Need a fernie local's advice on food

I'm planning a trip to fernie next season after I get out of high school (I plan to stay there for about 5-7 days, depends how much cash I can save) and I was going to stay at the Raging Elk hostel mostly because of their inexpensive prices, free pancake breakfast and ski shuttle, and subsequently the washing machines.

Now since this is a hostel, that means there is a community kitchen and I therefore have the possibility of preparing my own food. So if you're a fernie local or have just planned a similar trip, I would like to know there things so I can get a round estimate of my trip's total cost:

1. Where is a food store located?

2. What/how can I eat for the least amount of money as possible?

3. I want to eat out at least once or twice so where is there a good restaurant I can go to?

Beyond these unknown elements I can pretty much calculate a price on my trip so any help is greatly appreciated.

Best mexican restaurant in Fernie is El Guapo attached to Edge of the World Skate Shop
Or..
For sushi there is Yamagoya which is ranked one of the best sushi places in Canada right off 7th avenue
And...
Curry Bowl on 7th avenue as well.

I love the raging elk, you made a good choice. There's a grocery store a few blocks from the hostel so that shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like great places, where's a place I could pick up some groceries? What kind of a food budget should I go in with if I'm staying for approximately a week?

There is a supermarket called overwaitea like 4 blocks form the hostel. I would be prepared to spend about 50-70$ if you want to eat well for a week.

I was thinking about $100 food budget, I just wanted to be sure. I'll make it $150 so I have extra in case of an emergency.

yeah, BIg Bang Bagels is probably the best place in the world, aside from that, theres the Ginger Beef restaurant in down town thats super good. mcdonalds, tim hortons and all that stuff. If your not liking overwaitea then you could go to extra foods which is right beside the Canadian Tire when you first enter the town of Fernie.

I'm not a local but I spent a season there a couple of years back, hopefully this stuff still applies...

Bread is like 10c cheaper per loaf at Overwaitea if you buy the unsliced loaf and then put it through the slicing machine yourself. Go figure. They also have samples at the deli all the time so go tax them. These are kinda ski-bum season-length tips though, I guess.

There's a little butchers shop roughly opposite the library, beside the bank with the red and white logo. Can't remember what it is exactly. Their minced beef is a million times better than Overwaiteas and it's cheaper. Their sausages are also pretty awesome, if it's still the same then they do a big ass bag of them for about $10.

Food is generally cheaper at the huge supermarket at the opposite end of town to the ski field. Only slightly though. If you have a car then it's worth driving down but it's a shit of a walk if it's -30 and you've been skiing all day.

The Brick House (is that what it's called?) used to do a ribs night that was pretty cheap and the ribs are damn good.

Oh and try to avoid getting on the booze. It costs way, way too much. I think jugs of Kokanee at the Grizzly Bar (in the main lodge, upstairs) during happy hour weren't too bad though.

OH! Most important thing, never ever count on there being pancakes at the Raging Elk. There's a sign in the kitchen that says if the kitchen isn't clean there won't be any pancakes in the morning, which basically means if it's a pow day or the staff got mashed the night before then they can't be bothered making up the pancake batter (yeah, it's cook-em-yourself). So leave yourself like half a loaf of bread or something for emergency breakfast.

Random other ski-bum-in-fernie tip:
There's a sweet swimming pool with a water slide and stuff at the Stanford (big hotel on your left as you're heading to the ski field). It doesn't need a room key or anything to get in so if you just swagger in like you own the place you can go for a swim. If anyway asks just claim you're staying in one of the condos that are a couple of hundred metres from the main hotel.

If you don't have a car and you miss the shuttle there's a hitching post at the first little intersection past the bridge out of town. Heaps of locals stop there, we used it every day for a season, never waited more than about 10 minutes. Can be hard to get picked up if you have your skis with you though. Likewise there's a hitching spot at the Y intersection below the Mountain Pantry in the resort village for getting back to town at the end of the day.

Thank you very much, that's the best info I could ask for. I won't have a car as I'm busing it from Winnipeg to Fernie due to my HI Hostels membership discount with Greyhound. Yeah I'm sure the ride will be brutal, but I'm not gonna blow all my grad money on just one plane ticket.

If that's the case with the pancakes, I might just pick up a box of cereal for breakfasts. So would $150 food budget be enough for 5 days? or should I go higher?

Oh I forgot to add: I don't plan on spending much on alcohol, maybe a drink with dinner, but that's it. And the guy who mentioned Montana, my dad's taking me and my brother after my brother graduates which will be the year after next.

Old thread, but I recommend EL GUAPO, i work there and its literally amazing mexican food haha.
Yama goya has great sushi and Currie Bowl has great indian food.
