Moving out after High School

So i am planning on moving out after i graduate high school and ski for a couple of year’s before going to college. I have narrowed my choice of state down to Utah or Colorado. I know they both have great skiing i just can’t choose where i should move to. Any help would help.

You're an idiot. Why not go to college in one of those states, both have great school and epic skiing?

Personally, I was in the same boat and I'm glad someone smartened my ass up and convinced me school was a way better idea.

Chances are if you don't go now, you won't go later.

College is fucking fun, and the best 4 years of your life and as long as you're not a retard, you'll be able to shred non stop while you're there.

I would do that execpt for the fact that i cant afford college out of state and that sadly my grades are not up to par. So i cant really go to college in any state by Wyoming and i hate Wyoming

You should look for a college near you with some good skiing, it might not be as good as what you want but take trips during college and what not, college is fun and as much as we all want to be ski bums college can set you up for the rest of your life. There's no reason you can't move after college.

yea dude, as a new york college student i can tell you your really fucking lucky to live in wyoming. go to college. i'm planning on living on the east coast for the next 4 years then moving to co. but thats a really loose plan.

personally i say good for you for not going right into college. most kids out of high school just arnt ready for the deadlines and pressures of college compared to high school. taking a year or two off to ski or work, then hitting college is a good plan. personally if i was in your situation i would go live in salt lake city. bunch of close DOPE mountains, and you'll get a ton of skiing in. cheaper than Colorado in general too.

just live your life how you want to bro, college isnt the only option - and contrary to most people's beliefs it isnt the best option for everyone. Plenty of the worlds richest people were college dropouts, or just straight up didn't go. they found other ways to better themselves in their field and went for it. so unless your hellbent on becoming a doctor or lawyer... you dont necessarily NEED college... but it is a good idea in most cases.

I don't think you're an absolute idiot for not wanting to go straight to college. A lot of times, if you already know you don't want to be in college, you won't do well at all. The only thing I will say is that unless your parents will be willing to support you in at least some ways, its not going to be easy at all to just 'move out.' You need to seriously consider how you'll be paying for skis, passes, rent, car, cell phone, food. Chances are, you'll have to end up working your ass off at a shitty job. Of course, thats not the end of the world and you can surely be happy living that lifestyle, but it is important to know that financial struggles will be major.

But to answer your question, I'd do Utah. Salt lake will have much more jobs than summit county.

I an going to college but like a couple guys said i am not ready for it yet i dont enjoy school and i want a break from it for a couple of years so when i do go back i do burn out after the first year. my brother burned out after 2 years and never wants to go back now. i dont want that i want to complete college just not right after 12 straight years of schooling already.

college isnt that bad. i'm gettin it done wit AND skiing 60 days a year. sounds good to me. I dont wanna do it later because then I'll feel lame going to school wit widdle pussy 18 year olds. How yah gonna feel when yer 21-22 and the only ppl around u are freshies. All yer friends will be on with their lives.

I was thinking the same thing when I graduated high school, except for the fact of not going to school.  If I were you I'd try and move out to a place like Salt Lake City or Summit County and try and work there and go to school.  You could take it easy, go to Salt Lake Community College of Colorado Mountain College, and take 12 credits there, that way you'd be a full time student and still be able to work and ski a ton, and your credits from those schools could transfer anywhere.  Really don't take a long break from school.  A couple of my friends did it and they struggled when they came back to school after being removed from it for a couple years.  Another thing you could do would be apply to schools in Wyoming but just defer for a year, so that way you could spend a year out of school and go ski, but still be enrolled at a school and go after that year of deferring.  Just my 2 cents, good luck on your decision.

If you want to ski and go to college definitely CMC or Sierra Nevada CC would be the best bet. That being said, I would definitely appreciate being in college now more if I had taken a year off to ski and work a low class job like doing dishes at a restaurant.

Im in the same boots as you, grades suck, not much money and just want to ski for the rest of my life and do nothing. I took a trip to utah last year and its heaven the mountains are amazing and the parks are dope. The style of living out there is real expensive though. Since you live in wyoming near jh why not stay there and go to college and ski at jh, then moving on to where you want to live after you think about it and experiencing more who knows maybe youll want to get out of the country (which is what i wanna do)

Sorry for the double post but i didnt read the thread first, my bad. And I know how you feel, my grades sucked through highschool (Mainly Cs) and i dont have money for school. But i was able to work out a payment deal with a flight instructor which opened a  big door for employment. I plan on moving out west to ski, getting my Commercial Pilots License and  looking into school. By then I think I would have some what of a grip on how things work in the real world and what i would like to become. Its not that i couldnt get the grades in highschool but i never applied myself, you have to find something you like enough to want to learn about.

friends who worked, learned trades, started at the bottom of a company, make money, pay their own bills, travel......LIVE IN SUMMIT COUNTY, COLORADO.

Don't waste your money jumping straight into school then graduating with a degree that you don't even want to use. Take a year off, take two, take as many as you want, just decide what you want to do before embarking on 4 years of getting there. I graduated this past year and I'm taking a year off right not to ski all winter, then in the spring I'm going to go travelling. Please, if you want to enjoy yourself to the maximum, do exactly what you want to do. Don't listen to these jerks who are calling you an idiot, remember that chances are they have parents that forced them to do school right away, so really, you're one step ahead of them by being able to make your OWN decisions concerning your own life.

If your grades aren't tip top, money is tight, and you're worried about being ready for college I would say community college is the ideal solution. You could move to salt lake, which has pretty reasonable cost of living and epic skiing, go to salt lake community college which is cheap (easy to get in state after a year), and after your two years there as long as you do ok you can transfer to the U of U right up the street and finish off a full degree.

A year or two of smoking weed and working a Dicks isn't going to make you any more prepared for college you just need to do it.

Thanks for all the help. Salt lake and CC sounds like a good idea. Someone said to stay in wyoming and go to college and ski in JH. the only problem with that is i ilve 7-8 hours away sometimes even more in the winter.

There is nothing wrong with taking a gap year, in fact I would say if its a really, really good idea for a lot of people. I think too many kids go strait to college and they don't even know why they are there other than because people tell them they should be. I say do it, take a year or two off and figure shit out. Just make sure you don't waste it. Get a job, do some real work, ski, figure out where your priorities are and once you figure it all out, then go to college.

As for your original question, I would definitely go to Utah if it was me. I have never been to CO, but I have been to UT and it seems like you would get the best of everything there.

GAP YEAR - do it. I'm coming to the end of mine. Pretty much all my friends went straight to Uni. They've all had fun, but many wish they had done what I did and taken a year out before uni (Im probably going next year).

Taking a year or two out truly frees you up mentally, allows you real freedom to do what you want in a way that being locked into a course simply can't compete with. Diving into 'College' without having a break and not really wanting to be there (like yourself) wont be as fun.

if you want to just ski, then just ski. don't waste money on college if you're gonna cut classes and ski all the time. it's not as hard as people make it out to be but it still requires a lot of effort. if you're skiing 4-5 times a week, you're grades are gonna blow.

bottomline, college costs a lot of money. unless your parents are paying tuition, a lot of that comes from loans which need to be PAID BACK...concept people don't get. if you want to go...you can still have a bunch of fun and ski a lot...just don't go to school just to ski, dumb idea.

my vote is to go to college right away, but do what you want to do.

keep in mind you'll be able to ski for most of your life, maybe another 50 years if you take care of your body. sacrificing a lot of skiing for a couple years during college is not a big deal.

If it looks like it can work out I'll be moving out to probably UT  for both the skiing AND college. and if your grades arnt up to par for a four year university then hit up a community college that way you can get your associates in something.

Taking a year off is fine as long as you're serious enough about schooling that you will make sure to come back. Aside from that, the CC idea is the best you have going, aside from getting into a university right off the bat.

if you know you aren't ready to jump back into a school setting, don't do it. I more or less went to college directly after HS because it was the next step and all my friends were doing it. I completed two years in a degree I had no interest in and then basically went crazy. If you are not ready, you are not ready. It will be fun, but for the money you are paying it is not worth going just because. Have a solid interest, something that will motivate you to take interest in what it is you are studying. If it takes you 2 years to find something, so be it. If it takes you 5 years, so be it. Don't ever let anyone tell you you are making a mistake. If it seems like the right thing to do for you at the time, do it. This is your life, no one else's.

Move where you want and go to a community college for 1-2 years, then transfer to a college or university. That's what I am doing. Moved to Colorado, going to community college. CC is super easy so you won't really have to worry about school too much, and you can shred a lot. Plenty of community colleges in the mountains.

I'm taking a year off, working 15 hours a week and skiing my ass off.
Parents are cool with it, so it's all good.
50% of people who go to a university don't graduate from the university that they started at.
They either drop out, or transfer.
I'm guessing most of those people went straight out of highschool and jumped on the bandwagon that the media shoves down your throat.

Heres my advice

First off, when your choosing a school, please dont put skiing location as a top category.  Thats so short sighted.  You should obviously pick a school that you can realistically get into with a good reputation and program for what you're trying to get into.

Skiing location should always be second to that, so try your best to get a good combination of both.  I almost chose a lower tier university just for skiing location but i decided to make the better decision to pick the better school that still has skiing, just not as good as the other school.  Im sure i will thank myself in the future.

Second.  Obviously everyone is different but it is usually really hard for someone to go back to school after taking off a few years.  If you take a year off to work and ski, you're going to be use to having no school work, pressure and having a ton of freedom.  If you go right out of high school, you should still have a pressure/work mentality, seeing as grade 12 is the make or break year of high school usually.

Seriously think this through and dont look just at the next few years but look at the next 10.

hahahaha what? my senior year, along with everyone else's, was a fucking joke. junior year is what matters. highschool in general is a joke, college is a business just like everything else. its really not that hard to get into places...people hype that shit up when in reality its all bullshit. they just want your money.

AFTER getting accepted to university, yes it is a joke.  Junior year in canada didnt really count for anything except getting early acceptances.

This is true, but it is not a good idea.  The people one might mention, Mark Zuckerburg, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, Steve Jobs, all dropped out because they had great ideas that REQUIRED them too.  They also went to great schools, Harvard for Zuck and Gates, Brown for Turner, and Reed College(which for those of you who don't know IS an ivy level school) for Jobs.  They did not drop out because they did not want to be in school, they dropped out because they started something incredible that they had to pursue.  The vast majority of people who drop out of college to start a business, see that business fail.  It is almost NEVER a good idea.  Like I said, the folks you mention are extreme outliers. 

If you want to start a business, it is a much better idea to finish college first, then start what you want.

For the OP, lots of folks are suggesting you go to school, then move for a couple of years after you graduate.  I think this is a MUCH better plan.  The other good suggestion, is to go to school in Colorado, Utah, or Washington, Montana, somewhere with great mountains, where you can get 60-80 days a year while getting a degree. 

You could also go to school in California.  I have posted on this before, but I went to a University of California school, and skied Mammoth 30 days a year through the ski team.  Most of the big California schools(UC schools, USC, Stanford...) have ski teams, so this would allow you to ski Mammoth or Tahoe 30+ days, while having a full life.  You could take a couple of winters off, and graduate in say 5 years with two seasons under your belt.  After that, you could live in the mountains for another couple of years, then decide if you want to join the real world, or stay in the mountains.

You don't need to go to school in California, you could go somewhere else and take a couple of winters off.  I just suggest California because you can ski a lot at great mountains WHILE being in school.  Obviously Utah, Washington and Colorado are even better, the 30 day Tahoe season would  be a 60+ day season in an;y of those spots.

I guess the bottom line is that you can have both.  You can ski a lot while going to school.  I would go immediately, or take 1 year off.  If you take two or more you might not come back.  One year would be fine, I know plenty of people who did that. 

Just make sure you go to college.  And make sure you get a degree.  You really want a degree to fall back on.  There are lots of jobs, and not just of the Dr./Lawyer variety, where you NEED a bachelors.  If you don't have it, they won't even interview you.

Sometimes you gotta pursue what you feel is right though, if your just going to college to buy yourself 4 more years to try to figure out what you want to do with your life - and your not even majoring in something you love and want for the rest of your life, why the fuck waste the money and time? the people who fail and give up after just 1 failed attempt are pussies...

You know who this mans name was? Abraham Lincoln. Now this story is about 150 years old, and the world has changed immensely since then. But it still has a solid meaning, never ever give up. You know why failure is seen as such a bad thing? because most people give up after just 1 or 2 times they dont succeed, and thats bullshit! what if Lincoln would have given up after that senatorial race when he was 49 and said "fuck it, politics isnt for me" ? well the map of the united states might look a whole hell of a lot different today, and we might not have a black president in office. just because one man who failed his whole life finally succumbed to this so called "failure" and gave up.

NOW GO OUT THERE AND DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE!!!!! hahahah that was one hell of a pep talk.... but im still not saying you shouldnt go to college, im just saying dont go if you dont think it will benefit you! do what you love and money will follow.

look homie, if you cant afford to go to a uni out of state, go to community college in CO or UT. that way you can ski a LOT more, and get your prereq classes out of the way for cheap(er). Then, by the time you finish that in like two years, you can transfer to a university with residency. Also a shitload cheaper.
