Has Skiing progressed to that point?

Do you guys think skiing has progressed to a point where it's almost impossible to get your name out there and to become 'famous' in the ski world. Not that I care about all that, I think if your having fun then it doesn't really matter. But if you look at Skatebaording, Biking, Wakeboarding....you never really see any new names that often, it's tony hawk this or Dave mirra that. But at the Freeskiing open, there was a couple unknown kids that are now pretty popular today. I think they were tanner rainville and TJ schiller. I know most sports our all about progression but 810 corks to rails?? It's getting to a point where there is no style, just balls. Maybe it's just that I've been stareing at the Lindsay Lohan pic's too long or something.... Whatever...screw it.. I'd rather be skiing then anything else.. thats all that matters.

Are you suggesting TJ has no style?
I was at the WSI big air, and the only riders with style were the ones who got through.

I think there's definitely still room for riders to get noticed, sure everything is progressing like crazy but there's also a lot more companies with substantial sized teams that are always picking up more riders and there's always even more on the way. If you look at skating and snowboarding you'll see that there are just a lot more sponsored riders than in skiing, I expect that will be how skiing will ultimately become only likely on a somewhat smaller scale. Another example of this is looking at ski movies, 5 years ago you could get one ski movie that included a segment from virtually all the pro skiers out there, now you have to buy 5+ movies each year and you still might not get a segment from everyone.

sponsorship and getting your name out there is a big dream for me and many other skiers... but if you think about it... it's just fun to go out and have fun with your friends and rip it up good or not it's all for fun if you ask me

It is getting harder but thanks to event like the Open there is still plenty of opportunities for unknowns. Same with the VT Open and all those East Coast comps, whistler Open, etc. Those are what the sport needs, grass roots comps. Now look at wakeboarding: it is damn near impossible to get your name out in that sport, and when you do it is a huge deal. Anyone remember when Andrew Adkinson won an X qualifier or some contest? It was huge and he had a huge spread in Wakeboarding. Otherwise it is still the same old guard it has been for the last 4 yrs. It woudl suck if skiing got to be like that.

the direction that skiing is going can only make things better. the cork 810 to rail was more of a milestone than a standard. when hawk landed a 9 a few years back, everyone didnt have to do that to get sponsored. Everyone has their own way of riding. Candide is burly on rails like that, while jon has the smooth, unforced style. people are accepted for their riding abilities in the world of sponsorship. Everyone that cant cork 810 to rail is not going to be dropped from their sponsor. The companies will continue to find new talent, who, has their unique characteristics and style.

Brett: He's b-b-black... Jules: Go on. Brett: He's bald... Jules: Does he look like a bitch? Brett: What? [Jules shoots Brett in shoulder] Jules: DOES HE LOOK LIKE A BITCH? Brett: NO! Jules: Then why you trying to fuck him like a bitch, Brett? Brett: I didn't! Jules: Yes you did. Yes you did, Brett. You tried to fuck him. And Marcellus Wallace don't like to be fucked by anybody, except Mrs. Wallace.

like what the guy right above me just said. I think that wish skateboarding and stuff there are so many different types of riders and types of styles. Skiing, in my opinion will eventually do that. As in snowboarding and skateboarding, everyone does not dominate everything. Skiing may go in that direction where there will be a group of people who kill pipe, some who kill park, and a few who do it all. Whatever happens with it i think that there is still room to get noticed and all that a person needs to do is just kill it and someone will see them regardless of what someone else might be doing that is different. Regardlesss of this, everyone now is has been skiing for a while is gonna keep skiing cuz they love to do it. I know that i will.
Peace

of course we'll keep progressing, but theres no way its all balls no style. every pro skier out there has so much of both its unbelievable. if you work at it, and you've got talent, you'll make it. candide's 810 to rail is like the styliest thing i've ever seen him do.

I dont know about anyone else, but from what i see. There are so many young rippers out there that kill it a lot better than many of the so called pro's. I look at what goes down at places like whistler and it just goes off, but there is so much talent that you have to be even more core the the last to even get a glimps of sponsership. But i return home to alberta and the skill level drops drastically but the few people who can semi throw down are sponsered but little shops and ski companies, getting the free schwag. To me, its more that they are the best peopel in the area to showcase a product because there is no competition or ther talent to compete agains. Also i am finding more and more everything is becomeing more steezed out. People dressing to impress. If you are outragous enough or stand out enough on the hill, and are even semi decent, i can see it being very easy to get hooked up with sponsors and what not. On a last note, yes the sport is still progressing year by year and new trends become more poppular, a new style is formed and gets all the coverage, but its all just skiing so go out and have fun. thats my bit
later
I just wanna ski, is that to much to ask in life

skiing will always see young new blood. those rookies will steadily progress the sport like the current pros are doin today. the tricks will get more technical, and the pros will still maintain mad style. afterall, if they didnt, they wouldn't be pros

um, no we have definitey not reached that point, and we never will. i dont know what your talking about with skateboarding and bmx, there's tons of new names, and if you pay attention at all to the sport outside of the x games you'll know that dave mirra and tony hawk dont get that much coverage.

like every extreme sport, it will eventually stop progressing with new tricks, like it or not.
