Can I Get Smoother Slo Mo?

I've been messing around with Slo Mo lately and I think I've come up with a pretty good method. I edit with Sony Vegas 9 Pro and shoot w/ an HV30 in 2000 fps in Normal HDV 1080 mode.

Let me know how this could get better.

If you rock FCP you can use Twixtor for smooth slow mo. I am not sure about Vegas though.

ya, that's twixtor in AE. I don't see myself switching anytime soon. i just got used to vegas, don't wanna change anytime soon. but sweet video man. +k

you should be able to slow it down to at least 24p and hve it still be smooth

Doing slow motion with 60i can be treacherous because it cuts your resolution in half (from a framerate that already technically half resolution). However, beggers can't be choosers, so here is how I did it:

1. Shoot 60i at 1/300. This shutter looks the most natural.
2. Use Time Stretch effect in After Effects. Slow it to 200%.
3. Export!

These are the same settings I used for the slow motion in this video, which was filmed on a DV camera:

yaa i know. I was originally planning on giving both the specs, but then obviously mashed them together in my daze... but now that that's cleared up, any last suggestions? For those saying do certain things in AE, i don't have the program and probably wont be switching anytime soon, but i guess if you can get overall better editing quality, it may be worth a shot... hmm...

After Effects isn't an NLE (non-linear editing) program like Premiere or Final Cut Pro. It's a VFX compositing program. You edit everything shot by the clip...

Having the shutter speed at 1/2000 wont make the slow mo any smoother it will only make each frame less blurred. Instead of dropping it all the way to 1/2000 you should use 180 degree rule. Basically whatever your frame rate is, for you 60fps the shutter speed would need to be 1/120 th of a second for the most natural "film" look. Any slower the frames will be blurred together and any faster you will get that choppy look. Also I am not sure if it relates to the editing software you are using but in final cut pro if you shoot in 60i and slow it down in final cut it looks horrible. Instead you have to use cinema tools which comes with final cut studio, to get the best results. I am not sure if that applies to you but you could always download just cinema tools. Hope that helps.

1/120 looks amazing for 30p, but for 60f it is not optimal. 1/300 does a much better job at mimicking the 180 degree shutter if you're using 60i to achieve 60f.

Its a special effects program not really for cutting and splicing clips its good for things like title or any other crazy thing you want to do

All you do is clips at a time and export to a movie file and then put that in your editing program.

So I've been looking into trying After Effects but I don't have a 64 bit system (cs5) so I really wanna find a place to download the trial version of cs4, but have come to no avail. Help anyone>?
