Paying for college out of state

hello ns, its getting to be that time where i have to decide what college i want to attend. the only problem is i have to pay for it all by myself. i am from wisconsin and i am trying to go to utah for college. its doesnt have to be the u but somewhere where there are fucking mountais. Does anybody have any advice on an easy way to get in-state tuition or how long it takes to get in- state tuition? any ideas would help me alot! thanks +k

Depends on the state. Usually you have to have a permanent address in that state for 6-12 months to be considered an instate resident.

Take a year off from school, work at park city, or mountain of your choice for the season, live in an apartment, apply to school as in state.

utah sounds like the place for you. At the U, tuition is pretty cheap and it's very easy to become a resident, where tuition is like 8 K a year including room & board. Westminster is a lot smaller, but if you like that they do offer schollarships simply on grades, yet it's still more expensive than the U. The community college is also a good option, extremely cheap. If you're paying I would move to utaho, go to the JC for two years and ski a bunch, work a little too, and then third year go to the U and it would still be pretty cheap.

Research what it takes to become a resident.  I go to school at UW in Washington, and it's a pain in the ass to become a resident while you're a student.  I'm not discouraging you, I think you should definitely do it, but sniff around and look at exactly what you need to do to become a resident.  Sometimes you have to have an exact address and work X number of hours a week, and so on and so forth.  For Utah snow I think it would be worth it.

Utah is easy to get residency. I did this a couple years ago. Basically all they care about is that you are in the state for a year. You can prove that from bills or bank account history, school history etc. the easiest (what i did) is use the schooling to prove you were there during school then if you get a job just get a note from our employer saying you worked in utah.
If you didn't want to take a year off, you could go to Salt Lake Community College for a year then transfer to the U once you are a resident.

I am also from wisconsin, and im looking at montana state for next year. the parks wont be great but the schools alright for engineering and its decently cheap depending on your act/sat score

dont really know. Just happened to go to the meeting when the msu lady came to my school and ive liked it ever since. I guess its just location mainly and price. I wouldnt really like slc that much i dont think? If you think otherwise let me know though cuz im still looking hard. Mechanical engineering will be my major btw.

yeah for sure man.. well to start a main reason that the U is getting into the Pac-12 is because of their achedemics, largely engineering and medicine.. so youre good there. Second you obviously cant really beat the skiing, and since a ton of kids at the U are skiers you will notice real quickly that there is a much larger population of skiers than there are mormons. Everyone is active weather it is skiing, longboarding, hiking, climbing, whatever. Third SLC is actually pretty sick, ton of shows coming through all the time and there is plenty of partying to be had. The mormons wont bother you at all, and really theyre a good thing and keep the city nice.. ive loved it out here so far

ya, i have relatives out there so i know what the city is like, but thats the thing its a freaking city. i guess it wont matter much what its like in summer but whats the spring and fall like? i mean, its like a dust bowl isnt it?

heres the thing, yes its a city.. but its a city surrounded by INSANE mountains and tons of canyons.. and outside of all of that theres bryce and other amazing outdoors around. I feel like when you want the city, you have the city. When you want the outdoor chill feeling you have it. I know for like the first 2 months of school i went on tons of hikes in the hills behind campus and it was amazing

Be sure to visit the college town before you decide to go there.

I was in the same boat as you. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to MSU or U of U and I visited both schools and both campuses and for some reason I loved the MSU campus and really didn't like U of U's campus for some reason. It is all personal preference. They are both awesome colleges with awesome people in an awesome location and both are pretty legit engineering colleges.

PM me if you have any questions about MSU. I am a bio/chem engineering major now but have taken two ME classes. Also Pat_in_the_hat on NS is a mechanical engineering major here at MSU so he should be able to answer some questions more specific to that particular major.

If you're under 22 you can't just live somewhere for 6-12 months and then get instate tuition. The reason they even offer in state tuition is because residents there pay taxes (usually your parents) for years and years. They aren't going to give some college age kid instate tuition because he skied there for a year.

In CO, if you're under 22, you need to have your parents pay taxes and become a resident in state for at least a year as well.

If you want cheap out of state tuition, CC is the best option

At the U you can get in-state tuition after one year of going to school here like others have stated.  As others have stated as well, you just need to have a Utah drivers license and register to vote.  You also can not be claimed as a dependent on your parent's tax return.  It's extremely simple.  I don't know of anyone who was not able to get it after their first year of school.  I didn't live here over the summer between my freshman and sophomore year and was still able to get in-state my sophomore year.  The U is pretty cheap out of state for the first year as well.  I'm in my fourth year of ME at the U and have loved it thus far.  I'm sure MSU would be fun as well depending on what you are looking for in a college environment.

Sounds to me like you were talking about no state in particular.
