you do realize that less than 100 years ago, one of the reasons the US mainland wasn't invaded by the japanese was because the japanese leaders feared that they would face an armed country with guns in every home?

Woozy, you really think 15 year old shit heads like this kid should be allowed to carry a gun? Fuck that, there isn't a chance in hell I would go to any school if guns were allowed. There's so many emotionally unstable kids in college and especially middle school/high school. At best I can see giving teachers guns, but you know that would turn into a huge shitstorm the first time a teacher pointed a gun at a harmless kid.

Depends on how you see it/where you're from.  If in the place that you're from a bunch of kids carry guns I would imagine you too would wish it was legal to carry one.

This has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. It has something to do with poor gun regulation. The two are very different issues. I believe in the 2nd Amendment, we should have the right to bear arms.

I never said I don't think teachers shouldnt have guns, but it will never happen, nor do I really want it to.

So you think 18 year olds should be allowed to carry. So what you are saying is that only some kids in high school can carry, and the others can not? What gives one kid the right to defend himself and the other not, if they are at the same intellectual level?

People think that guns, as dangerous as they can be, are inherently more dangerous than they are, I would like to site the Availability Heuristic in proving this. The Availability Heuristic states:

"The Availability heuristic is gauging what is more likely based on vivid memories. The problem is individuals tend to remember unusual events more than everyday, commonplace events. For example, airplane crashes receive lots of national media coverage. Fatal car crashes do not. However, more people are afraid of flying than driving a car, even though statistically airplane travel is safer. Media coverage feeds into this bias; because rare or unusual events such as medical errors, animal attacks and natural disasters are highly publicized, people perceive these events as having a higher probability of happening."

I think that because the media rarely does big press stories like this (not to say that this school hijacking is not news worthy) on how Mr. Jones used his gun to stop bandits from robbing his house or Ms. Smith used a gun to stop the man that was trying to rape her. I feel that we, as Americans, have the right to bear arms. As a great man once said “If the Government doesn't trust us with our guns, why should we trust them with theirs?” Guns offer us the abillty to protect ourself in situations when our government is not there to.

Is the gun regulation lacking perfect? Not by a long shot, should that kid have gotten his hands on a gun? No, but that is not the fault of the 2nd Amendment, I am sure if he really wanted to get a gun and do what he is doing to his school he would find a way to. The 2nd Amendment is trust that our government is offering to us, and we must respect that trust by using our guns proporly and getting our elected statesmen to lobby for better gun regulation, witch is the real issue at hand.

there is no 2nd amendment right for minors to purchase guns, and as far as i know it's illegal for anyone under 18 to wield a firearm in any situation without adult supervision, so even with the 2nd amendment everything about this is still illegal. and last time i checked, the 2nd amendment was meant for law abiding citizens, and using a gun in commission of a felony voids your 2nd amendment rights forever, so when this is all said and done this kid will not be allowed to purchase a gun for the rest of his life.

so please, dont shit on the 2nd amendment, it's one of my favorite amendments.

i posted without reading further, so my point above has already SORT'VE been made...

but woozy, i think you should stand down on the whole high school gun rights thing. ive been involved in some pretty heated debates at my law school over whether college kids should be allowed to carry at school, and ive got to say it's a pretty sticky topic.

as pro-gun as i am, i think you have to draw the line at high school kids being allowed to concealed carry. theyre just too volatile and prone to snap decision making. i BARELY think it should be allowed on college campuses, and even then there should be pretty tight rules about it. high school TEACHERS should be allowed under certain circumstances, but definitely not students.

i really dont think this conversation should continue, it's just irrational...and again, I AM A HUUUUUGE pro-gun person, and they DO NOT belong in the hands of high school kids AT SCHOOL under any circumstances

So by your logic every country should have a nuclear weapon? It's the same deterrent policy that you are trying to pitch.

You also need to consider the following scenario: Mugger mugs someone and the person being mugged has a gun. He pulls out the gun and gets shot, in the gunfight another person is shot. Although rare, there are hundreds of these scenarios that easily escalate because of the presence of two guns instead of one.

The kids who shoot up schools and why we have such a phenomena of troubled kids reaching out is because there is such a blatant outlet for their rage that everyone can hear. The media makes these people national headlines. Would the Columbine killers have done it if they knew they would get no fame out of it? That is ultimately what every psychologist has determined their behaviors ultimate goal was. Otherwise they probably would have committed suicide and only punished themselves.

I am not for the removal of all weaponry or guns. I think it is too ideologically entrenched in our heritage to completely do without. However, to say that if everyone had a gun the world would be a safer place is just asinine. You can pull far-fetched examples and flaw ridden historical examples all day, but the mere suggestion of it with our current socio-structure is just absurd. One word: context.

I am from montana so of course I own guns/hunt, etc. But allowing High school kids to carry guns at school is foolish. You couldn't have a safe/comfortable learning environment with guns in the building. Also in my psychology class we discussed how throughout the teenage years the brain is still developing including the part of the brain that deals with weighing consequences and thinking of long term effects. It is proven that it is harder for teenagers to make good decisions due to the fact that their brains are simply not finished. Not saying it explains every dumb decision but it would definitely not be a good idea to give them guns at school.

You can argue all you want but its your twisted gun laws and surrounding culture that are at the root of this problem. Arguing against that point is a good example of an ignorant, non factually based statement that seems to echo throughout American politics. There is a reason why the United States has the highest murder rate per capita out of the entire first world.

Uhh, don't miss, and use LP rounds. I would not have a problem shooting a gunman in a highschool. That said I can control my emotions, and am willing to pull the trigger. There are way to many people who are not willing to shoot, especially to kill. High schoolers have to many emotions running around to be safely armed. Teachers on the other hand should have the option of having a weapon at school.

Yeah this was all over our local news here in Wisconsin.. What's weird is that the kid never threatened any of the kids inside, never said why he was doing it, and carried on conversations and laughed with the other students during the whole ordeal.  It's sad that this happened but thankfully everyone was okay, and to bad no one was able to help this kid before it got to this point.

Most world leaders that had the same manufacturing capacity as the US did, in the buildup to WWII, would make sure that they were an armed country with guns in every home. Mr Isoroku Yamamoto didn't think, "Fuck, they have a right to keep and bear arms, I'm not going anywhere near that fucking hellhole." The only thing it's protecting you from is your own people, and there are far better ways to deal with the deep rooted problems of society than give everybody a gun.
