Anti-raves act of 2011

I couldn't find a thread on this, but it needs to be posted...

"California State Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D- San Francisco) has introduced a bill that would ban "raves" on public properties, and severely restrict public events in private facilities to properly licensed business owners, only. It will mean no more of a culture that can change the world. I mean, this is just as bad, if not worse, than alcohol prohibition, and would go just about as well...

Besides, do you really want to have a $10,000 fine, if your night-time neighborhood fundraiser goes for 4 hours, and you accidentally played 'prerecorded' music? Not to mention, it's targeting the rave scene, a group of philosophers, artists, engineers, politicians and lovers(people, real people). This is the only life that we know that we have to live, we'd like to be allowed to live it. Don't let this suppressive bill pass, for the sake of our country's claim to 'freedom,' and for the sake of sanity, free thought, and community, don't let this bill pass!"


Even if you are not involved with the electronic music scene, it is blatantly clear that this bill is meant to directly affect a very specific group of people, and the reasoning behind it is broad, vague, and unjustified. Please sign the petition against this bill (you can do it anonymously) if you do not support unwarranted discrimination against a mostly harmless group of people.

I think raves are kind of retarded, that being said, this is just another example of the government abusing it's power.

Despite that, this is still obviously offhand discrimination. The point here isn't necessarily to save raves, it is to make sure basic rights aren't needlessly stripped away in an effort to resolve issues politicians might not even understand. I'd still sign the petition if it was an effort to stop attendance at Justin Bieber concerts.

This bill doesn't ban raves....
It bans any gathering on public property(except weddings) that use pre-recorded music and last longer than 3.5 hours.

I've got a few questions.

what reasons does the government state for passing this bill?

why are raves bad? drugs? noise? (semi-legitimate reasons)

I have never been to a true "rave" but i have been to some similar events and it does seem mostly harmless except for drug use.

i hate raves and iv seen some people ruin there lives because of rave culture, but i dont hate it this kind of bill shouldnt pass.

I haven't been able to find explicit reasoning, but the timeframe does correlate to a few deaths that have happened from OD's at shows. Obviously correlation doesn't justify causation, but that's about all I have found so far...bills similar to this have been attempted over the years, and have been mostly unsuccessful.

This really seems to be an effort toward the broader issue of drug abuse. Unfortunately, a bill like this would not stop the shows from occurring, it would just drive them underground, where there would be no regulation and the problems they are attempting to resolve would only proliferate. Not to mention drug use is such a broad issue that even if this was successful in any way, it would do little to nothing to alleviate the problem.

I'm fine with putting age restrictions on the shows (it's seriously fucked up to see 15-16 year olds at stuff like this) and maybe regulating size, but an outright ban is only going to take problems completely out of the government's hands.

Sidenote: a legit rave is about the music and the people--it's the few that go to them for the sole purpose of getting fucked up that make the scene look bad.
