I mean, Autism is a broad term, but there is definitely something different about a higher percentage of children these days.

no need to be arrogant, but there's also a running problem of mds diagnosing instead psychologists(you can often get meds without a psych evaluation from your doc or clinic), and much like the whole adhd argument about kids just being kids, and parents being retarded. i don't know. i know i dont know a whole lot on autism, but i've never seen it portrayed like this. i'm just worried it's just going back to parents not doing their jobs and having the wrong person assess these kids. i also fee like modern medicine is excusing things and kind of making everything a disorder or disease and it's just not a positive terminology to me. you know, and if anybody who knows more about it, wants to explain it to me like an adult, then fine we'll have the discussion and i'll admit defeat, but i'm not going on a war here. i'll just ask a psychologist what they think instead.

my mom was telling me one of her schools(she works for a board) is 90% autistic students, and that's just boggling and hard to believe, obvioulsy, because it used to be like 1/1000 people get it or less? and you always see it portrayed as the kid who can't talk and shows no emotions and doesn't like being touched.... as opposed to the one kid my mom told me about at her school who just screams until someone hugs him, but the kid knows flat out what he's doing. he just sounds like a shithead to me. maybe that's the problem. is it wrong to assume kids who aren't raised a certain way will act out throughough their childhood? do strange things? i don't know. i wasn't social as a kid, and i do certain things semi ocd, does that mean i'm austistic? no..

 I'm glad someone brought this up, most people don't know what Autism is. I used to work for Disney and if I ever make it back there, I want to work for Disney to work with familys who have autistic children because it can get bad standing in line for ever.

 I would love to work with autistic children once I get older no matter what. My old roomates brother was autistic and I see how she and her family have struggled but got thru it. And a lot of the times people just don't understand autism because there are almost different levels of it.

 I suggest that anyone who doesn't know what it is, look it up because I have friends who are my age that are autistic and living life.

There is a difference between kids being overdiagnosed with adhd and autism. Autism is much more of a full mental disorder, unlike ADHD which far less debilitating.

You say you feel like the wrong people are diagnosing kids, or it is modern medicines fault, but those are very cliched arguments. Do you have any evidence for this? Most cases of autism are diagnosed by multiple doctors, not just one, and people often get a second opinion. While there is a trend of modern medicine diagnosing pretty much everything, it is because we are learning more and becoming a more educated society on mental disabilities as a whole.

I think there are three main factors in the increase in autism diagnoses. The first is that more and more conditions fall under the umbrella of autism. There are many different kinds, and they all rightfully belong there. However, this means more are being diagnosed. Secondly, I think that more are being diagnosed because we are finally understanding the condition more, and are thus more able to diagnose it. If we didn't see it nearly as much in the past, it could be because we didn't know how to look for it. And lastly, I think that there is some sort of environmental factor playing in on the rise in autism cases. We don't know what it is, I don't think it is vaccines, but I definitely think that it is something in our diet or in our food preparation that is causing it.

It definitely seems real, and I wouldn't be so quick to blame it on the parents.

If those are the actual state numbers, then the national avg is way higher than 1/110...
