Experience with the Canon EF 28mm 1.8?

Has anyine on NS used this. I have been reading some reviews and it seems like a decent wide angle option for the price but I would like some firsthand esperince.

i'd personally go for something wider than a 28, 28 is more of a standard focal length than a true wide angle

Ya i have been looking around for something wider. I just want to stay away from the whole fisheye effect because I think it looks silly.

I was checking this one as an alternative out as well

you know it's going to be cropped right? I'm thinking the 1.8 one is going to be a lot better that the 2.8 one. maybe not though. Check fredmiranda.com for lots of reviews on lots of stuff.

The thing is, 20mm still isn't extremely wide for the t2's crop frame sensor. I had the Canon 10-22 before selling it for the Tokina 11-16, and there wasn't much of a fish-eye effect unless it was zoomed all the way out. Even then, it was generally only noticeable with people in the frame on the periphery. The same is true of the Tokina. Although 1.8 would for sure give you more DOF, the 2.8 isn't bad, especially if you have a longer prime to fill in for those shots when you need it (the canon 50mm 1.8 is definitely the best bang for your buck in this respect, although I opted for the more solidly built 1.4). Then again, we all have our own specific needs...

That's because neither of those are fisheye lenses.... They are both rectilinear wide-angles.

28 mm isn't that wide on a crop sensor depending on your definition of wide. It's pretty wide depending on your shot and your subject. It's not wide if you are shooting jumps from the deck or interiors, or trying to get exaggerated perspectives.

yeah, are you trying to get a normal perspective lens? cause the 28 on a crop will kind of be like that. try an EF-S lens if you don't plan on switching to full frame or film bodies. If you're trying to get a nice lens for shots of decks of jumps and you want something wide but not super distortion causing, then you either need to get an EF-S one, or a wider EF one. Plus, DOF is also related to the size of the film plane, or sensor in this case.

Correct... my point exactly. The OP said at one point he didn't want to go too wide, because he wasn't a fan of the fisheye effect. I was trying to illustrate that on a 1.6x crop, you don't get much distortion at all with those lenses, while still being much wider than the 28.

The cropped image is not a function of the lens, it's due to the camera you're using. It's relative to the full format images produced by cameras like Canon's 5D. Basically your effective focal length (on all of your lenses) is going to be longer than the lens actually says. I'm assuming you have a kit lens though that came with your camera. If that's the case, set it to 28mm and that will be the same focal length as the lens you're looking at (albeit with a much smaller maximum aperture).

you have  1.6x crop camera, so the 28 will be kind of like a 50. the ef-s lenses are made for crop cameras and create an image circle for the smaller sensor.
