Anyone else listen to records besides me? I've always had a turntable and a couple records to throw on now and again, but recently i've been buying a shit ton due to a new coworker also working at a used record store here in town.

my current favorite purchase:

Nothing is better than listening to an entire record straight through without skipping a song. And i don't care what you say, vinyl does sound better than anything else.

And even if the sound scratches sometimes, it gives it that original feel. Instead of everything being "perfect" and requiring no effort to listen to. Vinyl is the absolute best.

My GFs dad has 1000s of vinyls, along with what seems like about 50 players. He bumps his tunes loud enough that they can be heard 4 houses down. He says fuck the neighbors.

Ha ha they are definitely top 5 of mine too ha ha especially after seeing them so so amazing.  I got my all of my Explosions from a record store in Seattle but on their website they have all of a sudden i miss everyone for 12$. http://explosionsinthesky.shop.musictoday.com/Dept.aspx?cp=10280_10302 The rest can be found on amazon for decent prices.

that is true about vinyl. and what your talking about is lossless files such as FLAC. those have full quality. FLACS are saved on Cs so thats why they sound so good. itunes can only run ALAC files which is apple lossless which is absically the same thing

My mom and uncle had about 100 records at my grandmas house that they said i could have. Its all mostly classic rock and country. I know for sure theres a bunch on Conway Twitty, Def Leppard, and Meatloaf, but i need to go check and see.

made a two of the best purchases of my life yesterday at the Goodwill in Sandy, OR.
bought a Grand Funk Railroad 45 of American Band and Creepin' pressed on some see-through gold vinyl. there is no way it's not with some decent money.
also got a Zeppelin 45 there from 1969, making it really early in their career, so i'm hoping that's worth something as well.


p.s.-seth you can't say things like that and not come through. so when you get back for Christmas we're listening to I, II, III, and IV back to back.

I have about 600 records. Mostly electronic music but have a ton of rare jazz gems that you can't find on mp3 or CD. Could easily spend hours in a record store listening to tunes. It's a dying media format but I'll definitely gobble up what I can now before it's gone.

not knowing what you're talking about warning

obviously a 50 year old album that's been played thousands of times isn't going to sound mint (although it'll still sound better than any mp3), but try keeping a cd that long and playing it that many times and tell me it still works.

vinyl is that it's analogue, meaning that thing people call bitrate is infinite. There's not nearly as many audible wavelengths cut out when sticking to analogue meaning it will always sound better.  When recording in a studio in digital to put onto a record like they do lots of these days they do keep it uncompressed, but they also won't use any shitty computer sound card if they know what they're doing.

if you rip a cd to your computer it's not going to sound dope because it's not studio quality, your integrated computer sound card is going to sound almost as shitty as hooking up an ipod to a stereo. you'd have to have to invest a large amount of money in good soundcards and software etc to get your sound quality anywhere near as good as vinyl

and yea, my collection has just been getting started (maybe 100 or so), but my dad and brother have a good 3000-4000. a good turntable is also clutch, luckily my brother has a business fixing em so that wasn't too hard to come by

I love my vinyl...

but for the record, the human ear is physically incapable of distinguishing the difference between a 320kbps MP3, WAV, AIFF, or analogue signal. Yes, compressed music DOES sound different, but only below 320kbps MP3 and WAV & AIFF are uncompressed, resulting in an immeasurable difference between them and analogue.

People can claim all they'd like that vinyl "sounds better", but it's purely psychological- there's no difference between vinyl and uncompressed digital.

you need to learn something about sample rates.
bit rates aren't everything, sample rates are just as important. 320kbps is great, and on mediocre speakers a difference can't be heard if there is a good sample rate. but get yourself a pair of really great speakers, plug in your mp3 player and play something, then a cd, then vinyl. The mp3 will sound shit compared to the other 2.

both are indistinguishable from vinyl if played through an 800 dollar soundcard with good software.. through an mp3 player or any integrated soundcard it will always sound worse.

And how many people do you know with $2000+ speakers? I'm going to school for audio production- I'm very familiar with sample rates and bit rates. I maintain that until you're working with world-class equipment, the difference between the file types I listed and analogue is indistinguishable for the human ear.

unless you invest in good equipment you WILL hear the difference with any decent 70's speakers. the technology seemed to peak then and in my opinion hasn't been the same since. Now you need to spend a fortune to get anything decent.

but like I said, that 320kpbs mp3 file at 44.1kHz may sound indistinguishable on any adequate speakers, but ONLY if you spend the money on a good sound card or something to play it because integrated or mp3 players it will not sound good.

such a fickle world we live in, you need to spend money so they sound the same but you also need to spend money so they sound different.

Off the top of the head I have a pressing of Frankenchrist printed on Alternative Tentacles (who aren't allowed to produce it anymore). I have a white copy of the Operation Ivy Ramones album (100 white ones made, along with 100 red and 100 blue). Early pressings of London Calling and every Madness album, a German pressing of ...And Now Back to out Programming by Aus Rotten, some Bob Marley, Stray Cats, all the vinyl only Against Me! alternate version singles, the Leftover Crack/Citizen Fish split, a horde of assorted Jungle/DnB albums and singles, Today's Empires, Tomorrows Ashes (came with huge political pamphlet), some of those cheesy Hot Topic picture vinyls, the Reagan Youth album (has a spot marked on the jacket for rolling joints lol), a bunch of other assorted punk, ska, hiphop, and a giant box full of 80's shit like David Bowie that I don't listen too.

I need a new needle right now actually but I have to get them off ebay and shit because the player is early 80's.

sl 1600s are slightly cheaper

honestly expect to pay upwards of 150 for something good

i got my sl-1600 for like 80 bucks, but that was a lucky find.

all the stores in spokane at least have 3-4 turntable and some recievers and stuff for sale
