Go Pro slow-mo help

Hi guize, I have another go pro question:

How do you create a good looking slow-mo (like in the usc edits) that looks good unlike final cut's shitty speed change program.

If anyone has a good technique or program, I would be thankful.

the usc team has started using Twixtor to do super slow motion.

you can also conform 60p footage to 24p using Cinema Tools, that will give you really nice slow motion at 40% of real time

is twixtor a video editing program or does it just convert in slo mo?

and does cinema tools export to quick time?


Also, left out some important info:
Mac user, shooting on r3 pretty much all the time.

Twixtor is a plugin for after effects and Final Cut Pro. It blends the frames together allowing you to slow down the footage while it still looks smooth.

not quite, you have the right idea though. what it actually does is guess, based on the frames you give it, what each frame would look like if the clip were, say, 1000fps instead of 60fps. that's why it stays sharp (whereas frame blending gets blurry), but also why it warps things like water if not done right.

to OP, as ReedSkis~ said, Twixtor is a plugin program for either AE or Final Cut Pro. cinema tools is also a sort of plugin. In Final Cut, you click on the clip, then select open in cinema tools. the clip will open in cinema tools, and that's where you conform it. you then go back to final cut, and the clip has been conformed without you having to actually export it or anything.

Sup buddiess.. if you are working with final cut, here is how you do the good smooth slow mo (not the epic fake slowmo from twixtor, that is just tricks)

I downloaded twixtor for FCE and it turns out I need to update my software to 4.0.1. anyone know how to do that?

Yea this is 100% correct. Somehow I got it in my head that it blended the frames together. I think I was confusing it with a slowmo option that Motion has which is placed right above optical flow (same thing as twixtor, built into motion).

If you have After Effects, import the clip and right click/controll click on it and select interpret footage and type in 30 fps instead of 60 and it will be half speed super smooth. And if you dont have after effects I'd recomend getting it, Its a Bugatti of a software, you should be able to find a torrent/key gen, I did

Thanks for the great info!

I used a similar process for this small clip.

We were very limited by time, weather, and daylight to capture this clip. Isn't as great as ABE's backflip but we'll give her another go this weekend.

Still turned out just okay though.

what program is that with?

and also, I have FCE 4.0 and can't find a twixtor download that plugs into 4.0 (current download requires 4.0.1).

Quick correction. The video was moved. Sorry for double post.

Methodology:
1. Take shot.
2. Convert using MPEG Streamclip
3. Import to After Effects as .MOV [quicktime h264]
4. Apply Twixtor as needed [much playing around is needed]
5. Color Correction / Adjustments
6. Profit.

I know this doesn't look as nice as Abe's but hopefully next week we'll get some better footage! Let me know what you think.

In the current edit I am making, I a slowing all the clips down to 90% (using imovie, haven't figured out how to use FC express yet :/) and the clips look amazing. It seems like every time I slowed them down to 50% the footage was all choppy and shaky. I have yet to read abek's thing on the gopro sight, will do soon.
