when i dont have my car i bum rides between big sky and bozeman. its about 45mi. its sweet you meet so many different people. any of you guys have any good stories?

i have thought about doing it sometimes, but then i always think better of it...its illegal in NH anyways, my friends got in trouble with the police once doing it

I was going from Portland to southern Idaho and caught a ride with a guy who used to be a rep for K2 and was a Colorado ski bum for like 20 years. We talked skiing for like 6 hours straight, it was pretty damn cool.

You definitely meet some strange people hitching though... someday I want to write a book about some of the characters I've ridden with. I think you get a a good cross-section of the American public; people besides the rich bitches in their fancy cars who would never think about picking up a hitcher.

i love jack kerouac.

one time me and my friend, back in seventh grade, were at the skatepark and we didn't have a ride home. so we had to walk. we tried to hitchhike, but then my buddy was walking backwards thumbing and he walked right into a sign. i laughed and he got mad and we ended up seeing these girls that were his brother's friends at 7-eleven

Sometimes i do think twice about it. i am a girl and there are sketchy guys out there. but when hitching a ride around a ski town i feel better, ya know its the ski bum karma.

i think kerouc on the road is great. Ive always wanted to pick up hitchhikers and in return tell them they gotta pay for gas. I think its a pretty good deal.

One of my friends fathers was telling me this: He picked up this girl that lived on his road and before his house so he was going right passed his house. He picked her up and right before he dropped her off his wife was walking past with his sister. He had to give a really good story of what happened to get himself out of that hole. He has never picked up a hitchhiker since.

^Is it really that hard to explain? Unless his wife is incredibly unreasonable I'd see it as being pretty easy to explain. And gravity doesn't exist in your head.

^Shit, that's every guys dream, but If I was a girl, I definately would not hitch hike.

I used to do it alot when I was little though, like 13, turns out when mommies see kids hitchhiking they pick you up real quick, so this one time my friends and I were doing a scavenger hunt for some girl's party, and I just got a ride home from a mommy, got all the stuff at my house, and then hitched back to the girl's house. We just rode her skateboard down her hill while everyone else was wasting time. Haven't tried it for a while though.

yea i usually pick up rides on my way out to the hill, coz i have to hike there sometimes, so i know what its like

its not really the type of thing to try in the midwest. out west though, its no sweat. and sometimes, the yuppies in SUVs are nice. i got a ride in some dudes escalade when they had just come out

Hikin Big Sky is pretty safe. when i was there for the season everyone was way to friendly to be psycho... however i am careful where i do it, all those crazy freaks who just kill ppl for fun. we had some guy down here in Oz kill like 14 ppl just from picking them up as hitchers.
Hitchin is a mad way to cut costs and put more into skiing. We've had this discussion in the unemployed cult... its got great tips. PM me if you want in ppl.

yeah, hitching to the mountain is always no problem. if you've got your equipment with you people will know whats up, and any decent skier will pick you up.

i usually shuttle a person or two back up to their car when i'm going up the pass to winter park. but the last two hitchhikers i've picked up have gotten me high as shit

meh, never tried, but hitchin in the northeast is probably a bad idea anyway. mabye in NH and Maine, but not around me in NY.......

i hick-hike once in a while from our base to the top of the mt. it's about 20mins. but one morning i got in the truck with these guys, the truck reeked of weed but w/e alot blaxe in my town, so we pull into the parking lot and this guys is like : holy shit i think i'm still drunk from last night so i get out of the truck asap and go over to my friend whos a parking lot attendent and he was like i got a ride up with them yeasterday and i'm pretty sure he was hammered then to

i don't hike-hike as much anymore

I told my dad I was going to hitchhike to the mountain once and he freaked out. There's too much that could go wrong if I did because you never know who's going to pick you up

We were backpacking in the Bob Marshall near Cheateu, MT when my frien got really sick. I had to drag him out for 11 miles and up around 3000 feet but we didn't have a car at the trail head. Near the end of the trail we ran into a family who was going in for a week and we explained the problem to them. They then straight up gave us the keys to the car to get home with, those are some damn nice people. We returned the car two days later with a full tank of gas and a cooler with drinks. Yeah, Montana people are just about as nice as they come.

i used to hitch in grand county after skiing the access gates at winter park and after hiking that bearclaw mountain. each and every single f'n time i got picked up it was by another person from the area and they smoked me out. always good people and very safe even for women. although i was usually with someone.

I picked up this girl hitchiking once. Dropped her off, and realized she left her purse in my car. When I went to take it back, her mom answered the door and told me that her daughter had been dead for two years. Shed had died two years ago to the day. Pretty weird huh

the types that hitchhike in the south arent really the ppl youd want to pick up, but id pick up a skier whenever i saw one
