Who do you think is the richest skier?

i would have to say and i hate to say it but tom wallisch just because of the fact that his sponsors have a lot of money and i have seen him in a lot of ads lately... what do yu guys think? no hate please

No, he is not. 

Are you really saying that Tom Wallisch is more known than Seth Morrison?  Are you really that out of touch with the ski scene anywhere except newschoolers?

Look at the powder poll:  Seth Morrison and Shane Mcconkey are the only guys who have won that, Wallisch does not even place.

Tom Wallisch has a long way to go before he is Seth Morrison.

To the rest of the world he is new on the scene.  Good for him with the euro gold, I was unaware of that.

If Tom Wallisch wins the powder poll I will be impressed.  Good luck with that.

You are correct that I was wrong about the Euro x-games.  Good for Tom.

Freeskier awards are voted on by this block of people.  So it does not surprise me that Wallisch won.

What many of you don't seem to realize, is that no one on TGR cares very much about Wallisch.  Until he is killing it in AK, they won't.  I'm sorry if me being honest about your idol is tough, but that is just the way it is.

So yes, in this demographic he is popular, but he is not on top of skiing.  The folks on TGR care a whole lot more about Seth Morrison than Wallisch. 

What I would like to see, is a regional breakdown.  It would be interesting to see who is voting for Wallisch, and who is voting for Candide, etc.....Somehow I don't think folks in Jackson Hole think Tom Wallisch is more relevant than Seth Morrison or Candide Thovex.

Maybe TGR will take Wallisch to AK this year.  That would be interesting.  If he were to enter a big mountain comp, like the one in Snowbird, and do well, that would score some major points with the big mountain crowd.

It does not matter how many Freeskier awards Wallisch wins.  He can win all the park medals he wants, he will be looked at as one of the best by a very large demographic until he slays big mountain lines.  Tanner Hall has crossed that barrier, maybe someday Wallisch will too.

Where are you asking these people?  Jackson Hole? Squaw Valley? Alta?  I can promise you that would not be the case at any of those spots.

I guess I have to remember that many of you are very young, and this is your world.  There are lots of people who love to ski, who are deeply into it, who buy movies every year, who don't know who Tom Wallisch is.

Newschoolers is only a part of the skiing world.

you act like soooo many more people care about TGR and big mountain than park. i hate to break it to you, but park is just as big of a park of freeskiing as big mountain is. in fact, you could say it is bigger because of the publicity the x-games and dew tour and events like that are bringing to skiing. i would be surprised if you asked 100 people randomly and more of them said they knew who seth morrison or sage is than tom wallisch or bobby brown.

Jon makes the most as from "skiing" ... keep in mind simon/tanner have alot of money and a solid portion of that money comes from their companies.... and juuuuust to clear things up wallisch is currently making a BOATLOAD of money. More than enough to be comfortable; lets just say he makes more than 75k per year from skiing which is quite alot even if thats all he made.... ( who really cares about these stats anyway -- 99.99999999999% of anyone who skis will ever make more than 20-25k/year directly from skiing anyway even if they were really good. ex. 80 of the top 100 skiers in the WORLD make this much money... when are you going to be in the top 20 of all the freeskiers in the world? Ask yourself that question.

Are you the spokesman for TGR. I wonder what Todd Jones,co-founder of TGR, would concur seeing as TGR is working with TNF in filming their NZedits.....

Lose the chip on your shoulder over TWall. You don't see others on here bashing Seth, Candide,Alba and other Pow/Big Mountain skiers. They are all amazing athletes in there own right, with different styles,strengths, skills and passions. Don't discount Tom,or any other park skier's talent simply because they don't measure up to your standards.They are ALL gifted!!

TGR has over 74,000 members.
NS has over 150,000...

No clue how many readers powder has but not a huge number. X games had 43 million viewers (http://www.denverpost.com/extremes/ci_14407668). Seth, Shane, and Tom are probably right about the same but when you said Mark and Sage that was wrong. It's crazy to say they are more well known than Tom, not sure how many viewers dew tour had when he won but it was undoubtedly more than the TGR community. And he was on fuel TV...Big mountain isn't getting less popular, but newschool skiing is exploding.

i don't think he's saying that. I think he's just saying that TGR is a similar community to NS, but with a different opinion. And there are more people that are interested in people that ski Big Mountain than Those who ski park, wheather or not that is true, i don't know. But all in all, i don't think that Wallisch makes as much as Seth does or Tanner or Simon either. I wonder if Tanner is making much these days anyway. Who knows.

he's most likely making the same, he is a partner or co founder or something like that, of armada, which probably brings him in some mad scrilla. But as to the richest skiers, its most likely 1. Jon Olson because he races too.
2. Tanner Hall, like i said before co owner/founder or whatever of armada
3. I'm gonna say Seth Morrison, been around for a shitload of time

The tgr example sort of represents the demographic of skiers that ski alot and are part of the culture.
sure ns has a lot more members but there are way more skiers of the tgr demographic, and seth has been icon for them for years and most of them have no clue who tom wallisch is. not only that most of newschoolers knows who seth is too.

as far as random people go i'd say they are equally unknown
you gotta be consistantly winning x games to be known to the general public just because millions of people watch them barley means shit. unless they follow skiing i doubt they remember who even won it a month later.

more members sure, but as far as actual skiers the tgr demographic has way more than newschool skiing, and like i said both demographics know about seth only one knows about tom.

How the hell would anyone hear seths name? Assuming .25 percent of people who watched X Games remembered the name of the winners, that is still 100,000 people...I don't think more people ski big mountain anymore, park skiing is growing too fast.

and look at it this way, in the case of tom, try asking 100 people from any ski town in the west. let's say, idk mammoth. (to make it interesting) now even though theres a large park scene, i'm still quite sure more would know of sage, or seth, than tom. thats fair right? now take an east coast ski town and ask 100 people. youll get the ski bums who would know sage or seth over tom, youll get the kids who would hopefully know both, but most likely tom, youll get the parents of those kids who, if avid skiers, would know seth or sage over tom as well. idk it just seems like in general more people who have been around would know sage or seth. speaking as someone who started really freestyle skiing a few years before tom (not WAY earlier, but earlier), i still think of sage and seth as bigger names than tom, and im deep in the freestyle skiing scene. just my 2 cents

thats exactly what i'm trying to say. sure tom is in the lime light right now but seth is so ingrained in skiing anyone who calls themselves a skier should know who he is. and a good majority of older skiers don't pay attention to newschool skiing.

Anyone who thinks that it isn't Lindsay Vonn is an idiot. Since when is Jon Olsson a household name outside of the ski industry? Even Tanner? It's definitely a racer. And I'm placing my bets on the $6 million that Lindsay Vonn makes annually just in endorsements.

What if you asked 100 people from Miami...and I think a lot of people would know seth because of his pro model and how he used to be, but sage hasn't ever really been in the limelight to the general public. Seth and Tom would be about even I think, but Sage would be way less.

first, whatever your tgr friend told you, Tom W is actually the most marketable skier in the industry. period. and there s no point in arguing, talk to any team manager of any brand they will tell you that.


then about whos richer,

i guess Jon is the winner. i m really surprised no one mentionned CANDIDE, who won many x games, and gets paid redic amount by quicksilver.

tanner must have had a lot of money to start his own filming company.
Simon also made a lot of $.

are we talking skiers or park skiers? because if we are talking skiers as a whole, Lindsey Vonn destroys Tom in marketability.

if we are talking only park/newschool skiing then yeah tom is definatley the most marketable.

but i'm not arguing about marketability i'm just sayin that seth is more well known to people as a whole than tom.

Not gonna read the whole thread but Wallisch is going to blow up big time in the next couple years. Once he places at X (I know he won gold in Europe) he will be the new face of freeskiing.. His GoPro edit has over a fucking million views already, people are starting to know who he is outside of the ski industry. Sure he's probably doing really well for himself now but he's nowhere near his peak.

Present day though I'd go with Jon, not only does he make a ton of money from his sponsors etc. but he is also quite the business man if I'm not mistaken.

there's a big difference between being wealthy and looking 'rich'. just because jon drives a lamborghini he's not necessarily more wealthy than any of the others. he could just be a wanker. i honestly don't know.

the really wealthy ones would be the european racers who are sponsored personally (not team) by audi etc. audi will pay BIG money to have the 4 rings cross the line with the best time. to have their logo on the top of a podium in a country where skiing is more than a national sport, but rather a part of daily life, is almost priceless.

simon and tanner would have a bit of money, there's no denying that. but a clothing company like oakley only has a certain amount of cash they can give ONE of their pros. likewise with north face etc.

There was an article about skier's salaries in Skiing Magazine a couple years back. As of 2007, Jon Olsson is the highest paid pro freeskier with I believe $400,000 a year, with Simon and Tanner taking second at $300,000. Most of the money I guess comes from sponsor contracts, but I good deal of it is supplemented with contest winnings and various investments or whatnot. Yet, this info is a few years old, so don't quote me on anything. I'm sure it's changed a little bit over the past 3 or 4 years.
