DIY Winches

Hey, wondering if anyone has any resources or experience in building a winch setup. I'm looking for something with enough power to tow into flatland jumps. Minnesota rep.

I used a bungee years ago, and always had a problem getting enough leverage with one person to get up to speed. Have they changed much since 2000?

only seen a gas powered winch once in a ski movie, cant remember which one.

ive seen a few videos of it and they sometimes have extra handles so that 3 people can pull it back

That kinda defeats the purpose. I'd just tow in with the car if that was the case.

Decided to just strike out and start building one. Picked up an 11 hp motor from Harbor Freight, going to start designing the frame and spool setup when I get the time. Any welders on here from the Twin Cities?

Ideas?

Suggestions?

Use wakeskating and wakeboarding forums for info, plans, and anything else. A few pointers I can throw in quickly:

for all parts

- Just make a spool from a metal wheel hub and some big cutting discs, don't buy any of the fancy custom made ones.

for line

- the Harbor Freight engines for great as a cheap alternative to the Briggs or other nice ones.

I saw this in a snowboard movie but dont remember the name but you can get an old 50cc motor cycle(one of the ones for little kids) and take off the rear wheel and attach a rope to the rim of the back wheel and prop the back wheel up with some sort of make shift stand. So when you start the bike and gas it the rear wheel spins which coils the rope up and propelling whatever is holding on to the rope. Probably easier then trying to weld one yourself and easier to get a hold of all the needed materials. Good Luck.

For skiing, you don't need nearly as much hp as the wakeboate/wakeboard guys. There is nothing wrong with more, but it will just be heavier, which can suck.

Ahhh, didn't mean for my last post to sound so dickish.

The 11hp was on sale, so I just couldn't say no. I am still considering exchanging it for the 6.5hp, because it seems like it's almost twice as heavy.

I'd go with the 6.5. And if it's cheaper than the on sale 11hp, use that money to buy a torque-a-verter. It'll be lighter, and will have a similar top speed.

Thanks for all the advice guys. The 6.5 is the same price as the 11 cause it's not on sale. The 11 was a restock, but I'm going to exchange it because I can't see lugging it around with all the additional weight that will be added by the TC, frame, spool and rope.
