i owned both and i preferred this years saga. better quality, good buy for a 3L suit. Quite warm and big. This years first drop i felt was sick but saga really did well this year.
I can't really compare both companies as I've only owned a first drop item, while I've never bought anything from saga. I bought pants last year and overall I'm satisfied in my purchase. They're not the greatest quality pants but I think they kept me warm on the icy slopes of the east coast. If you live on the west coast, you will encounter problems on powder days as the material they used isn't the most waterproof material out there. Remember the price you pay too, you basically get what you pay for and if you live on the East coast I would definitely buy an item from first drop; it's not like you'll be doing snow angels all day everyday. Plus I've heard that they don't use the same materials for this year's stuff so things are probably getting better.
Another thing I like about first drop is their customer service, David Lesh is super friendly and he answered my emails fast; covering various questions.
I definitely recommend first drop, and I'll probably buy more from them and you should too.
Depends what type of riding your doing. I've heard first drop is much warmer but less technical. As saga is a shell but full on waterproof. I have this years saga and I love
first drop if you don't wear layers like every skier should
saga, definitely
saga, the fabric is crazy thick
saga, its sturdy as hell
first drop, its customizable, but I think its general suit design is poor
overall, saga saga saga, get it and you'll thank yourself again and again, best suit I've ever owned by far
warmer - first drop
quality - saga
thicker - first drop? i dont know how to answer that one
last longer - who knows both are brand new suits this year
better selection - thats up for debate(i say first drop)
take in to consideration wether you want a shell and layer underneath or a super warm jacket. i have fd and i wear like 4 layers underneath thats how cold i get.
1. FD is insulated so that on its own is going to be warmer, but if you layer up as a skiier should then Saga will be a more effective jacket. It is totally windproof, some dude wore it out in 0F with 50mph wind and had no wind coming through the jacket. Get some tech thermals either way.
2. FD quality last year was awful, Saga has been improving each year. This year it seems like Saga has the edge, material is really tech and there have already been a few posts of people shredding their FD jackets on NS.
3. As #1.
4. From these early reports i would say Saga.
5. Personal choice. FD is more customisable but i think Saga looks better.
