Season in Revelstoke?

Hey ns, couple of us are planning on moving to Revelstoke next year, for the season. Im well aware that the skiing is amazing, but how is the town? Are there many people doing what we plan on doing? What sorta jobs would be easy to land there? How is housing, vacancy? Just looking for personal opinions, where you stayed, where you worked sorta thing! Thanks karma!

town is not huge, and last seaosn it seemed like jobs were hard to come by at times - you probably cant be overly fussy IMO, unless you know people who can hook you up.

usual jobs available - not super many for RMR itself since they have 2 daylodges and really only 3 lifts. there are the usual bar and hotel jobs in town, but again, get in early and dont be too fussy.

i havn't been up there yet  this year, so not sure on the job front - may be different without the gongshow in whistler this year.

that said, the hill is f*&king phenominal - believe the hype. oh and its puking there right now, im heading up this wknd.

Yah man i heard their getting dumped on as we speak! We'd be going in September with money, so we should have a nice cushion to find some jobs and get settled before the snow flies! Have a wicked time though man, so jealous ha!

I'm up here right now - we've got a storm rolling through at the moment. Had about 10cm today. Initial forecasts were 50cm by Friday, but it looks like they're revising downwards. We'll see. I arrived mid-October and sorted out housing using the Stoke list (thestoke.ca/list). I got a job on the resort in rentals, but I pushed pretty hard for it. There's not a huge amount of other stuff going in town, mostly hotel or kitchen work. Revy's a really cool place though, everyone's very friendly and it's a relaxed vibe. Not a huge 'going out' party place, and that's the way I like it.

Anyone know a slightly extended forecast, I know all the snow is hitting towards the end of this week, but I'm skiing there Monday and Tuesday next week.

Oh an Revy is dope, I'd love to do a season there, not much in the town if you want the whole resort/party kinda thing but its dope if you want the ski town lifestyle.

Longest range forecast is the snow petering out by Saturday night. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are a mix of sun and cloud. I'm feeling a bit robbed too because I don't get a day off until Monday next week, but I'm going to squeeze in 2 hour ride breaks each day, so I'm not too upset!

The ski town scene is definitely what im looking for. Looks like Revy's the place to be haha! Think I should be applying this summer for a job next season or would that be to early?

Thanks man, I appreciate it. :) This summer may be a bit early - I think they only start posting seasonal positions on the mountain towards the middle of fall. If you're going for another kind of job though, then go nuts. It can't hurt to look around. As well as the hill, check out the Revelstoke Employment Services Centre (http://www.resc.ca/), they have the rest of the employment listings for the area there. I spent the 09/10 season in Rev.

Step one, do NOT work during season. You'll be damned when you go to work and everyone else skis powder. Work your ass off during summer/autumn.

Step 2, buy skins and trekkers/dynafit/dukes/whatever, you'll need them, there is amazing terrain that you only can reach by skinning. Rogers is close and well worth a visit too.

Step 3, make sure you live near a bus-stop, the bus is free for seasonpass holders.

Step 4, wake up really early to go skiing every day, there are a lot of runs that never get skied if you don't find them. We had a couple of runs inbounds that we were alone skiing last year. Even more OB.

step 5, get a card for the big foodstore downtown, it savess you a lot of money.

The town is small but has everything you need. A couple of bars, couple of restaurants, a couple of cafés, a couple of skishops, a stripclub, a great mountain and lots of great people. Tuesdays there are new strippers and 2$ beer at the regent.

Thats some great advice man! Does the bus go to the mountain cause we are arguing as to whether we need a car or not? Whats you opinion?

It depends where you're living. If you make sure you're pretty close to either Cooper's Foods or Southside Market, then you're set. The bus runs close to both of them, and goes to and from the hill regularly in the morning and at the end of the day. Plus, you'll be close to the only two decent supermarkets in town.
Personally I'm partial to Coopers - it's a bit cheaper, it's closer to the bars and it's got the Bargain Shop right opposite it, which is a great place to pick up dry goods. If you can find a place downtown, or pretty close to, then you'll be set up and you definitely won't need a car.

The mountain is new, and alot of the people that live their are people that want to live in the mountains without having to be around the craziness in places like banff. The mountain is sick, but just so you know there are other places where you can get a free pass, staff accom, and have everything kinda set up for you so you can ski and work for a few months then be done with it. Revelstoke, in my opinion, is more or less a locals town.

Can anyone give me some pointers for some good terrain to go ski, im here for two days, have been before but anyone got any good spots they mind mentioning, like some easy-medium pillow style stuff, little drops etc?

Any help would be great.

Unless you have an awesome reliable car and never go to the bar don't live in Big Eddy.

Don't work for a hotel, it sucks.

Try and get a job with the mountain.

Go to the hot springs on the regular.

Avy training and touring gear is a MUST.

Be super friendly with everyone you meet and you'll make plenty of friends.

Everything here is truth. Also, don't go out and fracture your leg on pow days like I just did. Living in Revie with no job and a broke leg sucks. Anyone for drinks/pool at the regent?

What about Rogers Pass? What it like for winter driving, i hear it's pretty sketchy sometimes? I've driven Crowsnest Pass is it similar or worse?

you'll have no problem getting a place and a job if you come in september or even october. remember the hill doesn't open until first week of december. there's always lots of 9-5 mon-fri labour jobs around, the ski bum jobs are low paying and get taken fast.
if you don't have a car downtown or southside are the places to be, short walk to shopping and free shuttle bus. arrow heights is close to hill (not close enough to walk though) and super far from shopping so it's not the best. columbia park is on the other side of town (where I live) it's a max 10 minute walk from anywhere in columbia park to the resort shuttle at denny's, downtown is about half an hour walk. the big eddy is across the river and you probably don't wanna live there unless you have a car, but rent is cheaper.
not sure why everyone is saying there's no bar scene, the bars can get pretty packed but it's not like whistler or other ski towns because the resort is new and not alot of people like skiers/boarders. there's a definite skiers vs. locals vs. albertan sledders thing going on. don't call yourself a local just cause you live here and you'll save yourself a huge headache, believe me. it's a redneck town for sure, but that's part of why I love it.
about rogers pass, it can definitely get dicey if it's dumping, when we got 35 the other day all 4 highways going in/out of here were shut down, huge line of transport trucks lined up on main street. it makes for some awesome pow days when no one can get into town!!
we got 77cm in 3 days last week and it's about to start puking again tomorrow!! be stoked, be very stoked!

Fuck yeah man, a few people I was talking to today were predicting ~80cm by the end of the week. I have until Saturday off. It's on!

Also @skicowboy - Last Drop's where it's at tonight. FWT afterparty. Trouble Andrew at the Regent with a $15 cover. Don't know why anyone would want to pay $15 to listen to him.

BUMP, I am going to do the 11/12 season out there, I am planning on probably staying for more than 1 season. Do i need a sled? I was going to get mad Avy training and figure out the town is like for the first season then buy a sled for round 2.What do you all think?

There are a lot of sledders in town, but you definitely don't need one to get good snow - there's plenty of slackcountry at the hill and Roger's Pass is just down the road. If you feel like investing though I doubt you'd regret it.

Refreshing this thread in hopes of some updated info. A few buddies and I are moving out to Revelstoke within the next few weeks (lining up a place to live at the moment) How is the job market recently? We are worried that if we go to soon, without enough money, that we will be forced to return home after not finding employment? Any suggestions or help? Karma!

I suggest starting there, the people at employment centers are generally really helpful so if you can give them a call and get your name on a list there calls tend to come in for work.

There's not a lot of stuff going, it's the middle of summer and most people have found jobs already. Your best bet is either the RESC linked above, the Stoke List, or getting some contacts locally and scoring some under-the-table work.

i would recommend working a night job at a restaurant, this way you can ski everyday and still make money. I was dishwasher at the hillcrest and although it's a shitty job with a shitty pay, I got to ski bassically everyday and was even able to go heliskiing for free, 2-3 times, which totally makes it worth it. Plus you can eat as much food as you want so you save $ on food.

Revelstoke was so damn sick last season. Amazing snow all the time, and so many opportunities once you're at the top. I would try to get a job at a bar, or the strip club or in the expensive restaurant by the gondola, Rockford or something?

You'll find something good and cheap there.

Would it be better to wait and have more money saved up and possibly miss out on rentals/jobs, or go now with about $8000 saved up between us 4 and try to settle out everything earlier?

I would think you could start looking into rentals / jobs now and put out some feelers so you have a bit more a lay of the land, if you're going to hold off. No sense going in there and cold calling looking for places. I would not have thought it would have been that hard to get a place in revy, more a matter of the price going up once there's more demand. But I could be wrong.

I'm moving out there this December too. Seems like it would be a lot easier finding a good rental and job if I was moving in September... but I have grad school and TAing to worry about. I need to figure out my quiver.

I've heard a good set of light skis with touring bindings, a pair of all purpose all mountains skis, and then a pair of big fatties are a good set to have.

Yeah I think that program qualifies for the whole interior and arguably the rockies in general. My quiver is Jeffreys (all purpose), Caylors (big fatties), and am looking at adding Viciks (touring) around the beginning of Jan before the snow gets deep. It covers your bases pretty well without getting out of control to the point where you've got 6 pairs of skis in your closet.
