Drive up to PC from SLC

Sup

Going to be up in PC for Sundance and wondered what the drive up was like - i know it's short, but im going to be renting a car, so i don't want to pay for an AWD SUV if it's not necessary.... do they keep the roads in relatively good nick when it's snowing?

the streets get plowed and salted every morning after a storm, so they are never really awful. That said, there will still definitely be enough snow that you can get fucked up if you aren't paying attention, plus the black ice in parley's tends to stick around for at least a couple days after as well. I don't think you would need a SUV, but i think AWD would be necessary if there's a good storm coming through.

Thanks bro...

I'm used to driving from Denver to Breck etc on i70, and in a storm, that can become a bit of a shit show getting over loveland and down the other side....

Im not anticipating i80 being as bad....

Also - i've never been to Utah before - im arriving on the thursday night, but staying down in SLC for a couple of days (shredding in the day, driving back in the eve).... then have a hook up in PC for Sat thru tues for Sundance etc.... what's the parking like in PC for those days when i head up shredding?

Thanks for the help dude. Plus any good nightspots to recommend in downtown SLC?

The parking during Sundance is a straight up mess. You have to get to the resort early or you flat out won't be able to park. One day last year during Sundance, I got there at like 11, and drove around the parking lot for an hour, then tried to pay to park underground, which was full, then tried to go park anywhere else, and I think I ended up parking in one of those parking garages on mainstreet in down town PC, then walking to town lift.

I think they might have a shuttle where you can park at the high school that I didn't know about, but that's still way annoying.

Moral of the story, get there early during Sundance.

parking at the resorts isn't usually a problem, b/c everyone is in town to go to the movies. However the traffic is just awful for much of the day, so getting around earlier in the day should definitely cut down on waiting time.

as for night spots, PC will be open for night skiing at that point with 3 kings lit up. There are urban spots pretty much everywhere in SLC, but the only one I really know is the Rail Gardens, although i have no idea where they are. There should be a few threads on them that have directions.

Thanks - yeah i figured this .... it's only for the Friday though really.... we have a house rented in the middle of PC for the rest, so i should have parking there - it's just because accomodation before the house is retarded, so we're gonna stay down in SLC off 80 for a couple of nights first...

ha.

PC should be heaving, and we have some pretty exclusive event passes... long story..... but for the friday, I wouldn't mind checking out SLC....

best advice? dont ski PC during sundance. when i lived in utah the best thing to do is to avoid PC for skiing during that shit show. it is always slammed and parking is a total bitch. i would ski elsewhere during then and hang out in park city for the nightlife stuff. even in high school when my best friend was living at the base of the canyons i avoided skiing up there, just to much of a shit show plus there are a FUCK TON of gapers. i mean, take your worst nightmare of total chodes on skis and apply it to PC during sundance. always made me want to punch a baby.

but hanging out on main and going to wasatch brew at the top of main and the other bars was always fun. definitely plenty of stuff to do during sundance.

fwd is fine, it wont be anything near what you've probably encountered in 70.

I think skiing/hanging out in PC during sundance is awesome! People watching while skiing... that's the ultimate.

oh and as far as traveling up parleys, if you can get a car/suv with awd i would. during storms it can get hairy going up and down and the way the shadows in the canyon work there is always a risk of black ice. plus all the semi's going up and down, i think its just smart to have an suv and not risk it. they do a good job of keeping the canyon plowed, but if there is a decent storm it can be hard to keep up with the falling snow. i'd rather be safe than sorry.

lol, speaking of parley's travel, same friend who lives at the base of the canyons used to drive a POS buick up and down parleys. that thing was such a beater, i have no idea how he didnt get in an accident. one time he got stuck though and had no cell service in the canyon, so i get a call from the cops to go pick his ass up, freaking ridiculous.

what's Parleys?

Thanks for the info guys.... yeah i am totally expecting a gaper fest... :-( im going to meet friends who have a mad hook up (like A List shit), and they're gonna be shit skiiers... but for me, it's pretty much a free trip to Utah, so im down... p

If PC is rammed, is it better to just go ride at Deer or canyons etc? Sorry - im a total Utah noob...

parleys canyon, its the canyon I-80 goes through from salt lake up to park city.

i would avoid deer valley at all costs, f'ing WAY expensive and will have 10x the number of rich gaper ass douche bags. the canyons, if you are adamant about skiing up in that area, will be the best of the three. the first couple days you are in utah i would at least ski up one of the other canyons, either at brighton/solitude or at alta/snowbird. those places are far less packed, especially brighton and solitude. you'll also probably get better snow at any of those places than at any of the park city area resorts.

Park City is empty during sundance...The town is busy and the bars suck...covers like woah, but the mountain is empty, not much busier than any other time...Its a real good time to ride park. And if you got a-list friends then it sounds like your going to have a banger time up here.

Yeah im gonna stay down in SLC for first two nights, so it would be closer (mileage wise anyway?) to hit up brighton and maybe alta- bird.... brighton looks pretty sweet though.

How's the season been so far? Over in CO they have been shit on....

the snow has been pretty decent. not too icy, but still pretty firm. i think we already have a 50-60" base at PC, and most of the mountain is already open (i think only 2 lifts are closed as of today).
