''this is somewhat biased as I come from a farm''
Then you SHOULD be voting conservative, without a doubt. Their policies are quite likely in your favour. I couldn't say the same if you were living in a city, but in your case, a conservative vote makes a lot of sense. I'm obviously not saying that there's nothing going in the conservatives' favour. In my case, and in the case of many Canadians not in your position, i would have to contend that is is not the case that conservative policies would be to their advantage.
I also agree that certain issues have been blown out of proportion, including homosexual rights, which is essentially a non-issue (they should have the same rights as everyone else). Abortion legislation will not change the fact that people will get abortions, they will simply get them illegaly. So you're right, these are not the things we should be talking about. However, I will add to this list the sponsorship scandal. Everyone is harping on it, asking for the answers, when Martin is doing what he can to investigate. 9/11 took 3 years, and yet everyone seems to think the entire truth about a well-executed scheme like this one can be uncovered practically overnight. There are two scenarios. One, Martin did not know about the sponsorship scandal. Two, he did, and since taking over leadership of the government has tried to rectify the problem. Let's leave it at that for now, and see what the new commissions find out.
I'd also like to add to your list of issues taht should be discussed concerning parrty policies, and these have come forward. One is, where does harper intend to get all his money? You cannot cut taxes, eliminate the debt, spend huge sums on defense AND fix medicare. It's downright unrealistic, and as skeptical as people are of the liberal promises (and rightly so, I believe, on some accounts, such as child care, which isn't happening), I think they should also take Harper's words with several grains of salt. Second is the americanization of the country. The elimination of cultural regulations will cripple the canadian music industry and destroy the CBC, cooperation with American foreign policy is not an option (we are peacekeepers, not policemen, and that is how things should stay), and spending money on Carriers and other such things amounts far greater unnecessary expenditure than anything the liberals have done.
My analogy was meant to make no sense, just as yours doesn't, because they are saying essentially the same thing. However, there is no point in debating this.
Finally, I have to say that your response was well put and well thought out, and I very much appreciate that. If only that sort of argument were made more often, we'd have far better discussions.

Here I am
And I’ll wait in line
