I just tighten them enough to be comfortable, skate to the first chair to see what they're like and adjust accordingly at the top - tighten a ton - and go from there. every chair I adjust for like three chairs until it's perfect
I generally have to tighten a bunch after the first run of 'hard' skiing, i.e. hitting bumps and drops where the boot flexes a lot and loosens up. What works best for me is as tight as I can get the buckles without cutting off blood flow or feeling pain from the pressure. If my feet are moving around in the boot, even a mm or two, laterally or vertically, they need to be tightened. Your mileage may vary, of course. I occasionally unbuckle my bottom two buckles on the chair to alleviate foot cramp.
I tighten my boots as much as possible without them feeling uncomfortable.
Basically I tighten my boots until they start to feel uncomfortable and then loosen them a bit. This way I usually get it right the first time without having to adjust them later.
