Windows vs Mac?

I know there is probably hundreds of threads about this but i need some help so i wana invest in a new laptop. At the moment i have a Toshiba satellite from like 6years ago.
I do a lot of filming in hd but cant edit on this shit because it always crash's.
I was thinking of waiting till summer to get a mac book so they bring out the new mac books with the lion software so i can get the old ones cheaper and i was just guna get a mac book with a higher ram and bigger memory than a mac book pro then torrent the Lion software later if i need it. But I'm not really too sure. Like some people swear by Apple and some people swear by Windows. Like i have my fair share of use with apple but its always been brand new. So they've always been fast. But then my mum got a windows 7 last year and hers is still hella fast.
I want to have adobe photoshop after effects and depending on the system final cut pro or premiere elements pro.
One of the reason why im reasoning with mac book is because it looks so much cleaner. But still trying to sus this out.
Im willing to pay up to 1500 maybe a little more but not much more.
Any suggestions?

Incorrect did my research Mac are actually a con to video editing if your not professional. If your professional and have 7g's handy then sure macbook is up but i think im guna go for a vaio with a 1t hdd with 7500rpm and 8g ram

I might can help some, just switched in the past 2 weeks from pc to mac. I will say I don't edit any on my computer, minimal video/picture editing, more of a basic school computer for me.  My budget was around $1300.  In June I bought a 13" Vaio VPCS from best buy with the I5, 8gb ram, 500gb hd and loved it.  Only had minor issues with screen and keyboard cover coming up.  A couple weeks ago my cat knocked it off the counter and it imploded.  Thanks to my parents insurance, they bought me a new 13" macbook pro, 2.4ghz, core 2, 250hd, 4gb ram.  At first I was skeptical about "downgrading" in components to the mac, but it has been amazing!  Given that I have half the ram of the Vaio and an older/slower processor this thing won't freeze like the Vaio did with multiple windows open.  Also when I bought it, I looked online into upgrading the ram and hd for a ssd and doubling the ram.  It is insanely cheaper to do this yourself over paying for it from mac.  The SSD was 115 and the ram was about the same so instead of paying mac, you can buy the stuff online and do it yourself for 250ish and have a top of the line mbp.  The apps/widgets/misc gadgets available to dl for free online is insane.   More +'s for me have been the protective case and stronger design, and the battery is life is easily double the vaios.

Yeah well I thought they were fast too but I was talking to my bud who has had his for about 6months and has semi looked after it done a lot of editing but he doesn't have a external harddrive so all his shit is saved on it and his is extremely slow. The only think that really doesn't catch my eye with the Apple is the screen is only 13in in my price bracket. Any one think that they're guna get cheaper when the new software comes out?

If you're going to be video editing and you're on a budget, build your own computer and save yourself a ton of money.

Just upgraded to an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (6-core) and put in 4GB of DDR3 DIMM for $300. Already had an NVIDIA 8600GT and a 1TB Fujitsu HDD (those go for less than $100 these days), plus 450GB for backups.

A comparatively spec'd Mac is going to be at least 50% more expensive, maybe even double the price depending on what kind of deals you can get on Newegg.

Not starting to try an argument, but what do you mean by this? A Mac uses the same internal materials as a PC (they're both computers), so why would one last longer than the other? I get that a new Macbook Pro is going to last longer than a shit Dell because the Macbook is better-built and more reliable, but it all comes down to the components and how you treat the thing, not the logo on the top. My father has computers sitting in his basement from over a decade ago running Linux almost non-stop, and you're going to tell me they didn't last?

Hackintosh.

I was all about getting a Mac for school. Found a bunch on Craigslist that were sold before I could get to them. after many failed attempts I gave up and paid spend the money that would have gone to the cute little apple on the front to building up a PC. So far, I really have no complaints yet. I got an HP Pavilion dv6. Core i7 processor, 6gb RAM, 500gb 7200 RPM hard drive. ATI radeon graphics card with 1GB dedicated memory. Backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner (don't really use it, but I had to get it to get the backlit keyboard. $40 extra I think). 15.6" screen, two batteries (standard 6 cell and oversized 9 cell) all for just under $1200.

I have the entire CS5 Master Collection installed as well as Autodesk Revit and Inventor. It runs everything flawlessly.

If the Mac OS had a platform which supported engineering software, I definitely would have ran a hackintosh.

i have had a macbook for almost 4 years now, and i have never had a problem with it. i love how easy and strait forward it is to use, and once you get used to how it works it is so much easier. i dont do much editing or anything like that, although i like to do alot with photos and the basic photo software doesnt do much. i wish i could put my pc photoshop program on my mac but whatever. also you cant play jibbin, which is probably the biggest problem i have with my mac, other than that i love it

This is still confusing i have a windows and its 5-6years old aand its got a few flaws but it still works. I think i will probably go for a sony vaio possibly a mac and ill look into hackintosh

Windows - will save you money, but be a general pain in the ass, especially if your job is working on the computer.

Linux - will save you money, be more reliable, but requires some IT skills and a certain level of tinkering to get it working to its full potential

Mac more expensive, but the time and frustration saved with the superior UI make it worth it, especially if its your tool for work. More reliable than windows and easier to set up than linux.

And to whoever said Mac is Linux, you are not completely correct. Linux is a rewritten clone of the UNIX system. UNIX is the basis of mac OSX and a few other operating systems you all probably haven't heard of. Linux is the basis of many open source operating systems like Ubuntu and Redhat. So "osx runs on a framework similar to Linux" is the more accurate phrase. They both still have better stability than Windows though, so your point stands.

I've been brainwashed by Apple's marketing department too. What a coincidence. Fucking hipster retards that don't understand you can do anything with any computer if you install a few programs that do it. An operating system doesn't make it any more multimedia than another one. Puppy linux could be multimedia as well if you really wanted it too for christs sake.

Ubuntu is nice but I would personally suggest Linux Mint. Its based on Ubuntu but in my opinion is more pleasing to the eye. Not only that, but they both run off the same package depository where you can get probably 1000s of open source programs. I dual boot Windows 7 and Mint to make sure I have compatibility with programs I need for school (eg. Visual Studio)

nah, I work doing web development and graphic design on my computer. I was able to make the money back for my mac quick enough that it was worth it to get a mac. The mac GUI has been invaluable to my workflow and productivity, but if I chose another line of work I would probably spend the time tinkering with Linux to use for a personal home computer.

And to the one above, mac gets the multimedia rep because that is what the whole GUI is geared towards. A good GUI can speed up how fast you make money when you have 9 programs and 40 documents open (not at all an exaggeration or my computer on a normal work day). I would guess and say I probably save 5-10 minutes on the hour compared to my workflow on a windows system, with a full time job, do the math, it is worth it to some people, but not so much hipsters.

Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE the Mac OS.  I've used it quite a bit and there are things I do like about it.  However, the image Apple is trying to portray and the hipster attitude that is going around these days is what kills it for me.  On that note, I also firmly believe that Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft has released in quite awhile, if ever. 

Linux is pretty sweet as well, but the one obvious downside is the lack of compatibility for some programs, although generally there are some good open source versions of most things.

It really comes down to what you're used to, and what you feel more familiar with. Some people work faster in Windows, and some faster in OSX.
