Dont leave rechargeable batteries in the wall

Im sitting here in the kitchen on the computer with my stepdad next to me watching my brothers outside. All of a sudden I hear a PSSSSSSSS almost like steam coming out of something. I go what was that? He goes I didnt hear anything. So I brush it off. Not even 40 seconds later I hear POP POP PSSSS.

I go okay your not going to tell me you didnt hear that. We go over to the hallway where the noise was coming from and I see lights flickering under our office door. I go Holy shit its on fire!

Finds out the rechargeable battery we had in the wall exploded while charging. There is literally nothing left of the battery, it disintegrated into ash and burnt a hole in our hardwood floor and around the wall. So be careful when your charging things. Batteries CAN explode. It's just a good thing we were in the house when it happened

some kids in my school plugged 7 9 volt batteries together on a friday, left them running through each other all weekend and on monday morning during first period they exploded (before the teacher noticed they were set up like that) and pieces of battery hit kids all the way across the room

there was a girl sitting in the front row right in front of the batteries who got hit on the forehead and she was bleeding and shit. it was crazy.

This also goes for battery packs for cameras and other electronics. They may not explode, but leaving them plugged in for too long can cause static discharge and eventually deter its power capabilities by up to 50%.

We did that in 6th grade. We had like 5 all connected to each other and then to a central paper clip. We went off to lunch and left it all connected haha. We came back and the teacher had to talk to the class outside the room. The batteries didn't explode, one of them just oozed acid all over the desk. The teacher was actually fascinated with it haha. One of the best teachers I had.

wait so i shouldnt leave my macbook pro plugged in when im using/not using it? i thought when it finishes charging it just runs off the outlet and the battery is left alone

if you are using a smart charger then most of the time you have nothing to worry about but its normally, lets say the stock charger that you get with your remote control car that are the problems. they just keep pumping power into the batteries where as the smart chargers cut off after the appropriate charging time. the ones you really have to worry about are lithium ion batteries. if you over charge those they will swell in size and will blow up and if its a decent sized battery you could get hurt pretty bad. so upgrade to smart chargers if you havent already and use stock ones sparingly and pay close attention to them if you do use em.

wait so can i leave my ipod plugged into the wall with my makeshift wall charger (computer to ipod chord plugged into my phone charger plugged into the wall) overnight?

yeah thats fine as long as you unplug it first thing in the morning. Now if you left it charged for 3 days perhaps, it would noticeably effect its battery life

i worked at a hobby shop selling r/c cars/planes/boats/shit for a few years, i gave a kid that worked with me a slushie to stick a screwdriver in a lithium polymer battery. the result was like green fireworks. and mild chemical burns.

also if you put lithium ion bats in the wrong way it can cause fires due to reverse polairty heating up the lil springs on your charger. rechargable batterys are dangerous.
