The salomon quest boots have an interchangeable sole interface which allows Dynafit and Alpine binding compatability. Apparently, the sole toe block likes to shear off mid ski attempting to snuff out its user.

The inserts pulled out that the boot fell apart.

So the part that goes into the toepiece binding broke off and he ended up with a severely broken leg?

basically, but its much worse than a broken leg.
the problem is that this has happened with the Quest boot many times and Salomon has gotten tons of complaints for it, yet they've never had a recall or really ever done anything about it

There is a lawsuit in the works after one of the injuries caused by them, no? Someone should write up a summary of all the stuff thats gone down on TGR about this boot. I dont think it'll pertain to many people on NS, but its kind of shocking how little Salomon has really done to arrest this problem.

The tech-fitting boot lug was an option on the Salmon Quest boot. They only released a few sets (50?) of the sole lugs and were all recalled after the incident. They are no longer for sale.
While the Salomon tech fittings looked the same as the Dynafit fittings, they were manufactured out of a much softer metal, and had less "meat" to them. Lou from WildSnow tested them as well and tore a pair out on the bench.

reading that made me sad, he seems like a genuinely nice person. I hope the can fix his knee to the point he can ski again, or at least walk. Vibes for him

They have been recalled (I believe they were in June) but besides that Salomon has handled the situation quite poorly. Also, the tech fittings ARE for sale again now, I can only assume they have re-worked them. Unfortunately we live in a culture so obsessed with lawyers and insurance that Salomon can't just deal with Dalton themselves. He is undergoing extremely expensive PT to help rehabilitate himself and he needs all the help he can get to afford it. I'm sure there are a lot of people who work for Salomon who would love to help him out but even paying for the PT would be viewed as an admission of guilt and Salomon would be on the hook for everything (although they should be).
Shitty situation all around.

It's a very shitty situation to have happen.
It's the Quest Pro boot that has the exchangable inserts is it not? The reviews on the Salomon site have people bashing the Quest 8, 10 and 12. It's not true. It was the Quest Pro models that had this trouble. Don't let it discourage you from buying any Salomon. Shit happens. I hope the guy gets better. From what my friend told me today, they had to amputate his leg or something.
Right now, I'm breaking in a pair of Quest 12s. I had my second day on them. It's an amazing boot, although they aren't broken in, they are comfortable and getting more comfortable. The magnesium backbone thing is sweet. I had mine in the touring/walk mode today. I love it. Can't wait to use it again.

His life is completely changed now because of product failure. Correct? And Salomon has yet to do anything for him..? Even though Salomon has some nice products, that is fucked up on their part. They really need to help him out.

Yea, I couldn't really see the leg amputation happening. Too much. I do wish him the best in his recovery, I can't imagine having something like that happen.
As for my Quest boot, it's still early, but everything is solid. I trust it. Like I said, I have a different model than the ones in question.

Holy shit. That is just fucking terrible to read. I cannot imagine how huge of a trump that is to know that you might not be able to ski for the rest of your life due to a faulty piece of equipment. It will be a truly astonishing comeback for that dude.
