Car Audio Assistance (Amps/Subs)

Not sure if this belongs in M/A or NSG but whatever, anyways I have been looking at an Alpine type R sub shown here http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_14954_Alpine_SWR-1242D.aspx

This model, another (newer) type R has less impedance. And is slightly sleeker.

I'm only buying one subwoofer.

I have been reading things for hours about wiring and what not, and quite frankly I am confused and tired of deciphering what all this stuff means.


I will rate you 10/10 for whoever supplies coherent and valuable answers.

Here are some things that will help better determine what you want to do.


1. what type of music will you be listening to and what kind of vehicle will it go in.
2. even the greatest sub wont sound good if its on a cheap amp
3. class d amplifiers are made specifically for subs, they are the tits
4. sealed or ported enclosure?



wiring subs isnt really that hard. Get a bud or two who has some knowledge and go at it. Get a wiring kit thats appropriate for what you're trying to do (look like you need an 8 gauge kit)


and are you set on buying Alpine products? I'm not the biggest fan and I've always been very partial to Memphis Car Audio and JL Audio. They make outstanding products, even in their lower-end products. Check out the Memphis M1, and the JL W1.


A 1 channel amp will be fine, cause you arent adding more than 1 sub. You need to determine if you are going to wire the amp for 2 or 4 ohms as well (this depends on the model of sub you buy).


here's some general info that might help you out.

1. make sure you're fuse is w/in 1-2ft of your battery and that its big enough for your sub (wiring kit wil solve most of this for you)
2. use the correct air volume for your box, it will help with the sound quality
3. SOUND DEADENING is a major factor. Any sub will sound awful when the car is rattling and buzzing around. Pick up a roll of Peel N Seal and lowe's for like $12. Its made with the same basic materials as dynamat and hushmat and costs like 1/3 as much

Wow thanks a lot! This actually really helped me, and I don't know why I am set on Alpine, the prices were alright and they seem to make semi decent products for the money.

no, class D amps are the higher end amps that are used normally as "competition amps", but i along with many other people use class D amps for daily use because you get a lot better quality out of your sub
