays soccer at university of puget sound and told me that all d3 sports are a joke and will get you nowhere so theres no point in playing. this kid is supposed to be captain next year and hes quitting because its so dumb.

I applied to Middlebury this year. It's such a sick school man. I'm from Seattle, so I don't really know about their sports a whole lot, but I hear they are good.

Regarding your question:
Back when I used to play premier soccer, I had a coach who had just graduated from the UW, and was a really sick snowboarder. He had a bunch of issues with the coach (who was actually fired this year), who wouldn't let him snowboard or longboard at all. Needless to say, he continued to at Stevens, and didn't tell the UW coach. But when the coach found out, he was kicked off the team, and I believe his scholarship was taken. Now the UW is a massive school, as opposed to a place like Middlebury. At UW, athletes are recruited early on and expect contracts of these sort, but I'm not sure what the process is for Middlebury. I think your best bet is to contact the coach or athletics office. I don't really know what to tell you, because it sounds like you are probably going to have to sign this.

Regardless, I may join you at school next year. I can't wait to hear the decision!

100% true, it does not get you ANYWHERE, minus the brotherhood. thats really about all you get. I played D2 and it's not worth it unless your pullin rank in d1..

there is good d3 and shitty d3, there are hundreds of teams for most sports and a huge range of skill level. where is d1 going to get you either?, very few athletes regardless of division end up as professionals. one of the biggest things to take away from collegiate athletics in my mind is networking. its a good way to get to know 60+ people in a cooperative setting, that could definitely help you in the future

Just so you guys know, I don't want to make a living playing hockey. I play it because I love it.. same reason I ski. And it's fun to be a part of a team.

When i opened this thread i thought it said dill sports and skiing. in no way do activities relating to pickles have anything to do with skiing. so that answers your first question.

And you're a queer for picking a shitty college like middlebury next to all the tiny piece of shit hills they call mountains on the east coast. have fun wasting 4 years of your life dumbass

I play football at middlebury and while we don't have to sign a contract saying we won't ski it would be very difficult, if not impossible to ski, play a sport and still manage to keep up in the classroom while in season

I play d3 lacrosse and I'd probably quit if my coach made me sign a contract saying I can't ski. I'm certainly not going pro in either sport, but skiing is a lot more important to me.

i played d1 football and still skied as much as i could. i dont know how time intensive d3 is but i could basically only go on the weekends and i was always way sore and tired from lifting and practice. its do-able but sports take a lot of time. i was at the football complex over 50 hours a week pretty much all year long.

realistically, while playing a winter sport you're not going to have time to ski very much, if ever, during the season. all the winter sport athletes at my school had to sign the same thing, but it didn't really matter because you're practicing pretty much every day you don't have a game. at a school as good as middlebury, you're going to find yourself pretty short on time during the season, just in terms of getting work done, so adding skiing in would be a real challenge. after march, i'm sure you can get away with a few spring days, but don't count on much before then.

with most schools they're gonna say don't ski. Especially with a winter sport. a contract sounds like a little too much though.
