You have to know the story of how England has arbitrarily just doubled tuition for students, despite no clear evidence why, and with no great increase in quality of teaching or amenities. I'd riot, too. Good on them for standing up to the school systems.
TREBLED in some cases!! was 3.2 grand (in pounds per year), in 2012 its gonna go up to 6 grand, but some courses will be 9 grand (im guessing lab ie science courses). Funny though, cos in the US, colleges are way more expensive. Id be pissed too though 3.2 to 9 is a big leap
the whole process has been completely stupid by all involved. The tuition increases have no reason for existing, but the students protesting were equally stupid. How much respect do you think you're going to get when literally every protest of yours erupts into a riot almost immediately? They didn't even last 15 minutes as a peaceful protest yesterday. Ridiculous.
there are also huge program cuts. It's a bit like the govt saying "unless you're studying science, we don't need you."
speaking of which, I'm only here on a study abroad program, so I need some help from any english uni students. I got a 67 on an essay, and I'm not entirely sure if thats good or bad. I just know the grading works differently here.
These riots were really damaging to the movement, students lost a lot of the sympathy we had after this minority behaved like fucking idiots.
Just so you know, the tuition raise was passed by 20 votes around 2 days ago.
Oh and in terms of education standards rising and stuff, i think I might clarify how these tuition rises work. Basically, government subsidizes tuition fee's largely in the Uk, all these cuts are doing are removing some of that subsidy. Therefore the university has to raise fee's in order to make up the difference, in the end they aren't recieving any more money, the Government is just saving money.
Hopefully that makes sense, I can never get my point across on the internet.
at least police officers here got to give rioters a good ol' fashioned beatdown with a club. In the US they get those paintball-like guns, but over here its more hands-on beating. Must be more satisfying.
A lot of my friends went yesterday, apparently it was a load of anarchists and right wing thugs causing a lot of the violence. To be far i can't be bothered with it all as i should finish uni by the time the rises actually come into force. However the government have really fucked shit up this time, less than 10 years ago all of university tuition was free in england! I'm pretty angry about it all!
I'm just happy I don't plan on going to University at all, however, scottish people are still getting free HE education, yet England is making it harder to be able to afford it.
All the scottish universities are going to have rediculous waiting lists, and everyone in England is going to be a jobless person, draining money with the dole.
Good old world this is, eh?
thats why police forces they still have them. perfect for crowd control. Line them up and walk towards the crowd, and they can pretty much control exactly where they move. Surprisingly, bicycles are also fairly effective at this somehow.
From £3,000 to £9,000. It may not sound like alot in comparison to US fees, but don't forget that we do not have a bursary system like the US, and £9,000 is roughly 50% of the average yearly wage
if you want a DECENT job, you go to college. If you want a GREAT job, you don't need college. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and many other smart people didn't graduate from college. All you need to succeed is a good mind and a good idea.
lol horrible examples... bill gates dropped out of harvard after spending time with genius computer scientists and steve jobs, who also dropped out, said if he never went to college at all the mac would never have existed.
But they didn't get their jobs because of a degree, which is what what's his face up there was insinuating. They were smart, and they knew what they wanted to do. They took and exploited a niche that Xerox was too fucking stupid to cash in on even though they were sitting on all the basic tech.
I was at a riot in Athens Greece a few years ago for the same deal...I was like 13, shitting bricks cause it was scary cause I didn't want to get tear gased
