Anybody who's ever been to Hawai'i, put all your experiences and opinions in this thread. I am thinking about applying for transfer to the University of Hawaii at Manoa after my freshman year of college. I've never been there before but I'm going twice this year so that will determine whether I go to school there or not. It's always been a place that's really fascinated me so I figure why not go to college down there and see what goes from there.

Seriously though, Hawaii sounds like a pretty cool place to go to college... if you are into surfing. But come on, this is a ski forum. The majority of the answers you'll get are likely to be related to the fact that you can't ski in Hawaii. (Actually you can, not the point though.)

really really nice place, i went to Maui, not the big island which is where i assume the uni is. locals are all awesome, but there is too many rich spoilt fucks. i like to vacation there, live there, eh maybe not

if I didn't like skiing so much, there wouldn't be another place I would rather live. My last girlfriend grew up there and still has a lot of family so it was cool to go see the non touristy side of hawaii as well as the culture that is still pretty alive.

That being said. If you're not native, you will be the minority and treated like so

He's using stereotypes to get across a point that is likely only to be stereotypically correct. Nothing to get worked up about; you probably aren't Mexican anyway. That's like the average NSer getting upset on the behalf of a black person who was insulted because they can "identify with the culture".

yeah every single hawaiian in the whole country of hawaii just sits around on the beach all day in a pile of his own feces and sweat because he is too lazy to even get up due to the fact that he's a hawaiian living in hawaii

how about you go ask outside people who have worked/lived in hawaii before making yourself look like a jackass?

fact is hawaii is a very lazy, laid back and tight-knit local community and they will rid of any threat to that way of living... but if you're into that, hawaii is your ticket. its not an insult, its the truth.

honolulu sucks, if youre gonna go to the u of hawaii do it on the big island is seems much more ideal unless youre into 50% grimey ass city with a huge meth problem and 50% ultra mega touristy waikiki scene jam packed with 463735 tourists at all times. i backpacked kauai with a friend for three weeks in august and its a pretty awesome island. locals arent of the idiot variety and its a much slower paced spot. honolulu vs kauai were pretty much opposite scenes the way i experienced it.

Kauai is the shits. So damn chill and so beautiful. Hanakapaiai hike was the fucking bomb. The thai food in hawaii is to die for. Don't fuck with the other islands Kauai is the place to be.

yeah went there for a little while and it was almost claustraphobic being trapped on an island like that. the hawaiians seem pretty ignorant gotta say...   a lot of surf bums. But from what i saw seems like they party hard, have a lot of fun. A lot of hot girls.

That said i'm sure you will get a very good idea of what its like when you visit

and to all the people talking about Kauai, thats where i really want to go next, on Maui i liked Hannah and the rain forest, which is what i gather Kauai is mostly like, less touristy.

anyone ever dive Hawaii? I dove the cathedrals off Lanai. excellent visibility

Not diving but i snorkeled tunnels. Got a pretty cool drop off and a shit load of fish but its a bit shallow in places you feel like your gonna scape your chest which is not good.

That is the best part about kauai, you get the hot tourists on the main beaches and downtown, but it is so easy to get away from the crowds. Everything is super accessible, but low key at the same time. Another thing I loved about kauai is the amount of freshwater on the island. I spent more of my time in rivers, pools, and waterfalls than I did on the beach or in the reefs. If you are looking for rain forest hit up kauai, it is jungle as fuck.

Its a dope place man.  I could totally see going to college there.  Great place to kick back on what free time you do have from the books.  Basically anything water related is fun.  But whoever said the inland is ghetto is right.  Don't think its some tropical paradise everywhere because its not.  Sure the weathers nice, but the cities have the same issues as other cities in America.  That said, it is way more fun than most cities in America.  Having nice weather is a plus.  You can do shit at night in a T shirt and shorts, with out a problem.  In my eyes, that's legit.

Oh but you can totally get away from the ghetto's, and get into tropical shit.  You just gotta take a hike into the mountains, or go to a state beach.  The ghetto's aren't really that bad however, its like any other city. You know where to hang out, and likewise you know where not to hang out.

i'm not into the whole tropical place vacation idea. i get sun sick and im usually just miserable. but the world market on waikiki is a pretty cool place and having lots of tourists around all the time isnt always a terrible thing if you know what i mean.
