External harddrive w/ mac help

i have a seagate 500gb goflex external harddrive and a mac powerbook G4 with system 10.4.11, i need help with formatting and everything.. its not cooperating when i follow what the seagate website tells me to do. any help would be nice.

go to disk utility, select the drive, format it as journaled

ive tried, but it falls asleep, then i try to install the program that makes it not sleep but i cant becuase its not formatted for OS x so it wont let me, but i cant format either.....

What do you mean the drive falls asleep when you try to format it.. I've never heard of them falling asleep like that.

woow..ya, andyhow, it says for use with mac 10.4.11 and up, which i have, and it falls asleep as in the lights turn off on it and it disconnects from my laptop, they make a software update thing that wont let the harddrive fall asleep, BUT i cant install it becuase its not formated for mac so i cant install it.

i have a macbook pro and my external hard-drive works just find. Should have went to the apple store to get a external hard-drive and not best buy.
