I am no colorado-ian? but I would be so fucking pissed if this happened nation wide. Enough to make me change mountains I skied at. I'm not sure of the legality behind it, but still that sucks.

Here's the thing, they're not searching anyone. The only searches they have is on April Fools day very year. Not mention that's only backpacks.

Ah did not catch that. I guess I'm for it then, especially if it cuts down on theft. Enforcement riding lifts and monitoring skiers as they ride down seems to be a bit drastic, but I feel a resort like Steamboat is trying to uphold some prestige or reputation. They are generally a nicer ski area, they are going to be attracting the older folks so this is more of a business move.

Texans and other gapers cam come here for a ski trip and easily spend 10k+ because they are idiots.

That's the only way I see 10 grand being the total price. Most people I talk to on the gondi say they're here for the week, skiing only for 3 days and are staying at the Hilton.

I don't know about the rest of you, but in Canada there's been cops on the ski hill for most of my life. I've even seen a cop take out a guy who tried to steal a purse or something at the day lodge once. Entertaining, to say the least.

One thing I find odd though is, in the article it said that the cops are there mostly to look out for booze, and drunk people. I've never really understood how they (the cops AND the ski industry) can get away with such things while at the same time having a bar on top of the mountain. They'll put on the skiers code of conduct that you can't ski and drink, check your bags for booze (and ski the hill looking out for drunk people), but advertise beer all over the place and feed you beer in a location where there's no option but to ski away from the bar. I had a friend who asked a question about this at his orientation for food and beverage at Whistler one year. The supervisor lady he asked brushed the question off and changed the subject.

What the? I was at Steamboat all last season, and never saw the police on the slopes at all.
This article makes Steamboat sound like a horrible place when it is amazing.
I don't understand what they're trying to achieve with this article.

Well, it's because a few years back there were some assaults on tourists from a few individuals dressed up for gaper day. It got pretty bad. I heard one story where a college kid literally beat a Texan with a ski pole and the guy received some broken bones. So that's the main reason why cops show up on April Fools day.
