Edges + Rails = ???

So yesterday I skied for the first time at Sunday River on my new AR7's, I skied just regular terrain for the entire day, and then around 1:30pm, we were told about a small set up with some jibs. Of course we went to go check them out, and they were not big at all, maybe 1 down rail, a flat rail and 2 boxes, nothing special.

So I attempt to hit the down rail first. I hop on, and slide it but get caught up and end up falling forward. So I get up, gather my poles and stuff, and move on, no big deal. Next was a flat rail, it was maybe 2 feet off the round if not less. Now I've progressed in rails for 3 years now, not saying I'm really good or anything but I can do basic tricks, like 270 out both ways, some switch up's, maybe a k fed if I'm lucky. So I'm not even thinking about hitting this rail its just a natural reaction. But as soon as I get both my skis on the rail, my skis did not move and my upper body flew forward, smashing my shoulder into the rail, It hurt like a motha fucka.

Two of my friends were with me and saw it happen, they said I didn't do anything wrong or strange, so I'm just wondering why this could have happened. Maybe the edges on my brand new skis, or something, I really don't know....

u have fresh new edges so your going to want to detune your edges so u dont catch on rails. you probably were not doing anything wrong just take a file to dull your edges and youll be golden

new skis = sharp edges. I never bothered to detune mine I just let it happen naturally. I'm thinking if yo happened to lean a bit lower and maybe a bit back your not going to get caught. It might be a little bumpy but you're gonna slide.

I've been skiing mount snow for the past two weeks and something like this has been happening to me also i never really fell but had a few close calls. it seems to happen on certain rails most of them i'm fine on. i am a decent rail slider not the best out there but i can hold my own for sure. so i thought hey maybe its because i haven't waxed my skis since i bought them so i went and got them waxed that week, went back last weekend it seemed to help a little but still ended up sticking to a couple rails i have no edges what so ever and i was wondering what the problem was. i ended up avoiding those rails i stuck to because i almost flew forward every time i hit them which sucks cause they were some of the better rails. also on other rails my skis seemed to slide super super fast. idk what it is so im interested in knowing as well.

This, but be careful if you take the easy route, you can get burs on the edges of your skis that can be hard as shit to grind out once you establish them. Just take a nice file and round out the edges while you're already in the process of waxing your skis.

I had issues like this too when I first started skiing park.

Make sure your edges are dull. If you have new skis, rails will be a bitch for a while. You can either tough it out and do more rails and dull the edges that way, or take a metal file to your underfoot edge.

Or, if its warm(ish), the rails might be a little softer since they are warmer, and you might be sticking for that reason.

Sometimes it just happens on certain rails though. Maybe the park crew hasn't waxed or greased the rails in a long time. At my hill they wax/grease them, but I don't know about other places.

We just paint all of our rails every fall.  Seems to work pretty well and we've never had to use wax or grease of any kind.  In fact we have some of the smoothest rails I've ever hit.

I wouldn't use a file. It can trash up your edges. Get a gummy stone and detune a little bit underfoot, where you would be sliding the rail. This help prevent catching and edge cracks.

Seriously though, use an angle grinder. It gives you way more control than a file or sandpaper and its faster too

just make sure you don't cut all the way through and use safety glasses.

that is why they recommend you use gummy stones...


its not even good to use a file on your edges.

gummy stones are good for the tip and tail detune but for rails you want a duller edge underfoot and it would take a really long time with a gummy stone because of how soft they are. its almost like chewing gum, hence the name

If the rails are new and not a lot of people have hit them, they're probably just sticky because of the rust. Get a chunk of ice and rub it along the rail like you would with wax. And detune your skis.

lol @ eheath and the consequent hate ...

i've never detuned new skis and i don't have problems with catching an edge, i just let em wear out naturally, but maybe your edges were a bit sharper or you land too hard (gently touching down on the rail instead of banging it like a hammer also makes quite a difference)

so i haven't seen you ski, but keep that in mind and detune em, just run a rock along the edge to break it in ....

keep doin flat bars and ROUND bars until your edges are less sharp, then you can slide with ease.

dont use a metal file, itll mess your edges up too much. go to a shop and get a gummy stone (i think thats what its called). itll file off the sharpness gently without ruinin your edge
