Dumb $$ Question

Maybe this is a dumb question but I gotta ask it anyway
How the fuck do you afford to take trips?
I mean skiing is expensive as fuck, do you guys save all summer and go for a few weekends in the winter? Did you save and move to your desired area? Or do you have awesome jobs that pay a lot?
I mean after rent, food and insurance there's not much money left to just dip for a while, especially with the price of gas nowadays.
Do you only take one or two trips a year or have you found a way to make multiple trips a season work?

Food: nearly free if you dont mind eating shit half your life.
Lodging: Search hard and it can always be found really cheap.
Tickets: Liftopia.com or Craigslist.org definetly help.

That being said i still take very few trips every year.

I work as a carpenter and that pays pretty well and then I only take trips to places where I know someone so that I can crash on their floor. I also work hard to find coupons for cheaper tickets places but it is still expensive. There is no really cheap way to do it.

I work at my local grocery store. So that helps. Get some friends to pitch in for gas, eat fast food (7/11, McDonalds, etc..) Stay at cheap hotels.

Really ? This is how you expect to save money ? Buying and preparing your own food is drastically cheaper, not to mention better for you, and after awhile, it tastes better than fast food. Don't get me wrong, I dig some Tbell every once in awhile, but by no means is it a cheap way of eating.

Which I am not, I will continue to leave my diet in the hands of greasy fry cooks.

I know it is cheaper to make your own. I just suck at it, and never have time.

i moved to salt lake city. cheap rent, easy enough to find a job, and under 30 minutes to the ski area.

There is only one way to get better man, just go for it... Seriously though, as Home and Garden as it sounds, search out some baller recipes on the internet, and just follow the directions. Most of the time, you get a legit meal, and once you figure out a recipe that works, you can tweak it to your own liking. PS does anyone know of an NS cooking cult ? Because otherwise I'm going to start one.

I think I will, since I'm sitting here thinking about the random things that I've learned from other people that help. Such as if you are making shellfish such as clams, mussels, or oysters, soaking them in a flour/water mixture makes them expel most of the sand they usually have within their shells. I suppose I'll get on the cult making tommorow, since I'm way too exhausted right now to comprehend much more.

I'm so jealous man. I had two dreams in my life, ski as much as possible, and become an architect. I'm 4 years deep in my arch. program and the only thing keeping me from ditching it all and moving out west is the fact I don't quit. Live the dream for those of us who can't.

one of my goals for college is definitely to cook a lot of my own stuff. as much as possible. i figure i can get mad women and shit. if i cook im probably going to be the only person doing so in a quite large area. thus people will come to me and i will be popular

- Cook your own food.
- Don't Drink (not popular but it saved me a shitload of money).
- Travel as little as possible. If you don't live near mountains, doing a season is the only cheap way to ski.
- Lift tickets.. pick a resort, get a season pass. You'll have to save up for this but its way cheaper than going to different resorts and paying daily/weekly rates. Even if its say 3-4 trips to the same mountain, a season pass will be cheaper.
- Rent: share with lots of people. If you live in Europe you can usually find a sofa to crash on for like 100 euros a month. Or just live in your car but make sure you insulate it.

I dont care who you are but you can succesfully make a PB & J sandwich. OR buy some cold cuts, letus, tomatoe, cheese then throw on some mayo or mustard or whatever floats your boat and bam you have a suprisingly tasty sandwhich that is basically idiot proof.

Drinking is so fucking expensive. Perfect example is me and my brother. I drink basically every weekend and he doesnt drink at all, we both work around 20 hours a week and he has  ssssooo much more money than me.

Depending on where you drink your looking at around $25 a week for a two four or many times that if you like clubbing and shit.

I bought my season pass really early in the summer... which pays for itself after 4 days of riding and I always fill the car with friends to make gas more reasonable. Eat spaghetti/ ramen noodles, split a keg with some buddies, and sleep on the floor.

I have had 13 people in 2 standard hotel rooms before= smelly but dirt cheap.

another idea- get a job at a hotel in a major chain. you can then get rooms for like $45 a night.

If that doesn't work just put it on the card :)

I work, a lot. Eight months of 60 hour work weeks, and now recently down to 50s. Although, calling in sick on a powder days means I work less...

Planned out my trip to Revelstoke recently, for me and a friend, budget was pretty high. Grabbed 1 more dude to come, saved a couple hundred dollars on splitting gas, food, and hotel bill. Found a really nice, real cheap hostel, saved even more. It has a kitchen, saved even more. If you really want to go, you will find ways to work it into your budget. I set up a separate account, and saved anything I could into it each paycheque, and that's my trip expenses for any trip I want to take.




As a side note, cook cult would be legit.

I started laying it out last night, my only issue is I've seen other cults get very cluttered very fast, and then die. I plan on making this a publicly viewed cult, so all of NS can benefit, with categories such as single meals, couple meals, ski trip meals, etc. etc. etc... I just want to make sure I have everything laid out, stickied, and maybe provide some filler before it " goes live ". So within a few days I'll make a thread in NSG with the cult name / advertising it once. Glad to hear people are interested though !

I wish i could so bad. Having an all dorms college with no suites sucks so bad. My friends from other schools that have kitchens are so lucky and they don't even know it. It's not like i don't want a dining hall at all but it would be nice to cook my own food besides microwavable shit.

haha i dont drink much during the winter not to be thrifty, i just like skiing more then drinking and it would probably save me money if i werent spending it on weed instead.

but on another note, ski trips can be done for dirt cheap if you have the resources, split gas, cook spagehtti, and clip tickets, or green pass it, depending which resort youre at. whats the saying? where there's a will there's a way

Learn a little self control. Don't drink as much, don't smoke as much, don't purchase luxuries at the grocery store, don't buy a bunch of clothes and treat your gear well.

It's really easy to save money if you try a little.

I'm lucky to live pretty close, but I work one night a week and pretty much every cent goes straight to gas money. Carpooling rocks when everyone helps pitch for gas.
Oh, and prime tomato soup recipe you can make anywhere fo free if you're running low on food moniez:
