Whaddya make of all this James Harrison stuff?

Well, the grand total is now $125,000 in fines for Mr. James Harrison this year for several hits the league deemed dirty and/or illegal.  What do you think, NS?

I will make no secret of the fact that I am, indeed, a Steeler fan.  Personally, I think he is being targeted by the NFL.  It's damn near impossible to stop some of the hits he has made.  The one on Fitzpatrick this week was especially awful.  That is exactly how you are taught to tackle from Pop Warner and on.  Facemask to the chest, wrap up, move your feet.  Quite honestly, it is turning into a completely different sport.  The other hits were not anything out of the ordinary for any play until this year. 

Having said that, I think you can penalize him for the hit on Massaqoui. Hard hit, helmet lowered, and arms extended showing intent to hurt.  Also, James has not been helping himself with quotes like "I don't try to injure people, but I try to hurt them" and always talking about how he does not care about the rules and will continue to keep playing like he knows how.  Certainly, James has always been a bit of a hardass in the way he goes about things, but part of me must say that that used to be a gold standard and an admirable trait in previous years.

Anyway, I'd be glad to argue this or just see what everyone else's opinion on this is.  Also....videos for reference...youtube his name and either Drew Brees, Massaquoi, Cribbs, or Fitzpatrick. Discuss.

his hit on massaquoi was illegal for sure, and the hit on brees

other than that, cmon, let the man play

the fitzpatrick one was straight fucking bullshit - just give him roughing the passer, no need to fine for a hit that he couldnt have stopped

He brought it on himself with all the comments he's made, plus being a repeat offender. Anything questionable will go against him.

However, facemask to the chest isn't how you're supposed to tackle. Lead with the shoulder, with the head on their strong side. Head to the chest is called spearing, which is technically illegal, but rarely called. He did get right up under his chin on that tackle, and looked iffy whether he made contact with the chin. Both the hits on Cribbs and Massaquai were illegal as he dropped his head and lead with the crown. James Harrison is a dirty player, plain and simple. Now he's getting called out on it and targeted, which is a good thing. I also have some suspicions that he's on roids. No way you go from getting cut from a few teams to being defensive player of the year with a head twice the size. I think he's got a bad case of roid rage.

ok of course it wasn't a PERFECT tackle in the finest sense of the term but any hit like that is not only never flagged but encouraged at all levels of play.  solid, hard, football hit.

cribbs was not defenseless, he was a runner and in a position to make a play and avoid tacklers.  james came in low to make a hit and cribbs lowered his head into the path.  no way harrison is able to avoid that contact any more than cribbs.

agreed he is not helping himself with the comments, but i can't help but love it.  to quote a radio sports personality from pittsburgh

"Fifteen yards once in a while won't hurt the Steelers. $25K once in a while won't bankrupt Harrison. The thought of Harrison going against the NFL's new-found grain of hypocritical pacifism makes him that much more scary. Scary is a weapon."

and steriods is a whole 'nother story.  no defending that, i happen to know players at all advanced levels of football take them pretty frequently.  i've seen them myself in a high school locker room, which is scary.

Yea, the one on Cribbs is a gray area to me. Harrison obviously dropped the helmet and was leading with the crown of his head, regardless of what Cribbs was doing. It may not of been technically illegal, but it's still dirty. Like he said himself, he wants to hurt people out there.

You think the league is afraid of James Harrison? I think fitz would take that hit any day to get the first down. That was a big play in the game and you guys almost lost. 15 yards here and there WILL hurt you and it's gonna get worse unless he changes his hits. Just like the hit on Fitz, any questionable call will go against Harrison in a big way. I wouldn't be surprised to see him suspended on his next bad hit.

I'm surprised at your reaction the the steroids thing. I was expecting you to jump down my throat, I'm glad you didn't. Yea, it's a huge problem in the NFL and is being swept under the rug. NFL claims to care about player safety about these helmet hits, but seem to actively hide the steroids problem. Oh well. As Daniel Tosh says "I deserve the best athletes science can create. Athletes should be forced to take steroids!"

I hate the steelers, but some of the fines this guy's getting are bullshit. However, he needs to take the fine and not say anything controversial. I think if the league is targeting him, it's because he complains every time, for example he claimed to consider retiring, and it becomes big news that the NFL fined him. It lets them set an example on a larger scale than usual.

I do think guys are afraid of him, even if they don't admit it.  Alot more difficult to catch a pass over the middle or step into a throw when you know you're going to get drilled by one of, if not the most, dirtiest/hardest hitting (whatever your opinion may be) players in the league who doesn't give a fuck if he's fined.

And yeah, no quicker way to destroy my credibility than to claim that steroids aren't as prevalent as ice-baths and gatorade in the NFL. It's a fucking joke.

my only reason for hating the steelers is because of that scumbag ben rapelesberger i wanted him to die a slow and painful death and i wish seymour crushed his fucking skull in last weekend instead of just smacking him

that being said even as a diehard patriots fan i like many steelers like tomlin, polamalu, ward, harrison and a few others cause theyre great players..what the NFL is doing to harrison is complete bullshit

that hit on fitzpatrick was completely legal and i think it is absurd for hte NFL to fine a player for playing hard..are they really expecting someone at full speed to stop and not hit the qb??

kudos for harrison for saying he's not going to change the way he plays just because he's being fined thousands of dollars..they'll probably have the fines built into his contract the next time negotiations come around anyways

I am a loyal Steelers fan.

Yes, James Harrison has had some dirty hits and plays in the past.

This year is just ridiculous though. Harrison is getting charged with minor hits on quarterbacks when he is not even driving them to the ground.

He is aware of the rule changes and has stopped driving quarterbacks into the ground, and is still getting calls. It is absurd

It is fucking stupid, I am not a Steelers fan at all and I think its stupid.


These guys are professional football players. The guy gets paid to hit/tackle people...you wear pads to help prevent injury, they know full well that injuries and even death can happen. A guy like Goodell has never stepped on a professional field, how come he is in position to make these judgment calls?

Let them play.

They're not terrible. They used to be. Now they're mediocre. They have some serious potential to be a very good team next year. In Holmgren I trust.
