(Reuters) - A 5-year-old girl and 23-year-old man who were killed in a collision on a Wyoming ski slope on Christmas Eve both died from massive chest injuries, coroner's officials said on Monday.

Craig Shirley, 23, was snowboarding at a high rate of speed Friday afternoon at a ski area south of Casper, Wyoming, when he slammed into Elise Johnson, 5, and her mother, 31-year-old Kelli Johnson, authorities said.

Elise Johnson and Shirley died of blunt force trauma. Kelli Johnson suffered a head injury and was in stable condition at a Casper hospital, Natrona County Coroner Connie Jacobson said.

Jacobson said her research shows a double fatality from a ski collision is rare at best. "I can't find any literature that shows where an accident between two skiers killed both; this is very unusual," she said.

Wyoming officials said the Johnsons and Shirley, all of Casper, Wyoming, were experienced skiers, with Kelli Johnson a member of the area's ski patrol. Elise Johnson was the only one of the three wearing a helmet.

The Johnsons had stopped near the end of an advanced run at Hogadon Ski Area so Kelli Johnson could help her daughter with her skis when Shirley crashed into them, said Lt. Mark Sellers of the Natrona County Sheriff's Office.

"It's the first fatality of this magnitude that anyone can remember at Hogadon," Sellers said.

The double fatality at the modest-sized Hogadon, one of nine ski areas in Wyoming, comes amid an overall decline in serious injuries or deaths at developed ski areas in the United States, according to the National Ski Areas Association.

Roughly 40 people die in accidents at ski resorts every year, or about four people per million skiers and snowboarders, according to a study by the ski association.

The overall rate of reported ski injuries has dropped in half since the early 1970s because of improved equipment, the use of helmets and stepped-up safety campaigns, according to association findings.

some assbag slams into a 5-year old and kills her. people need to smarten the fuck up, pay attention, and realize hills are a family resort and you dont need to be bombing around like youre fucking impressing someone, especially since it was probably some cute little green run in which the mother was slowly plowing along holding her daughter in front of her

good riddance to that toolbox, vibes to the mom who lost her daughter on a casual day of family fun

If you can't ski or ride fast and in control then don't ski or ride fast, simple as that.
that is just plain fucked up, at least the guy that hit her died as well, serves him right.  They should resuscitate him and kill him again and again and again.

when i ski, i make sure that if i lose control or fall or whatever i am very clear of anyone. even if it means ski to the side of the hill, or ski slow. ill give up a run or a section of it to make sure everyone is safe, but when i see an open area, then i can gun it. ive heard way to many stories so my friends and i make sure to not be those kids. also when im skiing switch, gunnin it, and see some people, i revert around to stay in complete control so i dont hit them.
even scaring people is something i dont wanna do. if u buzz someone they will be scared to ski and be hit by some asshole.

and helmets... no question, i dont even need to talk about them.

Word man, I'm just a hair less cautious than you but it's all about respect.  Gotta remember we were all n00bs or gapers once.
I think ski patrols need to pull passes/tickets of people who sit in the wrong spots, or at least pull them and make them go to a lecture about how to not be a fucktard, before they get their passes back.

yeah well said deez. but i mean, people have to realize that it doesn't even have to be a mistake that you make. of course, when youre bombing around you may slip up and if you do, others may suffer the consequences just as in this case. but even then, if there are kid around and you just casually bomb by them you might still spook them and cause them to wipe out. you need to be so cautious when youre around beginner level skiers or young kids. they're unpredictable. it's unfair to put them in an environment where they don't feel safe, and sometimes something as simple as weaving through a crowded run can cause people to bail.

anywho, end rant. i just hate seeing innocent people getting hurt (let alone having their lives taken) because of the stupidity of some hotshot kid

today I was skiing across a green run back to where I'm working (took a little break to shred some paid park time ahah) well my edges are not amazing (rust grabs, but not that well :p ) and I slipped on some ice on the little pitch and had a close call with a group of kids sitting on the pitch. see, even me a skier of 12+ years just lost some edge on ice and almost took a kid(s) out. nothing for me but could have rly hurt or scared those kids. so yeah an example the next day. make sure you don't put urself in a bad place. stay safe.

On a much darker side vibes to the entire family. If the mom pulls through it's going to be a very tough rest of her life.

Am I missing something or does it never place blame on the snowboarder? EVERYONE skis at a high rate of speed. It very well may have been his fault OR the two could have been fixing the skis in a blindspot right over a hill or around a bend and he could have only seconds to react. And to one of the posters towards the top, don't ever say someone deserves to die. Thats plain wrong. If anything we should be mourning for all three of the people who were killed/injured. I absolutely hate how people are automatically placing blame on one person when not only are we unsure if it was actually his fault, but also because it is one mistake in his life. I guarantee that if he got his "deserved minutes to see what he had done", he would want to die with the child. ANYONE could have made that mistake.

I hate how all us freeskiers who ski fast get a bad rep because some ass go fast and loses control. People always look at me like FUCK YOU when i go fast but i am always in control. another thing that i didnt realized until i had to attend a saftey class to get my pass back after going into trees and ending up on a closed run is that when you zip past beginer skiers it scares the hell out of them and they may lose control. I was skiing fast down the very far left side of a run and a the beginers beign hard to predict where their going took a hug turn in front of me and i turned and zipped past but it scared him so bad he fell. I felt like a big dick.

thats rough, today i really learned how a helmet can help. my brother took a nasty fall on a rail and the edge of his snowboard slammed into his head after he flipped over, leaving a GIANT dent/gash in his helmet. without a helmet he could have really been in trouble

I completely agree, no one should be saying that the snowboarder deserves to die. He messed up once while going too fast which everyone does. It sucks for everyone +vibes to people who knew them
