This was originally intended to be an addition to the original thread by SkiPimp, but I think I went on long enough for it to be its own and I think it's worth a read anyways.
I think Ski Pimp's post is intended for the type of people who's entire wardrobe is made up of Abercrombie, shit like that. People don't need to spend $35 on a t-shirt that 10 other people at your school already have, and they buy it simply because Abercrombie is the cool thing to wear. People who think they're too good for generic things that accomplish the exact same thing as their expensive and overpriced counterparts. People who need a $4 latte' every morning (or bi-daily for some). People who think they need text messaging on their cell phone. People who's lives solely revolve around materialism. Ski pimp is right, there is so much more to life than that. I'm not judgmental towards people who do, but I feel so bad for those who will go to college to get a degree in order to obtain a job they will despise for 40+ years that has no real benefit on anyone's life (hasn't anyone seen office space?) simply so they can eventually afford to buy an Escalade, maybe a Porsche, and a ginormous house for their family of 3. Those of you in college or planning on going, really think about that when you're deciding what you want to major in... what is it that you want out of life? What's important to you? What exactly will you be working for during the next 40 years? Is it meaningful? I mean if aquiring as many possessions and toys is seriously what brings you the most satisfaction in life, terrific for you. But I assure you will eventually feel unfulfilled. All of that is temporary. Sure it brings satisfaction, but you will eventually want more..There will always be something missing..thats the way it works, you'll get something and a couple days later its obselete (sp?)..I am currently going for a degree in education, fully aware that teachers salaries are rather low, but 100% content with the fact that I'll be doing something I consider worthwhile. I'm perfectly fine with driving a used car. I wouldnt mind living in a 1 story house if I had a small family. Just really think about what you live your life for guys, all i ask is to consider whats important to you, what it is you work for. In my opinion, you are missing out if you let your life revolve around temporary materialistic satisfaction. Live and work for whats important to you.

okay i'll pose a question. what is your stance on side dish materialism? i myself am a materialist, not to a ridiculous degree, but i can and will openly admit that i care about material items. that being said, i consider my other interests (non materialistic ones) to be of far greater value and significance to who i am. so if i am a materialist, but would far more likely title myself as someone who is multifaceted, layered, complex, worthwhile and valued - am i still worthy of criticism? essentially i am asking, if you're condemning materialism (in a material world), then do you condemn a materialist no matter their additional qualities and interests?

Definitely not. I'm especially disagreeing with people who are extreme materialists...Sophomores in high school who do bad in school because they're working so much to support their outrageous payment on their brand new car...People who will place materialistic pleasure at the top of their list of favorite things. Generally, people who devote the majority of their time to satisfy their materialistic desires. Hell, everyone on this site is materialistic in at least one way, we all ski and ski equipment couldnt be more expensive, but thats for something that is meaningful, satisfying a hobby that provides exercise and adventure. I'm just worried about the people who think the more stuff they can get the less problems in life they'll have. It's sad but its so common.

Being a teacher is one of the most noble professions.
what better contribution that to teach our next generation?
i like things.
I especially like things that allow for greater pleasure in life, such as a nice mountain bike or sporting equipment...
actually, thats all i really spend my money on.
outdoor gear and good food.
I don't want everybody to be like me, I want to pick and choose. The rest need to live like the herd.
They need the herd.
We all do.
But I don't need to support the herd's ideas just because Society is judging me.
Judge away, I am free, and you can kiss my ass.
(directed not to an individual, but a mass illusion of individuals)
People need to think this way.
When I was born, I had all my choices made for me....As I got older, I had people everywhere making choices for me. What I should wear, what I should eat, what I should do.
Im done with that. My time to choose is now.
if I want a piece of land to live on, Who the fuck is the gov't to deny me? I choose a different life.
Why should the gov't own land they've never seen? never done anything with?
oh, because they wiped out entier nations of natives, they earned the right.
Fuckers.
Im taking my power back, the power to choose my life.

I agree with Bhayter10. He's got it figured out- the materialistic shit will not satisfy you in the long run. For the longest time, I wanted to get a high paying job that would allow me loads of posessions and a big house, etc. I realized a few years ago that all of that was unnecessary. I'm in college now, and I'm majoring in English. Everyone asks me why I chose English, and I chose it becuase it will allow me the skills and mindset to discover what is satisfying in the world. Will I be a writer or a teacher? Maybe. Will I make lots of money? No. Will I be happy? Yes. Figure out what you REALLY want for yourself. Just like skipimp, I'm finished with letting other people decide what I should deem worthwhile.

yes materialism is no good... and if you look at it most of the kids growing up that are affected by it the worst are the ones that grew up with it... its almost a family trait. and almost no one can say that they dont have it a bit... as long as its not me affected by it.. ill let the little punks live however they want too.. the one thing that pisses me off is when it breaks into my world of skiing.. i hate seeing little bitches wearing brand new burton gear.. with some brand new stick(s).. and sporting the newest Cannon Digital Video Recorder.. when those fucks get in my way and fuck up my line.. ill fuckin pole em to the back of the head. Ehhhh.. sorry sort of went of on that shit... anyways.. i buy some abercrombie shit because its quality... im wearing shorts i baught in junior high.. freshman in college now.. thats quality.. but if its all you wear.. please reconsider your life... also im doing somthing i love in college.. LIFE IS GOOD!

Personally I see nothing wrong with wanting new ski gear, that's supporting that's fun, good exercise, and something that satisfies the passion that we all love so much, it's different than some young kid driving a brand new car or somethin. And as for Abercrombie, I agree with you...personally I only own one article of clothing from there (and it is quality) that i bought back when I was more materialistic..I'm not going to throw it away because I don't support people who buy too much stuff there. It's all about your priorities..if you're buying clothes you really shouldnt spend your money on simply to please people, re-evaluate yourself. I suppose if you're really into cars or racing or somethin, like really passionate about it, then go ahead and spend your money on them. You're in trouble when you're buying things for yourself solely to please others.

Unless you're buying those things for others, to please them.
i love that. When i go shopping, i buy one thing for myself and 20 things for my friends..
and when i don't have money, I plan trips and adventures, organize it, motivate, and offer other services..and in return my friends drive and buy the beer.
it's a great system
I don't even know what abercrombie is..
ive never seen american idol...
I can't remember the last time i bought clothes..
Oh, well, here in china i bought a wardrobe from the shangai market, all cheap fake shit (but surprisingly close to the real thing) columbia, quicksilver etc..
a whole wardrobe x 4 (4 days clothes) was 100$
im set for the next 5 years!
haha

Buying new gear isn't wrong. I buy new stuff when I need it, whether it be for skiing, climbing, or just clothes for wearing in everyday life. Buying excessive shit is unnecessary though, and that's what the point is here. The next time you see something that you think you 'need,' reconsider it. The more worthless shit you leave in the stores the better off you'll be.

b-wald.
what in that quote inclined you to think that i thought i was better?
because i want to pick and choose my friends?
because i don't want everyone to be like me?
That i think being like me is the best?
oh wait, i didn't say that last one..
Did you read the next line?
the herd is just the majority.
it is our country's foundation, democracy. Of course you need it. We all do.
the herd has given us our way of life.
do you enjoy it? thank the herd.
I am just trying to say that my time with the herd is over, now limited to nessesity.
ironically, that necessity created and controlled by the herd....
our food supply, our water supply, or concept of reproduction, our shelter......coincidentally all our basic needs to live.
psst...it's not really a coincidence..
I just thought id share..
and if you're getting all wound up and upset....im just sitting here laughing at your frustruation..
