Macbook pro to HD TV issue

So i got the mini display to HDMI adaptor and hooked it up to my HD tv. it is making the picture extremely dark and you can barely see what is on the screen. What settings would i adjust on the computer or the tv to make the picture the same as i get on the laptop screen not hooked to the display? Thanks

A lot of TVs come with gimmicky picture settings like hyper contrast and automotion plus...if you just poke around the picture settings, I'm sure your TV has some sort of brightness/contrast/black adjustment. Just fucks wit it
