The fact of the matter is, a TON of people duck under the ropes to go ski some powder turns in the backcountry, they are ill un-equiped, un-experienced and don't know anything about avalanche danger. They just do it anyways.
Then there are those who know of avalanche danger and don't think it'll happen to them. After all, those people over there went.
I've almost been hit my an avalanche where some idiot traversed over my run while i was skiing. I saw it in time fortunately.
When my dad (who I was skiing with) confronted him it was the SAME OLD ANSWER! "I didn't know".
Well... That is what this thread is for. For people to understand the avalanche danger, brush up on their avalanche skills and to gain an awareness. It's NOT for people to go, "Oh I did an online course, I know what I'm doing now." but for them to know enough to think "Wait, I shouldn't go there. There's a huge risk."
I've mentioned it before. This is NOT a substitute to an AST 1 course.
Now, here are some video's of people getting trapped by avalanches. I know Dan Treadway in the first video, his brother Dave was skiing with his wife, a friend of his and his friend's wife on Mt Currie in Pemberton and his friend got hit by an avalanche and died. It's a real danger that people have to understand. That's what this thread is for.
If people are still unconvinced that avalanches are that dangerous. Here is an incident report database for Canada. You can see the number of fatal avalanches per year. That is just Canada alone! Imagine worldwide
